Tottenham Hotspur have received unsettling news regarding midfielder Lucas Bergvall, who has returned to London with an injury concern while representing the Swedish national team.
The 18-year-old Bergvall, who joined Spurs this summer following a deal that was struck back in February, has already made a notable impression in the Premier League. Arriving at the club for a fee of £8.5 million, the young talent dazzled in pre-season and has made several impactful appearances off the bench.
However, his stint with the national squad has taken a different turn as he has returned without making an appearance during the international window. Bergvall was listed among the substitutes in Sweden's recent 2-2 draw against Slovakia, but has now been ruled out of their upcoming encounter due to a minor injury complaint.
As Sweden ramps up preparations for their next test against Estonia on Monday evening, the federation confirmed Bergvall's absence, stating he would be heading back to Tottenham “to focus on rehabilitation.”
In an official statement, the Swedish national team remarked, “Lucas Bergvall has suffered a minor injury and will not be available for tonight's game against Estonia in the Nations League. The midfielder has exited the men's national team camp in Estonia to prioritize his recovery.”
The match against Estonia marks the second fixture for Sweden during this international window, following their draw with Slovakia last Thursday.
For Tottenham fans, the news is concerning, especially with a busy calendar ahead. Bergvall will be keen to recover swiftly as Spurs face a flurry of fixtures, including four Premier League clashes, two Europa League encounters, and a Carabao Cup match against Manchester City next month.
He would have been looking forward to meaningful game time, particularly after being taken off early in Spurs' victory over Qarabag due to a red card issued to defender Radu Dragusin. On that occasion, the budding player was substituted after just 12 minutes on the pitch. Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou expressed his sympathy for Bergvall, assuring that more opportunities await the young prospect.
“That’s football,” Postecoglou shared with TNT Sports. “He’s 18, and he’ll get plenty more games.”
Postecoglou mentioned the tactical adjustments made during the game, emphasizing the need for an additional midfielder while shifting to bring on a left-back, which ultimately led to Bergvall's premature exit. “Just an adjustment we needed to make, nothing against Lucas. He’ll have ample opportunities going forward.”
