Tottenham Hotspur looking to extend Rodrigo Bentancur’s contract before the summer transfer window.

Tottenham Hotspur’s Rodrigo Bentancur is leaning towards extending his stay at the club by extending his contract. The 27-year-old joined Spurs from Juventus in the January transfer window in 2022 and has been one of the key players for Ange Postecoglou’s side in recent games.

It has not always been an easy ride for Bentancur in Tottenham Hotspur colours, with the midfielder experiencing constant injuries that have kept him out of the team for a long time. Off the field problems have also been a mainstay for Bentancur. He was given a lengthy ban from the FA for his remarks on teammate Heung-Min Son last year. However, the central midfielder has been a key figure in the dressing room and Spurs also tend to play well when Bentancur is in form.

The former Juventus player was signed on a four-year contract, keeping him at the club till at least the summer of 2026. He is also two appearances away from reaching 100 appearances for Tottenham Hotspur in all competitions. However, Bentancur will be free to talk to other clubs once he reaches the final 12 months of his contract in the upcoming summer transfer window. It is believed that Tottenham Hotspur will hope to act fast and try to tie the 27-year-old to a new contract before the season ends.

Daily Mail reports that Spurs are willing to double the midfielder’s salary in a bid to keep him at the club. Bentancur currently earns £75,000-a-week and the North Club will be looking to increase his wages in a bid to keep him at the club for a number of years.

It would be a wise decision to keep the Uruguay international at the club as he is a focal point of Ange Postecoglou’s gameplan. Bentancur is known for his passes between the opposition midfield and defensive line. The midfielder is also known for his ability to defend and drop in between the two centre-backs to dictate the play.

Being a senior member of the squad, several young players like Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray could learn a thing or two from him. His European pedigree speaks for itself and tying the 27-year-old down to a long term contract would mean that Spurs will not have to worry about the midfield quality they will possess.
