'This felt like the end for Ten Hag - if not now, very soon'

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag wore the haunted, hunted expression of someone reaching the end of the road after Tottenham Hotspur inflicted abject embarrassment at Old Trafford.

Since United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the club's restructured hierarchy eventually chose to keep faith with Ten Hag in the summer, he has been placed in a position where he is only one bad defeat away from a crisis and unforgiving scrutiny.

Winning the EFL Cup 18 months ago and last season's dramatic FA Cup final victory against Manchester City, which effectively kept Ten Hag in a job, have been the highs among many lows – but it does not get much lower than this.

'Clock must be ticking for Ten Hag'

John Murray

Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

Well that went spectacularly badly for Manchester United. And it is impossible to conclude anything other than that the clock must be ticking loudly for Erik ten Hag.

Last season the United manager had a case when he frequently highlighted his lengthy list of injuries. But around £200m was spent on new recruits in the summer, and it’s now in the region of £600m in total on signings under Ten Hag.

The team that started against Tottenham was close to, if not actually, the strongest he has at his disposal. His coaching staff has been radically overhauled too, since the end of last season.

Ten Hag again talked of how it still all needs time, but the thousands who left Old Trafford early must have been contemplating or debating whether the manager’s time is already up.

Postecoglou revels in show of power

In overwhelming Manchester United for a fourth successive win in all competitions, Tottenham produced a complete performance - their finest since the heady early months of Ange Postecoglou's reign.

It was only two weeks ago that Spurs needed a late comeback to beat Coventry City in the Carabao Cup as the first serious questions were being asked about Postecoglou, but this thrilling display, and the manner in which a side they will regard as rivals were so comprehensively dismantled, provided a compelling answer.

Spurs were full of quality, running and power from the first whistle, the hard-to-please Postecoglou often reduced to holding his head in his hands in anguish, or throwing his hands in the air in frustration, as they carved United open with ease time and again only to somehow fail to build on Johnson's early goal.

The fear was clear, that Spurs' failure to cash in had left the door ajar for United. Postecoglou need not have worried.

'Never a red card' - Fernandes

Man United 0-3 Tottenham

Was it a harsh sending off? Did Bruno Fernandes slip before making contact with Tottenham midfielder James Maddison? These are questions that are all up for debate for today.

The Portugal international came out to speak to the media yesterday and gave his thoughts on the dismal.

"Never a red card - that is my view," Fernandes told Match of the Day.

I agree that it is a foul. The referee tried to tell me that as he saw it was a clear contact with the studs, no. I didn't touch him with the studs or even the foot, it was my ankle. It is a clear foul.

"If he wants to give me a yellow because they are going to go on a counter then I agree. But more than that, no. It is not the case."

Spurs beat dismal Man Utd

Man United 0-3 Tottenham

Getting beaten by three goals, at home, in the pouring rain, when you're already under scrutiny. Sunday was far from relaxing for Erik ten Hag.

However, let's not take anything away from Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham, who outclassed 10-man Manchester United from the opening moments. And they did it without injured captain Son Heung-min.

Brennan Johnson gave Spurs a third-minute lead, with Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke finishing the job in the second half. Postecoglou was delighted with his side's performance, calling it "outstanding".

While the Australian could revel in Spurs' comfortable victory at Old Trafford, Ten Hag had his head in hands for most of the 90 minutes, particularly when this guy was sent walking just before the break...

Good morning

"It's always a new day."

Those were the words of Erik ten Hag after Manchester United's bruising home defeat by Tottenham on Sunday. Is this the end for the under pressure Dutchman? He survived the summer, but can he hold on until Santa arrives in December? We'll be keeping a close eye on Old Trafford on this rainy Monday morning.

Liverpool are top of the league, Cole Palmer scored four for Chelsea, Manchester City were held to a draw by Newcastle, Everton picked up their first Premier League win, Arsenal left it late to beat Leicester - we'll look back at another busy weekend of top-flight football.

And guess what? There's still another game to go tonight. We're all off to the Vitality Stadium for the south coast derby between Bournemouth and Southampton.

The day is jam-packed. So let's dive straight in to the back pages and see how many puns we can find...
