De Ligt news will delight Man Utd fans
Sky Sports' Nick Wright at Wembley:
"Jonny Evans has served the club well since his return last year but his presence in the team today, at 36, combined with the injury to new signing Leny Yoro, underlines the need for reinforcements in central defence.
"Bayern Munich's Matthijs de Ligt fits the bill. The Netherlands international is well-known to Erik ten Hag, his former boss at Ajax, and, at 24, he should have his peak years ahead of him.
"The deal to bring him to the club comes too late for any kind of involvement today, of course, but it is a timely boost ahead of the Premier League campaign, especially with Noussair Mazraoui set to follow."
Man Utd agree deal to sign De Ligt
Manchester United have agreed a deal with Bayern Munich for the signing of defender Matthijs de Ligt in a deal worth €50m (€45m plus €5m in add ons).
Personal terms are not expected to be a problem.
The transfer is subject to De Ligt passing a medical.
He would need to be registered by midday on Thursday to be available for the opening match against Fulham on Friday.
In a separate deal, United have agreed many of the details of a deal for Bayern Munich’s right-back Noussair Mazraoui.
They are expected to proceed with that move once Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s transfer to West Ham United has been completed.

Antony has vowed to blitz the Premier League this season by scoring more goals and registering more assists.

“Always on paper, in my house. I usually take the notes with me but if I leave them at home, I'll always ask my wife to send me a photo of them.
“There are a lot of things I note down in detail: how many shots I should be making in a game, I can't lose the ball, I need to score goals and create assists, pass and dribble completions as well as defensive performance, more work on the right foot. I have a lot of objectives.
“Rest assured, you'll hear the name Antony in relation to goals and assists.”

However, there has been no official bid from Bayern (€25m + €5m) yet.

Latest from Sky Sports News' Dharmesh Sheth:
Bayern Munich are yet to budge on their €50m (£43m) asking price for Matthijs de Ligt.
United have explored separate and joint deals for Bayern Munich duo De Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui – but as yet, no agreement.
While there is stalemate, Bayern can’t proceed with their move for Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah.
A potential arrival would be less problematic if United could sell one of their centre-backs.
Meanwhile, there is cautious optimism a deal can be struck to sell right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka to West Ham United.
A lot of the details between the clubs have been agreed. Contractual details and terms of his departure with United are still to be finalised.
Inter Milan remain keen on the player and have explored a deal that would see Denzel Dumfries go to Old Trafford.
As it stands, United prefer a sale to West Ham in order to pursue a deal with Bayern for Mazraoui.
Man Utd midfielder update: Berge, Fofana, Ugarte
Latest from Sky Sports News' Dharmesh Sheth:
Manchester United have held initial discussions with Burnley over a deal for midfielder Sander Berge.
United are exploring the conditions of a potential transfer.
Sky Sports News understands Berge wants to make the move to Old Trafford. The midfielder has three years left on his contract.
Meanwhile, dialogue remains open with Monaco over the signing of midfielder Youssouf Fofana.
Sky Sports News understands a deal is there to be done for a player in the final year of his contract. Fofana was part of France’s Euro 2024 squad.
AC Milan’s interest in the midfielder has cooled after they were unable to agree a deal with Monaco.
Interest in Paris Saint Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte has cooled because of a significant gap in valuation.
Going back to the negotiating table has not been ruled out – but is likely to depend on PSG dropping their asking price.
Richard Rios of Palmeiras remains a player of interest – but his fee could prove prohibitive. Another option is Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat, who United had on loan last season.
While not essential, ideally United would want to create squad space and increase budgets ahead of bringing in a player.
As it stands, Fulham are not expected to go back in for Scott McTominay. Galatasaray are interested but have yet to get close to United’s valuation.
Interest from Saudi Arabia in Casemiro has cooled for now.

Ten Hag confident Van Nistelrooy can help Man Utd forwards
Erik ten Hag believes Ruud van Nistelrooy could be crucial in turning Manchester United's strikers into attacking stars.
United's front line will be under pressure at the start of the season with Rasmus Hojlund set to miss the opening part of the season with injury, leaving new signing Joshua Zirkzee as the likely No 9 to start the campaign.
Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford and Antony endured a difficult campaigns last time out while there are also the young shoulders of Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo, who could play big roles.
“He will have an impact on the strikers, but he will also work in other areas so it’s not only limited to the strikers,” Ten Hag said of Van Nistelrooy. “I think the strikers will definitely benefit from it, but he will work in togetherness with Rene Hake to drive the team.
“They are two very experienced coaches who were both managers. They know how to coach a team, how to drive a team forward and to challenge the team [so] that they are ready to win games and to win trophies. We are very pleased that we have them both on board.
“He will help all the players, but in particular, of course the strikers can take benefit from him because he was such a great striker.
“He scored so many goals, he had so much success, so definitely he will help the strikers in different areas and definitely on the mental side, bringing over his desire to win games and by scoring goals.”
Asked if Van Nistelrooy can help Rashford get back to his best, Ten Hag replied: “I have no doubt. I have strong belief in the person. I have strong belief in his skills to help our team score goals but also to help our team, working as a team, and that mean we are attacking as an XI.
“He may be the one in the end who finishes but he is part of 11 players. We have to attack with 11 players and we have to defend with 11 players and the front players are the first defenders.”
