Tottenham Hotspur are planning a significant rebuilding project
It is a fairly well-known fact that Tottenham Hotspur need several new additions to the squad if they want to be anywhere that they would like to. So far this season, their progress in the Carabao Cup and the Europa League have been their saving grace after an abysmal Premier League campaign, where Spurs have lost 10 games out of their first 20.
Ange Postecoglou has lost practically every single player to injury or suspension at some point in the campaign with unavailabilities of important personnel contributing a great deal to the team’s problems. A lack of squad depth has been dramatically exposed although fortunately, Tottenham have the ongoing transfer window to correct things before they go further downwards.
Alasdair Gold has provided an exciting insight into their transfer plans for the immediate future as he said the following on his Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham podcast.
“From what I understand, Spurs are looking at potentially a new left-back, a new centre-back and in an ideal world I wonder if they could find someone to cover both of those positions like Micky van de Ven does. Also they’re potentially looking at midfielders, whether that’s attacking or not, I’m not entirely certain that Bentancur or Bissouma are the ideal Postecoglou number six.”
A goalkeeper has already arrived at Tottenham with the club confirming Antonin Kinsky’s capture over the weekend in a transfer from Slavia Prague. The 21-year-old’s arrival will give Ange Postecoglou with the confidence to cope well in Guglielmo Vicario’s absence and even after he returns from injury given Fraser Forster, 36, is not the most reliable player in goal.
A left-back and a central defender have been on the agenda for several months, although the latter could be paused until the summer as Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are close to returning to action. Destiny Udogie’s injury has opened the door to Spurs requiring a left back sooner rather than later and while no concrete move seems to have been made just yet, it should not be ruled out that Sergio Reguilon re-enters the fray having been frozen out for a while.
It is debatable whether Spurs require a midfielder. They have five or six very good players in the engine room and as such, a revamping project in the middle of the park can easily wait until the summer. It is surprising, however, that an offensive man has not made the cut in Tottenham Hotspur’s list of priorities considering their frailties further up the pitch with form as well as fitness.
