Tottenham Hotspur have been looking to bring in a new midfielder in the upcoming 2025 transfer intervals as Ange Postecoglou looks to add physical presence, power, and reliability in the middle of the park, and the North Londoners have been subject to links with Brighton defensive midfielder Carlos Baleba.
The Lilywhites have been short at the heart of the park given the departures of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Giovani Lo Celso in the recently concluded summer transfer window. Daniel Levy failed to bring in appropriate recruits to cover for the sold, and the fact that Lucas Bergvall and Archie Grey are still young means Tottenham’s chief will have to drop into the market again to bring in a midfielder.
Levy favors Cardoso amid Baleba links?
There have been reports off late (h/t Alex Crook of talkSPORT) suggesting Ange Postecoglou’s admiration of Brighton midfielder Baleba. However, despite the links to the 20-year-old Cameroon national team, John Wenham, owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose, doesn’t think Tottenham will move for Carlos Baleba.
The podcast host insists that Real Betis’ midfielder Johnny Cardoso would be Daniel Levy’s preferred midfield signing.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, Wenham said:
“I can’t really see that happening. I think it is far more likely that the club would opt to sign Cardoso from Real Betis instead, as the holding midfielder signing. With Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray both already at the club too, I just can’t see this one.”
Baleba has been impressive since his debut for the Seagulls, and multiple clubs, including Tottenham, have expressed interest in the midfielder. However, Brighton would not be under any pressure to sell the player, which makes a probable transfer tricky and hefty.
This could force Tottenham to pivot to Cardoso, a player they already hold an option on.
