Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur is facing the potential of an extended ban as he awaits the outcome of an FA charge related to comments made during a June interview.

The Uruguayan international was charged by the FA after making remarks about Spurs captain Son Heung-min during an appearance on Uruguayan television.

Bentancur’s response to the charge was due by September 19, and Tottenham now anxiously await the FA’s verdict. If found guilty, Bentancur could face a suspension of up to 12 games, as reported by Football London.

The controversy arose when Bentancur was asked about obtaining one of Son’s kits. His response, joking that it could come from “his cousin” and implying that “they all look the same,” has sparked backlash.

Beyond this FA charge, Bentancur could also face disciplinary issues within the Premier League.

The 27-year-old has already received three yellow cards in his first four league appearances this season. Should he pick up two more in the next 14 matches, he will automatically receive a one-match suspension.

This comes on the heels of Bentancur’s four-match suspension from international football, following an altercation after Uruguay’s Copa America semifinal loss to Colombia.

Tottenham will be closely monitoring the FA’s decision, as any potential ban would significantly impact their midfield depth and add pressure on the squad during a challenging stretch of the season.

Bentancur’s absence could be a critical blow as Spurs look to build momentum and maintain their competitive edge in the league.
