TuttoSport have named one Tottenham player as a wildcard entry to the 2024 Golden Boy award shortlist – although he has barely kicked a ball for Spurs.
What is the Golden Boy award?
The Golden Boy is an award established by Tuttosport and is given to the best young footballer under the age of 21 across European football over a calendar year.
The award is voted on by journalists from across the continent while an additional prize, ‘Golden Boy Web’, is voted by fans online.
Wilson Odbert in with a chance?
TuttoSport point out that the front-runners among the 25 nominees are the likes of Ajax’s Jorrel Hato, Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho, Bayern Munich’s Aleksandar Pavlovic, PSG’s Warren Zaire-Emery, Manchester City duo, Savinho and Rico Lewis, and Barcelona pair Pau Cubarsi and Lamine Yamal.
However, they suggest that there are also five other ‘wildcards’, naming Tottenham’s Odobert as one of those.
The other wildcard options put forward are Monaco’s Ben Seghir, Benfica’s Andreas Schjelderup, Real Madrid’s Endrick, and Juventus’ Samuel Mbangula.
How the voting works
A total of 50 different journalists, who are all experts on European football, will all put forward their top five names in order. The first on each of their lists will get 10 points, and then seven, five, three, and one point for each successive position.
The player who accumulates the most points at the end of the voting will be the recipient of the 2025 Golden Boy Award.
