Tottenham remain keen on signing Johnny Cardoso from La Liga outfit Real Betis.
According to a report from Diario de Sevilla, Tottenham are very interested in securing the 23-year-old’s signature and Real Betis are under pressure to sell the player. They need to raise funds in order to balance the books and it will be interesting to see if Tottenham can get the deal done.
We have previously recovered reports, claiming Tottenham have already opened talks with the Spanish club for the player.
Four other European clubs are keen on signing the midfielder, but Tottenham have an advantage over them. When they sold Giovani Lo Celso to the Spanish club at the start of the season, they secured a first-refusal option on the American international midfielder. They will be able to sign him for a fee of around €30 million.
Spurs certainly have the financial muscle to get the deal done and Cardoso would be a quality addition for them. He has shown his quality in La Liga and he has the physicality and technical attributes to do well in English football.
The 23-year-old defensive midfielder will add physicality and defensive cover to the side. He will protect the central defenders and allow the creative players to operate with more freedom. Tottenham are lacking in depth when it comes to the midfield department and the American international would be the ideal acquisition for them. The reported asking price seems reasonable for a player of his potential. He could develop into a key player for the North London club with the right guidance.
Tottenham will be hoping to fight for trophies in the coming seasons and they need quality players at their disposal. Although they have shown improvement under their new manager, they are still a few signings away from competing against the Premier League elite.
The midfield and the defence are areas that require reinforcements. Signing a quality defensive midfielder would be a wise decision for them. They should look to invest in a quality central defender as well. They have looked quite vulnerable at the back of the season, and the two signings could help them tighten up defensively.
