In total, Tottenham Hotspur officially made four signings in the January window, as well as welcoming Dane Scarlett back from his loan at Oxford United.
Yang Min-hyeok was the first to arrive, a deal that Tottenham agreed in the summer, and the South Korean’s arrival was then followed by Antonin Kinsky, Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel.
Min-hyeok is already impressing on loan at QPR and the other three signings have regularly featured in Ange Postecgolou’s starting eleven.
In fact, Postecoglou thinks Tel needs a rest given just how much he’s already played for Spurs this season in comparison to his limited minutes at Bayern Munich prior.
However, Spurs didn’t land all of their January targets and Tottenham failed with a bid for Marc Guehi who remained at Crystal Palace.
Paul Robinson takes aim at Daniel Levy after failed Marc Guehi bid
Since and throughout January, Tottenham fans have protested against Daniel Levy for his lack of footballing ambition.
And when speaking on Stadium Astro’s coverage prior to Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester City, former Spurs player Paul Robinson seemed to agree.
The goalkeeper, who made 137 appearances for Tottenham, took aim at Daniel Levy who he worked under, saying he’s failed to back several managers including Postecoglou.
Speaking about Spurs fans being unhappy, Robinson said: “It’s been a long time now, you know, fingers are being pointed at Daniel Levy.
“I think recruitment wise, you look at the players they’ve got, the injury problems they’ve had this season have been well-documented – the players Ange hasn’t had at his disposal.
“So then we get to January, it’s nothing new, the window opens the first of January, we know we’re short in certain areas – go and get the players.
“As soon as the window opens, go and give the manager the players that he needs.
“So you take it two or three years, Spurs fans want trophies, this place craves trophies, he [Levy] goes and gets win-now managers.
“He goes and gets Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho – both of them will say that they weren’t backed with win-now players.
“So now, Ange Postecoglou, they’ve stuck with the manager, they want to see him through with his philosophy, with the way that he plays.
“What summed it up for me was the bid that they allegedly put in for Marc Guehi at the end of the January window.
“So if you want a player of that quality that’s got 18-months left on his deal, you go to Crystal Palace as soon as the window opens – you don’t put a bid in, you ask how much they want for him and then you either pay it or you don’t.
“And that’s where they’ve fallen down numerous times for me, in backing the manager with the squad depth and players that he needs.”
Tottenham can’t fail Ange Postecoglou like past managers
Interestingly, Pep Guardiola praised Tottenham’s squad depth after his Man City side beat their hosts in the Premier League.
Perhaps some will perceive that Levy did back his manager last month, making three new significant signings.
However, many Spurs fans feel as if sufficient ambition still hasn’t been shown by the level of player the club are targeting.
Tottenham are in an excellent financial position thanks to Levy’s work, but a lot of fans in N17 are unhappy with the perceived sacrifices that have been caused on the pitch.
Unless they win the Europa League this season it’ll be another trophyless campaign in north London, and perhaps one with very little progress made.
