Tottenham Hotspur eyeing English goalkeeper Sam Johnstone
Guglielmo Vicario suffered a major ankle injury in Tottenham Hotspur’s 4-0 win over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in November. What was the team’s best performance of the season was marred by yet another fitness issue, this time to a player that does not have the best possible back-up and had started every Premier League match before the setback.
Vicario’s injury was diagnosed to be a fracture that required him to undergo a surgical procedure with the Italian now ruled out until February. Though his return next month was speculated at the time of his operation, it could possibly be an optimistic timeline in some ways as the problem he sustained was rather severe.
Either way, Tottenham need to consider a goalkeeper’s signing and are looking at Wolverhampton Wanderers shot-stopper Sam Johnstone, according to Football London. The 31-year-old has lost his place to Jose Sa in the team and it has been mooted that Wolves would be happy to cash in on him, with Spurs looking to take advantage of the situation.
The former Crystal Palace star’s valuation is likely to be around the £10 million mark as Wolves will be determined to recover as much of the fee that they spent on landing him last summer. It is a figure that Tottenham will not have many problems in paying, especially given that Fraser Forster also does not have as much football in the tank.
Forster has shown a few moments of shakiness in his recent Tottenham appearances, not least in their narrow 4-3 win over Manchester United in the Carabao Cup. Moreover, at the age of 36, he cannot be a very reliable or long-term back-up option behind Vicario, so Johnstone’s signing makes a lot of sense.

It remains to be seen if Tottenham take any steps towards materialising their interest in him and if at all Wolves are prepared to let their secondary option walk away midway through the campaign.
