Tottenham Hotspur were offered the chance to sign Danish sensation Matt O’Riley before he ended up joining Brighton and Hove Albion.
Matt O’Riley was a part of the Fulham youth squad back in the day. While he did make it to their first team, things didn’t work out for him at Craven Cottage and he ended up parting ways back in 2020. However, the Danish international has returned to England after Brighton struck a deal with Celtic for his services.
Before he made the move to the Seagulls, the 23-year-old’s agents offered him to Tottenham Hotspur. But, according to Tottenham insider Paul O Keefe, the North London club turned down the opportunity to sign Matt O’Riley who was on fire in the Scottish Premiership last season. The central midfielder was involved in 49 matches across competitions and he finished with 19 goals and 18 assists. Despite his heroics, he missed out on a place in the Danish squad for Euro 2024 but his work surely didn’t go unnoticed.
While quite a few clubs were keen on his signature, the Danish international’s representatives offered him to Tottenham but they didn’t fancy the chance to sign the ex-Celtic star. The North London club decided against making a move despite needing another central midfielder and it allowed other clubs to make a move. Brighton managed to strike a deal with the Scottish club and the 23-year-old has finally made a long-awaited return to England where he has some unfinished business.
It remains to be seen whether he can hit the ground running in the Premier League now.
