Glenn Hoddle believes that Daniel Levy deserves a lot of credit for the infrastructure and the revenue streams that he has built at Tottenham Hotspur but believes that the Spurs chairman has made one big blunder.

Spurs fans have been pretty vocal about their feelings about the way Levy has run the club. Many hold his decisions to be primarily responsible for the fact that the Lilywhites have won just one trophy in his more than two decades at the helm.

Thousands of Tottenham fans took to the streets to protest against the owners ahead of Tottenham’s clash against Man Utd two weeks ago, and chants continue to ring around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium calling for Levy to depart.

Daniel Levy should have invested in the squad first – Glenn Hoddle

Hoddle has insisted that while everything is in place for Tottenham to attract top players to the club and succeed, owing to the work Levy has done, he called for the Spurs hierarchy to be more transparent about where the money goes.

The Tottenham legend also suggested that Levy should have prioritised building a tittle-winning side first before he turned his attention to the stadium and training ground.

Glenn Hoddle told The Daily Mail: “Now I can understand that there are some people that are frustrated and they’re turning their anger on it. Daniel Levy’s done a fantastic job with the stadium. He’s built a fantastic training ground that any player in the world would love that environment to go and train and play in the stadium, right? That’s the wrong way around for me.

“The money that the stadium is bringing in is quite amazing. It really is. I think the fans need to know whether every penny is the priority. Is the priority the squad? Are we going to build a squad that that stadium actually deserves?

“Squad first, build a stadium afterwards, but it’s the other way around now. Now build a team where every single priority is for the squad. We’re going to [need to] go out and then we’re going to play perhaps 15 million, 20 million more than we should for that player because the future and the glory of Tottenham is going to come back.”

Hoddle claims Tottenham are ready for success

The 67-year-old pointed out that the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium would be a magnificent place at the moment if Spurs can get things right on the pitch and achieve some success.

However, Hoddle admitted that he understands the supporters’ impatience in seeing the club flex their financial muscle in the transfer market.

The pundit continued: “If you have had success there, the stadium would be a wonderful place for fans to go and watch. But if the results are not going well, you’re not as happy as you should be.

“If you’re winning and you’re building a team, and there’s a team that can genuinely go for trophies, then that stadium actually deserves to have a squad that can go all the way over the next four or five years.

“Everything’s there, ready, and Daniel’s built it. But for me, they’ve done it the wrong way around. But so be it. The moment is now, and I think that’s where the fans are disgruntled because they’re not sure whether now is the time that they can.”
