Tottenham Hotspur picked up a 3-0. win away from home against Manchester United in the Premier League and Dejan Kulusevski impressed with his performance for the North London club.
The 24-year-old Swedish international attracted a lot of praise for his performance against the Red Devils and former Premier League attacker Shaun Wright-Phillips has revealed that Kulusevski’s display against Manchester United reminded him of the Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp.
Kulusevski took up similar positions between the attack and midfield to open up the home defence. He managed to get on the score sheet as well.
The technically gifted attacker has been an important first player for Tottenham since joining the club from Juventus, and comparisons with Bergkamp will come as a huge compliment to him. The former Arsenal star is regarded as one of the finest players to have played in the Premier League.
“It almost, when I was watching the game, it reminded me a tad of some of the positions say Dennis Bergkamp would pick up,” said Wright-Phillips via TBR.
“Back in the day, it was 4-4-2, but Dennis used to always drop away from the frontman, into those spaces in between the midfield and the defence.
“I think he (Kulusevski) is strong enough and he has the quality enough. Once he turns and drives at people, and makes those final third runs, he will create chances. This finish here (second Spurs goal at Old Trafford) was a special finish, for a winger/midfielder that is a strikers finish.”
In terms of position, Kulusevski is a different player to that of the Arsenal attacker, but he has the skill set to operate in the number ten role like Bergkamp. Tottenham have enough depth in the wide areas and it will be interesting to see if they can mould him into a proper number ten in the coming seasons.
