Tottenham Hotspur are now safe from relegation and have no chance of qualifying for European competition via their Premier League finish, so it’s all dead rubber from here on out. And that’s probably a good thing, because Spurs dropped another match at home today, this time falling 2-1 to Nottingham Forest. The Trees scored their first inside five minutes and added a second midway through the half, then parked the bus and refused to budge defensively the rest of the way. Richarlison headed in Spurs’ only goal of the match with five minutes to go in regular time, but Tottenham couldn’t find an equalizer in time.
Weirdly, take away the scoreline and it was a pretty decent performance from Spurs. Tottenham dominated possession and just about every statistical metric in this one but wasn’t able to get the ball into the net; they came closest in the second half when a lovely header from Dejan Kulusevski was inexplicably cleared off the line by Forest defender (and part-time Dr. Seuss character) Harry Toffolo. Richarlison also had a header saved, one-handed, by Forest keeper Mats Sels.
It’s not a stretch to say that Spurs got Football’d™ in this match. Good thing it doesn’t matter! Here are my match reactions to the loss, Spurs’ eighth at home this season.
Match notes
The scoreline doesn’t really tell the story of the match. Tottenham actually played pretty well! They were getting the ball forward and into the box on the regular, controlling possession and then it was like everyone forgot how to shoot. Forest sat back and parked the bus and from then it was just a struggle to get anything going. Sels had a couple of incredible saves, Tottenham missed a couple of sitters, and that’s pretty much it.
lol...lmao
You never like to see an early goal, but Anderson hit the snot out of it, and it was a bouncing knuckler of a ball that just skipped right over Vicario’s hands. He probably saves it if there weren’t so much mustard on it. Sucks, but honestly whatchagonnado?
Spurs were fortunate Forest’s second goal was called back for offside because it was another defensive breakdown and that would’ve been an awful goal to concede.
So instead Spurs just waited until Chris Wood could score off a crossed header. That one was all Vicario, who was not decisive with whether to rush out to contest the cross and got there too late to prevent the header.
Honestly, I don’t think Forest were even tearing us apart all that much, the ball just went goal and, again, watchagonnado?
Anyone who still thinks Ange doesn’t adjust his tactics — for a while in the second half he was playing with two strikers! Two! At the same time! Up top! Together!
I’ve seen enough that I’d be quite happy purchasing Tel this summer. Maybe not for €50m, but yeah, sure. Let’s get him.
So, so happy for Richarlison. He had one big chance saved, another one narrowly cut out, and finally got his goal.
I could spend a lot of time analyzing this match, but honestly, do we care? Forest ball go goal, Tottenham ball not go goal. Spurs got football’d but the result literally doesn’t matter. These are dead rubber matches from here on out. There’s literally no point getting mad about this, it doesn’t matter at all.
