Over the past few days, Tottenham Hotspur have been pushed forward as a contender to sign Getafe’s Omar Alderete in the winter market.

On Wednesday, we covered claims from South America that Spurs are negotiating a deal for the defender. There was also confidence he would end up at the north London club in the next window.

Two days later, AS reported Ange Postecoglou has asked Tottenham to sign the 27-year-old in January.

They also stated the La Liga side want to retain him and the only way Spurs can sign the centre-back is by activating his €16m release clause.

Marca have covered comments made by Getafe president Ángel Torres to the local media yesterday and he addressed rumours around the Tottenham target.

“The fans can rest assured that Alderete will be here until June. He is happy. We are not going to touch the goal, defence and midfield unless someone pays the clause,” he said.

This means the Premier League club will have to wait until next summer to sign the Paraguay international and the only way they can secure his services in January is by triggering his clause.

Alderete initially joined Getafe on loan from Hertha Berlin in 2022 and they made his stay permanent a year later. He’s been a regular for the Spanish club and his contract lasts until 2028.
