Arsenal Football Club began life when a group of workers at the Woolwich Arsenal Armament Factory decided to form a football team in late 1886. The Club played under the name of Dial Square. In 1891 the Club turned professional and changed its name to Woolwich Arsenal, finally joining the Football League in 1893. The Gunners moved to Highbury in 1913, as a Second Division side. Following the First World War Arsenal were voted into the newly expanded First Division, where they have remained ever since.

In 1874 Jack Hughes, Frederick Matthews, Walter Price and William Scattergood met under a gas-light in Heathfield Road to form a new club. On April 2 1887 Villa win the FA Cup for the first time with a 2-0 victory against West Brom at The Oval. Aston Villa had become one of the premier teams in the land in just 13 years.

The Blackburn Rovers club was formed in 1875 following a meeting on November 5th in the St. Leger Hotel on King William Street. The meeting was organised by two old boys of Shrewsbury school, John Lewis and Arthur Constantine. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the possibility of forming a football club to play under Association rules. Seventeen people attended the meeting, the majority of whom were Blackburn Grammar School old boys.

The club was formed in 1874 by the Vicar of Christ Church Sunday School, Bolton, when he created an outdoor recreational club. In 1877 the footballers amongst the club re-christened themselves Bolton Wanderers. The club was one of twelve founder members of the Football League in 1888. BWFC won the FA Cup in 1923 (the first final played at Wembley).

St Domingo's FC quickly established a local reputation for themselves and players were recruited from outside of the parish, precipitating a change of name in November 1879 - to EVERTON. The hugely significant meeting that decided the new title took place at the Queens Head Hotel in Village Street, off Everton Road, a short distance from the lock-up tower that figures on the Everton crest to this day.

Fulham is the oldest of Londonís first class clubs and its long history began back in 1879 with some Sunday-school boys knocking a ball around on a long-forgotten park pitch. All a far cry from the multi-million pound internationals who make up the Premiership team of today.

Hull City was founded in 1904, playing friendly games at The Boulevard (the home of the Hull Rugby League Club), Anlaby Road Cricket Ground and Dairycoates. A year later they were elected to the Second Division of the Football League. They call themselves the Tigers - a nickname adopted from their amber and black striped shirts. Hull City, along with Grimsby Town were the only two professional teams which had official permission to play league football on Christmas Day because of the demands of the fish trade.

If it wasn't for one man, Liverpool Football Club would never have been born. When Everton left Anfield in a dispute over rent in 1892, club chairman John Houlding stayed behind along with a handful of supporters and just three first-team players. But he was determined to see football continue at the ground. He formed a new club from scratch, chose the name LiverpoolÖ and created a legend.

Originally formed in 1880 as St. Marks (West Gorton), they then became Ardwick A.F.C. in 1887 before changing their name to Manchester City F.C. in 1894. The club has won the League Championship twice, the FA Cup four times, the League Cup twice and the European Cup Winners Cup once.
