Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison has come under scrutiny for his performances this season.
Former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes the issue stems from how he is being utilised by Ange Postecoglou.
Robinson has pointed out that Maddison is not being deployed in his most effective position, which has limited his overall impact on the pitch.
The pundit highlighted that Maddison has often been played as a deep-lying left-sided midfielder in Postecoglou’s preferred 4-3-3 formation. He argued that this role restricts the Englishman’s ability to influence the attack, as he thrives when positioned higher up the field.
According to Robinson, Maddison is most effective in an advanced playmaking role, where he can create opportunities and contribute with goals. He also emphasized that the midfielder performs at his best when given a consistent run of games, allowing him to build rhythm and confidence.
Paul Robinson on James Maddison
Speaking to Tottenham News, Robinson said:
“Maddison has been an out of the side, but you’ve got to give him credit when he does get his opportunity. He performs to his level.
“I don’t agree with where he’s played. When he played and Spurs were struggling, they played a 4-3-3.
“He’s played him as a deep-lying left-sided midfielder, and that’s not his best position. If you want to get the best out of James Maddison, you play him higher up the field than a number 10, where he can cause more damage. I saw him at the weekend.
“I thought that his reaction after the game showed his commitment, the way that he was when he went over to the supporters. I think he’s a player that plays better when he’s got a run of games, and he knows that he’s going to be playing every week.”
Despite questions over his positioning, Maddison has remained a key player for Tottenham this season. Since joining from Leicester City in June 2023 for a reported £40 million, he has made a significant impression at the club.
Upon his arrival, the 28-year-old was named vice-captain and quickly made an impact, winning the Premier League Player of the Month award for August after registering a goal and two assists in his first three matches.
Maddison is currently tied with Brennan Johnson as the Spurs’ top scorer in the Premier League, scoring nine goals this season.
His overall contributions further underline his importance to the team. With 10 goals and seven assists in 34 appearances across all competitions, Maddison ranks among the league’s best in key attacking metrics, including goals per 90 minutes (8th), goal-creating actions (5th), and non-penalty goals plus assists per 90 (4th).
As Tottenham aim to finish the season strongly, adjusting Maddison’s role on the pitch could be crucial in maximizing his influence and helping the team climb the table.
