Atletico Madrid are monitoring developments with Spurs centre back Cristian Romero.

The Argentina international is understood to be interested in exploring a move away in the summer as he looks to play Champions League football.

The 26-year-old was critical of the club's hierarchy and recruitment policy in December, highlighting a lack of depth to their squad in comparison to the Premier League's elite, following a glut of injuries.

Having missed a number of games this season through injury and suspension himself, he has also praised his national side's medical staff in comments that have been construed as a subtle dig towards his rehab treatment at Spurs.

A World Cup winner with Argentina, Romero is playing under his fifth manager at Spurs, including interims, since signing for £43million from Atalanta in 2021.

Spurs are 14th in the Premier League and will play Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarter finals of the Europa League.

They face another summer of change with Ange Postecoglou's position expected to come under review and a number of players are assessing their next move.

Spurs, who tried to add Chelsea's Axel Disasi and Fikayo Tomori from Milan on deadline day, have been working on plans to strengthen further however with the likes of Lille midfielder Angel Gomes, who will be a free agent, and Southampton's Tyler Dibling among the names being considered.
