Ange Postecoglou says that James Maddison is doing everything in his power to get back into the England squad.

Bittersweet news for Spurs fans

The England squad announcement contained some bittersweet for Spurs fans as Dominic Solanke made it into the team for the first time in seven years but Maddison missed out.

The attacking midfielder has been in sensational form this campaign, having rediscovered his mojo following a difficult end to last season.

The 27-year-old has not just been at his creative best but has also been helping Spurs build out from the back, operating in a slightly deeper role this season.

However, the Tottenham vice-captain has not done enough to force himself back into the Three Lions set-up, with Lee Carsley looking past him once again.

Postecoglou insists that Maddison has done what he can, remarking that the circumstances are beyond his control.

When asked about the former Leicester man missing out, the Tottenham head coach told Football.London: “I’m sure he is disappointed. He’s playing well, but sometimes that is all you can do. Sometimes there are certain circumstances that mean you can’t always get what you want.”

Intense competition for places

One can argue that the attacking midfield role is where England are most heavily stacked, with Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Cole Palmer all shoo-ins in the squad.

Carsley also appears to be a fan of Jack Grealish, which is why both Maddison and Eberechi Eze have missed out this time.

However, if the Tottenham man continues performing as well as he has been so far this season, it is going to be impossible to keep him out of the squad for long.
