Tottenham pondering over Allegri’s appointment
Tottenham Hotspur suffered their 12th defeat of the 2024/25 edition of the Premier League at the Goodison Park against Everton. The Toffees led 3-0 at half-time, thanks to goals from Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Iliman Ndiaye and an own goal from Archie Gray. While Spurs tried to fight back in the latter stages of the game, strikes from Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison were not enough to salvage anything with the game ending 3-2 in David Moyes’ favour.
Ange Postecoglou’s future has come under serious doubt with the team within only one match in the English top flight since the start of December and it looks like Tottenham are already in talks with the Australian’s potential replacements. Give Me Sport has reported that the Lilywhites held informal conversations with former Juventus head coach Massimiliano Allegri and though the Italian was not offered a contract, it is a sign that Postecoglou may be on the verge of being shown the door.
Allegri has had two very successful spells at Juventus, where he won the Serie A title six times and led the Old Lady of Turin to the Champions League final twice in three years. That said, he has been linked with a number of roles in the Premier League over the recent past, especially after being fired by the Bianconeri, but Tottenham’s talks with him are the most recent development and it would not be a surprise to see them appointing a defence-minded coach to bring in some discipline to the team’s structure.
One of the key benefits with hiring Allegri would be his free agency, so Tottenham would not need to negotiate with any club per se and can hire the 57-year-old immediately if they part company with Postecoglou. That being said, there is also a relative lack of demand for coaches in the world’s most elite football clubs, so Allegri could be receptive to the chance of joining Spurs even though they might not give him all the leeway in the transfer market, in line with their previous managers.

For now, however, Postecoglou’s role does not seem to be as precarious as the media has suggested but the former Celtic coach faces a race against time and Daniel Levy could terminate his deal if the results show no signs of improving. The Carabao Cup seems like a major landmark in deciding the manager’s future and if Tottenham end up clinching the competition, their manager would very possibly live at the job until next season as a trophy would paper most of the cracks in the team.
