Djed Spence sent a clear warning to Jeremy Doku after Tottenham Hotspur were beaten 1-0 by Manchester City in the Premier League.
Spence was surprisingly benched by Ange Postecoglou for the defeat as Pedro Porro returned to the starting line-up.
Meanwhile, Doku started and caused the Spaniard several issues throughout the match and even set up Erling Haaland’s goal which won it for Manchester City.
Spence appeared to be frustrated at not having had the chance to face Doku but after the match, he made it very clear what would happen the next time Spurs play the champions.
Djed Spence fires warning to Jeremy Doku
Djed Spence warned Jeremy Doku on his Instagram that the pair will ‘meet again next time’ as the England defender was benched against Man City.
Spence and Doku are actually quite close having played together during the former’s loan spell in Ligue 1 with Stade Rennes in 2023.
The pair only played seven times together but it was mostly spent on the same flank in which they would have forged a strong relationship.
The 24-year-old looked to have been relishing the chance to face his former teammate, however, Postecoglou denied him that opportunity.
Doku won the Man of the Match award and in response to his Instagram post, Spence commented: “We’ll meet next time…”
Ange Postecoglou explains why he benched Djed Spence vs Manchester City
Postecoglou has revealed that he benched Spence because he has played an ‘enormous amount of time’ and felt that he needed a rest.
Tottenham also have options back available now and the manager was keen to use his squad having not had that luxury this season.
Speaking to the media after the match, Postecoglou said: “No, it wasn’t their turn, but like I said, it’s just, there’s no point having a squad and I can’t be sitting here bemoaning not having a squad and then not use it [when I do].
“Deki, Sonny and Djed have, you know, played an enormous amount of time, so having them have a little bit of a recovery and a breather, I thought was going to be helpful for us.”
