Tottenham Hotspur are gearing up for the summer transfer window, identifying key targets to strengthen their squad ahead of the next campaign.
One player who has caught the attention of Spurs’ recruitment team is Real Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso.
Johnny Cardoso likely to join Tottenham in the summer
The American international delivered an outstanding performance against Real Madrid last weekend, which as per the latest report from GiveMeSport, impressed Tottenham’s recruiting department and increasing the likelihood of a potential move to North London. The report states that the player is now ‘increasingly likely’ to join Spurs in the summer.
Spurs are now seriously considering activating their preferential option to sign Cardoso, which was secured as part of Giovani Lo Celso’s transfer to Betis. The agreement allows the Lilywhites to sign the 23-year-old for a set fee of €25 million during a specific two-week window in the upcoming transfer window.
Club officials view Cardoso as a promising long-term investment, believing he has the qualities needed to succeed in the Premier League. Although he recently extended his contract with Betis until 2030, Tottenham hold a strategic advantage in negotiations due to their pre-arranged purchase option.
It a recent interview, Cardoso refused to rule out a move away, stating that he will let his father and agent sort out his future in due course of time.
Cardoso has impressed with his performances of late
Cardoso began his professional career with Internacional in Brazil before making the switch to La Liga in December 2023. Since joining Real Betis, he has become a crucial figure in their midfield, making 31 appearances across all competitions while registering two goals and an assist this season.
His recent display against Real Madrid further strengthened his reputation, as he netted an important equaliser in a 2-1 victory, heading home past Thibaut Courtois from a corner kick.
With Tottenham looking to bolster their midfield, Cardoso could be viewed as a potential successor to Yves Bissouma, whose future at the club remains uncertain.
As the summer transfer window nears, Spurs will continue to track Cardoso’s development, with growing confidence that he could be a valuable addition to Ange Postecoglou’s squad.
