It turns out that one player could have been lining up for Eintracht Frankfurt rather than Tottenham Hotspur in the upcoming Europa League quarterfinal, with the German club’s head coach Dino Toppmoller revealing how close the forward came to joining his side.
Tottenham fans are still waiting to see the best of Tel, who has yet to catch fire in a white shirt since his loan switch from Bayern Munich in January.
Despite the forward’s less-than-ideal start to his time at the club, Ane Postecoglou is convinced that Tel will prove a success at Spurs.
Reports over recent weeks have claimed that Tottenham are very pleased with Tel’s attitude and see enormous potential in the teenager, and the Lilywhites will be hoping that he can showcase his quality in the upcoming Europa League tie.
Dino Toppmoller makes Tel transfer revelation
If Tel starts on Thursday, he will come up against a side that he knows very well from his time in the Bundesliga.
It turns out that Tel’s connections with Frankfurt go deeper, with Dino Toppmoller revealing that he is close with the 19-year-old and that he has been trying to bring him to Deutsche Bank Park for a long time.
Ahead of Eintracht Frankfurt’s upcoming showdown with Tottenham Hotspur, Toppmoller said (via Kerry Hau): “Mathys was a topic of discussion during several transfer windows because I know him and we have a connection.

“Unfortunately, it didn’t work out the way we hoped, but in the end, of course, he has to make the decision for himself. He is a great player, a good boy, a good person who will certainly have a great career.”
Will Tottenham activate the option to buy Mathys Tel this summer?
Tottenham have a £45m option to buy Tel permanently this summer but the 19-year-old is yet to really show signs that he is worth that kind of fee.
It has been reported that Bayern are desperate for Spurs to activate the option to buy Tel at the end of the season.
