The Spurs boss confirmed that he is planning to make “five or six” alterations for Monday night’s home fixture in north London, with his side having exerted a lot of energy in their vital victory in Frankfurt that sealed progress into the Europa League semi-finals on Thursday.

Sat down in 15th place, Tottenham have little left to play for in the top-flight this season and the primary focus is on their European campaign, with the first leg of the last-four tie against reigning Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimt coming up at home on May 1.

“Not really sure,” he said on Saturday. “Like I said, it's something that he's been dealing with for a little while, and we've got to the point where it not only was not improving, it was deteriorating.

“It's one of these things, I think probably rest is going to be as important as anything else with that kind of injury. So we'll give him that time, because Sonny’s the kind of guy that always wants to train … We'll just have to put him on ice for the next few days and see how he responds to that.”

Despite not being involved against Frankfurt, Postecoglou revealed that Son had been in contact with his team-mates before the result that kept their season alive and eased the significant pressure on the manager.

“Yeah. I mean, he wasn't in contact with me, but he was with the boys, obviously, and yeah he’s still a big part of it,” the Australian said. “We discussed whether he should come along, but, like I said, I think to give us the best chance of Sonny being available for the semis and beyond, it just made sense that we left him at home. But yeah, I'm sure he was very much part of the group.

“What do they call them, group chats, or whatever they are? They are part of some group. I'm not in any. I just saw him this morning, actually. I just caught him in the hallway as I was coming over and he's delighted for a number of reasons, and real motivation there to get back as soon as he can.”

In addition to Son, Tottenham could also be without Maddison against Forest after the England midfielder was taken off just before half-time in Frankfurt, having been fouled by goalkeeper Kaua Santos for the crucial penalty that was dispatched by Dominic Solanke in a 1-0 win on the night that secured a 2-1 quarter-final victory on aggregate.

“But fair to say he'll [Maddison] probably be a bit sore so he's probably a doubt for Monday. The rest of the group worked hard so they're a bit sore but should be okay for Monday night.

“Sonny will still be out. He's been dealing with this foot problem for a while so now is as good a time as any to give him time to get over it, so he'll definitely miss Monday night as well. But everyone else should be okay.”
