Real Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso’s signing under threat for Tottenham after Wolves make offer

After a forgettable season in the Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur could look to bring in a host of reinforcements when the transfer window reopens in June.

The North London outfit sees themselves battling towards the bottom of the table, and Daniel Levy will need to splash the cash to help turn things around. As the performances and results have been mediocre, Ange Postecoglou is expected to be sacked at the end of the season and potential managerial candidates are being looked at.

The lack of quality and squad depth have led to a rough campaign for Ange Postecoglou’s side, but they still have a chance to salvage it by winning the UEFA Europa League. Winning the competition at San Mames next month would not only bring much-needed success and finances to North London, but also secure Champions League football for next season.

With the club chiefs planning to cash in on Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur being the latest Spurs star linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, there is a strong possibility that Spurs will look to bolster their midfield options.

Tottenham have been heavily linked with a move for Real Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso. The Lilywhites have a £21 million clause which allows them to buy the USA international, having agreed that when sending Giovani Lo Celso back to Real Betis last year. It is important to note that the clause is only valid from June 30th to July 10th.

Johnny Cardoso has been enjoying a fantastic season at Real Betis. The midfield enforcer has racked up 25 La Liga appearances, scoring three goals and registering an assist. The 23-year-old’s performances in the middle of the park have been among the prime reasons for Betis enjoying a rich vein of form of late and climbing up to sixth in the La Liga standings.

However, Tottenham now face a significant stumbling block in their pursuit of the American star. According to Spanish outlet Diario de Sevilla, Wolverhampton Wanderers have offered Cardoso a contract, worth three times his current salary at the Estadio Benito Villamarin.

Wolves’ chances of landing the defensive midfielder have not been ruled out, despite Spurs holding the cards. They are not the only Premier League club interested in the player. Last week’s report suggested that Manchester United are also keeping tabs on the Denville-born talent, who signed a contract with Betis until 2030 earlier this year.

Given the growing interest in Cardoso, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy must act quickly to convince him to choose Tottenham before Man United and Wolves’ interests turn into concrete proposals. Interestingly, he has not entertained much talk of a move to the Premier League and wants to continue with Manuel Pellegrini’s Betis side for many years.

That said, Spurs face an uphill task to persuade the midfielder to join them and Champions League qualification via the Europa League could help matters in the summer.
