Barnsley are set to complete the loan signing of midfielder Matthew Craig from Tottenham.

That's according to a report from Football Insider, who say a number of other clubs had also shown an interest in the 21-year-old.

Having come through the youth ranks with Spurs, Craig made what is to date his only first-team appearance for the club in a 4-1 win over Leeds United in the Premier League in May 2023.

He then spent the second-half of last season on loan with Doncaster Rovers, helping them reach the League Two play-offs, where they were beaten in the semi-finals by Crewe Alexandra.

But despite that, it now looks as though Craig himself is still about to be given the chance to show what he can do in League One this season.

Barnsley set for Tottenham transfer agreement

As per this latest update, Barnsley are now set to complete the loan signing of Craig for the coming campaign.

It is thought that a number of clubs had been keen to sign the midfielder this summer. However, the Tykes are said to have moved quickly to secure his services.

Craig has apparently agreed to a temporary move to Oakwell, and undergone a medical ahead of the deal being confirmed.

The midfielder still has two years remaining on his current contract with Tottenham, securing his future in North London until the end of the 2025/26 season.

Barnsley finished sixth in the regular League One season in 2023/24, but then missed out on promotion to the Championship after defeat to Bolton Wanderers in the play-off semi-finals.

They will of course, now be looking to improve on that this time around, having appointed Darrell Clarke as their new manager since the end of the season.

This summer, the Tykes have already made three new senior signings, with Jackson Smith and the returning duo of Conor Hourihane and Marc Roberts completing permanent moves to Oakwell.

Barnsley are scheduled to begin their 2024/25 campaign on Friday 9th August, when they host newly promoted Mansfield Town at Oakwell.

Matthew Craig could be a good addition for the Tykes

It does look as though Craig could be a useful new recruit for the senior squad at Oakwell in the coming campaign.

The departure of Herbie Kane and end of Conor Grant's loan means that the Tykes may well need some extra depth in the centre of the park for next season.

Completing the signing of the young Spurs man would give them that for the coming campaign, and it will be interesting to see how he does at Oakwell.

Craig's arrival at Doncaster back in January coincided with an excellent run of form for Grant McCann's side, that allow them to come from way down the table to claim a play-off spot.

With the 21-year-old now playing one division higher this season - should he complete this move - there will be plenty keen to see how he copes with that step up.

If he can make a similar impact again this time around, he could be a big asset for Clarke's side, and this experience will have aided his development as well.
