Tottenham have decided against sanctioning the departure of full-back Djed Spence.
The English full-back joined Spurs back in the summer of 2022. Since making the move to the North London club from Middlesbrough, he has only featured six times for their first team. Reports suggested that Ange Postecoglou’s team were ready to part ways with him but according to Football Insider, Tottenham have decided to keep him in their first-team squad for the 2024/25 season.
Spence has spent the last 18 months out on loan. He spent the first half of last season at Leeds United before joining Genoa for the second half. He featured in a total of 24 matches and contributed towards a goal.
While he still has three years left on his deal with Spurs, the 24-year-old was expected to be on the move this summer. But, it seems Tottenham have taken a u-turn on their stance and Spence is now all set to provide cover and compete with Pedro Porro for a place in the starting XI.
With Emerson Royal’s exit now confirmed, the Australian manager is now all set to count on the former Middlesbrough full-back. The Brazilian international completed a move to AC Milan in a deal worth more than £15 million.
With his departure, Tottenham only has two options at right-back. As a result, Spence now has a chance to prove his worth and establish himself in their first team under Postecoglou. He is expected to be a part of their squad for their opening Premier League fixture against Leicester City after an impressive run in the pre-season.
