Tottenham want to tie Cristian Romero down to a new deal amid interest from top European clubs
Tottenham Hotspur have been exploring options to add quality and depth to the centre-back department during the winter transfer window.
The Lilywhites are in dire need of quality strength in depth at the heart of their defence, with Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin as the only options at Ange Postecoglou’s disposal. He has an established defensive duo of Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven; however, the former has been subject to links with Real Madrid in recent months.

Having not played since mid-November due to injury, Ange Postecoglou’s side have dearly felt his absence. As per reports, the South American is expected to be fit to face Bournemouth on Thursday evening in the Premier League—a player Spurs are hoping to soon tie down to a new long-term deal.
According to an exclusive report from TBR Football, Tottenham have contacted Cristian Romero’s entourage as they look to open contract talks.
The North London club have been trying to get the Argentinean to sign a new deal for some time now. This comes after Real Madrid were strongly linked with a move for the centre-back. Tottenham are now stepping up their efforts to secure the 26-year-old’s future, with the defender’s current deal expiring in 2027 (Transfermarkt).
The aforementioned report adds Tottenham hope to begin talks early in the New Year, with Romero’s camp evaluating the situation. The club hope to make the star defender their new top earner. The 2024 Copa American winner sees Champions League football as key to his future, having just played once in the competition with Spurs.

Big Ange’s side are embroiled in a top-four fight and there are no guarantees that they will be playing Champions League football next season. Keeping that in mind, it will be tricky for Daniel Levy and Co. to convince Romero into penning a new deal by the end of the year.
