Tottenham are actively working to offload players not in the club’s plans, with Djed Spence among those expected to depart.

However, Spence’s anticipated move to Genoa has fallen through, and he is now back in training with the Spurs’ first team.

According to journalist Nizaar Kinsella, a deal between Genoa and Tottenham for Spence is now highly unlikely. The Italian club found the £8.5 million asking price for the defender too high.

Spence, who still has three years remaining on his contract with Spurs, was signed from Middlesbrough in the summer of 2022 for £12.5 million.

Last season, he spent the latter half on loan at Genoa, where he made 16 Serie A appearances, starting in half of those games and coming on as a substitute.

His versatility across various defensive and midfield positions impressed the Italian club, but the financial terms proved to be a stumbling block.

Tottenham had hoped to recoup a significant portion of their initial investment through Spence’s sale. However, with the collapse of the Genoa deal, Spence has returned to pre-season training under manager Ange Postecoglou.

The right-back’s future now remains uncertain as Spurs must decide whether to seek another potential buyer or reintegrate him into the squad for the upcoming season.

Additionally, with the impending departure of Emerson Royal, the club will be in the market for a reliable backup.

It remains to be seen whether Spurs will consider keeping Spence as an option.
