Tottenham have held talks with former Barcelona skipper Sergi Roberto about a potential move this summer.
Tottenham want to ensure they have everything in place for the start of the 2024/25 season. Ange Postecoglou and their recruitment team have worked hard all summer to sign a few of their top targets and now they want to ensure they have enough depth in all areas of the pitch to try and compete for major titles this season.
According to a report from Mundo Deportivo via SportWitness, the North London club recently held talks with Sergi Roberto regarding a move to the Premier League. The 32-year-old has been a free agent since the end of June after his contract with Barcelona came to an end.
While reports suggested that the Catalan giants could look to offer him an extension, they have decided against it and the player has already said goodbye to his childhood club on Tuesday. He is on the lookout for a new opportunity and there is no shortage of interest in his services.
Clubs from the Saudi Pro League as well as the Major League Soccer want to sign the two-time Champions League winner but he is determined to continue in Europe and Spurs are one of the interested clubs.
With Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Emerson Royal leaving the club, Tottenham are looking to add depth to the midfield as well as the right-back position and Roberto could solve both those problems. He prefers playing in midfield but is capable enough to start as a right-back when needed.
While they did hold talks with the Spanish star, those talks haven’t progressed and West Ham seem to be in a much better position than Spurs in the race for the 32-year-old’s services. The report suggests that the ex-Barcelona skipper will soon make a final decision about his future amidst interest from across Europe.
