Tottenham Hotspur are planning to spend a massive transfer fee for Atletico Madrid’s highly-rated talent Pablo Barrios
Ange Postecoglou has struggled to take grip of the squad in his second season at Tottenham Hotspur but the club chiefs are expected to offer him money in the summer to improve the quality of the squad.
Spurs have spent most of the season in the bottom half of the Premier League table. Despite stitching three consecutive Premier League wins, it might still not be enough for them to achieve their targets for this season—which was likely Champions League qualification. There is a route to get Champions League football back to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next season by winning the Europa League, though.
After enduring a physically and mentally taxing campaign, the Lilywhites have to make some tough decisions and offload some underperforming, high-wage players off their books and replace them with young talents. Daniel Levy and Co. have invested in highly-regarded prospects in recent transfer windows and we would not be surprised if they follow the same route in the summer.
According to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, Tottenham have expressed an interest in signing Atletico Madrid midfielder Pablo Barrios. They are willing to invest big in the ballpark of €75 million in order to get the deal done.
Highly rated within the Spanish football circuit, Pablo Barrios has emerged as one of Atletico Madrid’s most consistent performers over the last 12 months. As a result, he has even earned a cap for Spain back in November 2024.
The midfielder broke into the senior Atletico Madrid squad last season, racking up an impressive 35 appearances across all competitions. Barrios has shown great signs of improvement this season, where he has already played 25 times—including 19 La Liga appearances. The youngster’s fine performances have caught the attention of Spurs, who are willing to break the bank for him.
Should the Lilywhites table an eye-watering €75 million offer for the Spanish midfielder, it could be difficult for Atletico to not consider it in the summer. Receiving that kind of fee would provide the Rojiblancos financial relief and a chance to fortify other positions in Diego Simeone’s squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

With Tottenham in a strong financial position with no looming PSR threat, they could be well-placed to convince Barrios to make the switch to North London. Moreover, joining Ange Postecoglou’s forces at N17 would present an excellent opportunity for the Madrid-born starlet’s development, allowing him to gain Premier League experience and further his growth.
That being said, however, it would be extremely risky for the Hotspur Way chiefs to spend a huge outlay on Barrios, who remains undoubtedly talented but lacks experience. We understand the idea of bolstering the pool of young talent with future returns but spending in the region of €75 million for a player with just two seasons of La Liga experience under his belt may not be a wise idea from Tottenham.
