Tottenham Hotspur have several key squad decisions to make ahead of the summer transfer window, with multiple players facing uncertain futures at the club.
One of the biggest question marks surrounds Timo Werner, whose loan spell from RB Leipzig is set to expire at the end of the season.
Despite having the option to sign him permanently, Spurs have reportedly opted against making the move long-term, signalling that the German forward will likely return to his parent club.
Bryan King: Timo Werner is not Tottenham material
Former Tottenham scout Bryan King has offered a blunt assessment of Werner’s time at the club, stating that Spurs are making the right choice in parting ways with the 28-year-old.
King believes that Werner has never truly fit into Ange Postecoglou’s system and lacks the quality needed to be a long-term asset for the team.
He added that while the forward will likely remain in the squad until his loan deal concludes, his departure will not be a significant loss for the club.
Speaking to Tottenham News, King said:
“I think he will be part of the squad until the end of the season.
“That is the agreement that Spurs have with Leipzig. However, I’m quite pleased that Spurs have made this decision, I would have made the decision in the winter transfer window.
“He certainly isn’t going to be a miss for me, he isn’t a Tottenham player, he never has been. He is not good enough for the club. Therefore, I would imagine he will remain as a squad player until the loan is finished.”
Werner has continued to struggle in the Premier League
Werner initially arrived at Spurs in January 2024 on loan and made an immediate impression by assisting Rodrigo Bentancur’s equalizer in a 2-2 draw against Manchester United.
However, despite a promising start, his overall contributions have been underwhelming. He has managed just one goal and three assists in 27 appearances across all competitions this season, with most of his game time coming from the bench.
This is not the first time he has failed to make a mark in the Premier League. He spent two years at Chelsea between 2020 and 2022, scoring just 10 goals in the league in 56 appearances.
Tottenham’s attacking depth has also strengthened significantly, with the arrival of Mathys Tel on loan from Bayern Munich earlier this year. The 19-year-old forward has already shown glimpses of his potential, making it increasingly unlikely that Spurs will retain Werner.
Additionally, the return of Wilson Odobert and Brennan Johnson from injury has further reduced Werner’s role in the squad.
With Spurs focusing on younger talents for the future, all signs point to Werner’s time in North London coming to an end this summer.
