Everton are looking to recruit new players to help their efforts in fighting relegation this season, but one move could end up lining Tottenham Hotspur’s pockets in the process.
The Toffees have enjoyed something of a revival under David Moyes, with back-to-back wins over Spurs and Brighton in the last week.
Everton still need reinforcements if they are to stave off relegation, though, and there have been a number of targets mooted for the Merseyside club this month already.
Moyes wants to sign two players before the transfer window shuts on February 3, with attacking talent apparently high up on the wishlist.
If Everton do push ahead with a move for one target, Marcus Edwards, though, they will end up handing millions of pounds to Spurs, who sit just one point and one league position above the Toffees now.
Everton’s move for Marcus Edwards would line Tottenham’s pocket thanks to sell-on clause
Everton are thought to be keen on Edwards, who has recently been left out Sporting Lisbon’s matchday squad amid speculation over his future.
The 26-year-old has been one of the most productive talents in Portugal over the last couple of years, but it seems he is now ready for a return to his native England, where he began his career with Spurs.
Sporting confirmed there is a €60m release clause in Edwards’ contract, though the winger is likely to cost far less than that now, with his contract set to expire in 18 months. We know Sporting are happy to let the player leave this month, too.

One thing to consider, though, is that Sporting may well look to offset a sell-on clause included in Edwards’ contract that sees Tottenham gain 35% of any transfer fee received for the player (as per Football.London).
It is now thought an offer of as little as £8.5m could get the deal done for Edwards, which would mean close to £3m heading straight to Tottenham’s pockets.
Marcus Edwards can take Everton to the next level and guarantee safety
He may not be in favour as much as he once was in Portugal, but Edwards is still a top quality player who can bring a new dimension to Everton’s game.
Edwards is a flair player who can make things happen out of nowhere, using his pace, skill, and creativity to produce moments of magic. A player like that could well be the difference between Everton staying in the Premier League or heading to the Championship.
