Tottenham Hotspur suffer blow in Tah pursuit

Tottenham Hotspur have been looking to sign a central defender in the upcoming winter transfer window given how the Lilywhites are thin on options at the heart of defence, and the North Londoners have been subject to links with a move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah.

Ange Postecoglou has been looking to sign a new CB for a while now, given the lack of depth in the centre-back role at White Hart Lane, and with the German defender out of contract at the end of the ongoing season, multiple clubs, including Spurs, had been looking to pry his signature away from the Bundesliga club in January.

However, per a recent report from Give Me Sport, the Bundesliga champions are highly unwilling to sanction a departure for the German international in the winter window and reiterate the fact that the 28-year-old will stay at BayArena until the end of the season.

Can Tottenham hold off Tah till summer?

Spurs are willing to multiply on Tah’s €54,423-a-week wages if the player does end up moving to N17, and with the North Londoners currently lacking reliable depth at the heart of defence, it makes sense that the Australian head coach would be keen on bringing a player of the German’s calibre.

That being said, while it is important for Tottenham to bring in a centre-back when the winter transfer window comes, Daniel Levy must be looking to balance the urgency of signing a player with the potential financial setback. If Spurs can strengthen elsewhere (possibly midfield or a centre-back on loan) in January and try to hold off on Tah until the summer window, the Lilywhites can bring in a major defensive upgrade without paying a penny.
