Rangers fans are worrying about a week in which Celtic are faced in the Premier Sports Cup final and Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League.

Given the recent shortage of goals scored and some of the goals being conceded, Philippe Clement should be too, if he is still manager by the middle of December.

In a double-edged sword update from Spurs, Rangers will be facing a side without their undisputed No.1 in Guglielmo Vicario, although a familiar face is set to step in.

Tottenham Hotspur announce Guglielmo Vicario injury

A statement released by Spurs confirmed that Vicario will face an extended period on the sidelines:

“We can confirm that Guglielmo Vicario has today undergone surgery for a fracture of his right ankle,” the post on X read.

“Guglielmo will be assessed by our medical staff to determine when he can return to training. We’re all behind you, Vic.”

Spurs back up goalkeeper is none other than Fraser Forster, a player who has ruined the mood of Rangers fans on more than a few occasions.

MORE RANGERS STORIES

None more so than in 2019 when a man of the match display in the league cup final saw Steven Gerrard miss out on his first trophy as Gers boss.

That, and a criminal offside decision that never was.

Gerrard was magnanimous in defeat despite missing out on silverware:

“He was certainly outstanding. I think he had one of the best games of his career today, unfortunately for us, but you have to give credit where it’s due,” praised Gerrard.

How Rangers can take advantage of Vicario injury

Five years down the line and Forster isn’t at the level he was in 2019, however, by the time that Spurs travel to Ibrox, he should have four games under his belt.

The 36-year old’s shot stopping has never been in doubt, but where he might struggle under Ange Postecoglu is in possession.

At 6ft 5inches tall and with a “bigger” frame, the England international has never been entirely comfortable playing out from the back – a key component of “Angeball”.

Going toe to toe with Spurs might not have seemed like a good idea before, with Vicario out and Forster his replacement though, it is a high-risk strategy that might just pay off.
