Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly made an offer to sign England midfielder Angel Gomes, as they intensify their pursuit of the Lille star ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to a report from TBR, the North London club are pushing hard to secure the former Manchester United player on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Tottenham Step Up Pursuit of Angel Gomes

Gomes’ current contract with Lille is set to expire in the summer, and he has yet to agree on a renewal, leaving his future uncertain.

Spurs were strongly linked with a move for the 24-year-old in January. Transfer insider Dean Jones had claimed that the club was considering an early approach in the winter window to avoid competition. However, Tottenham ultimately opted to wait until the summer but have remained keen on bringing the midfielder to North London.

Reports from a few weeks ago suggested that Spurs had already held discussions with Gomes’ representatives regarding a summer move. With Tottenham looking to get ahead of rival clubs, they have now tabled reportedly made the player an offer in an attempt to secure a pre-contract agreement.

There is significant interest in the versatile midfielder, including from his former club Manchester United. However, it has been reported that Gomes would prefer a move to Spurs over a return to Old Trafford. Tottenham are currently leading the race for his signature, with chairman Daniel Levy personally working to finalise the deal.

Gomes’ development into a reliable central midfielder

Gomes, a product of Manchester United’s academy, left the club in 2020 in search of regular first-team football. He signed with Lille and was immediately loaned out to Portuguese side Boavista, where he impressed with his performances. Upon returning to Lille, he gradually established himself as a key player, delivering strong displays in Ligue 1 and European competitions.

Under the guidance of Lille manager Paulo Fonseca, Gomes transitioned into a central midfield role, showcasing his passing accuracy, ball retention, and creative flair. During the 2022-23 season, he registered six assists while maintaining one of the highest pass completion rates in the league, helping Lille secure European qualification.

Although injuries have limited his impact this season, Gomes has still managed 19 appearances across all competitions, contributing two goals and an assist. In 175 senior appearances across Lille, Boavista FC, and Manchester United, the versatile midfielder has made 41 goal contributions (16 goals and 25 assists).

Bringing Gomes to Tottenham could prove to be a smart move, adding a young and talented player entering his prime. His technical abilities and versatility align well with Ange Postecoglou’s vision of building a competitive squad for the future, making him a valuable addition to Spurs’ midfield options.
