While Liverpool leads the Premier League table, boss Arne Slot says it is still too early in the season to evaluate its title chances.

The Reds have a two-point lead over second-placed Chelsea after 15 games and are six points ahead of Arsenal, with a game in hand over both after their match at Everton was postponed due to adverse weather conditions caused by Storm Darragh.

Liverpool travels to Tottenham on Sunday in what will be a preview of their League Cup semifinal against Spurs. Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs beat Manchester United 4-3 in its League Cup quarterfinal on Thursday, a night after Liverpool booked its berth in the semis with a 2-1 win over Southampton.

Defender Destiny Udogie and forward Timo Werner are likely to be fit for Tottenham Hotspur’s Premier League home clash against leaders Liverpool on Sunday, manager Ange Postecoglou said.

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, defenders Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, and forward Richarlison remain sidelined, while midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur is suspended until the end of December.

EFL Cup: Tottenham survives scare to knockout Manchester United, enter semifinals

Tottenham Hotspur advanced into the semifinals of the EFL Cup after it survived a possible Manchester United comeback at home, beating Ruben Amorim’s men 4-3 on Thursday.

A long hug between Amorim and Postecoglou as the latter would heave a sigh of relief after that nightmare of a match. Tottenham Hotspur is in the semifinals of the EFL Cup as Manchester United, despite a valiant effort, bows out.

Jonny Evans gets in a late, late goal with a header. Two minutes to go.

Reguilon comes on for Spence.

Another howler from a ‘keeper in this match, this time from United’s Bayindir. Son curls it in from the free-kick and the goalie jumps late and fails to get the ball. It nestles into the goal. However, the goalie pleads his case to the referee, saying that he was obstructed by a jumping Bergvall, but the official just flashes the yellow card at the United goalkeeper.

Lenny Yoro makes a crucial tackle to prevent Son from getting the ball and be on the offensive.

Diallo with a blistering strike from distance but Forster matches it with a save by kicking it away!

Maddison comes off for Bergvall.

Another great team move from United, with the visiting fans powering the side up. Full-back Mazraoui is played on goal by Fernandes, the Morrocan brings the ball to his left and tries to curl it inside the net but goes wide.

Alejandro Garnacho, who wasn’t present in the matchday squad against Manchester City, is brought on for Manuel Ugarte.

Great work from Amad Diallo to run, and keep his run going at the ‘keeper as Forster lazily tries to clear the ball. However, the Ivorian dives in and the ball ricochets off the United player and gets in the net.

Bissouma almost sends the ball into his own net as he tries to clear the ball. United gets a corner, at the end of which Diallo gets a shot away but gets a deflection. Another corner.

Callous from Forster, who just made a great save to keep Zirkzee’s header. A weak pass invites Fernandes to put pressure and get the ball, toe-poke it towards Zirkzee who taps it in for United’s first goal.

Amad Diallo, Kobbie Mainoo, and Joshua Zirkzee come on for United.

Eriksen, Antony, Hojlund make way.

Solanke gets his brace as he keeps himself onside. He dribbles well against a lazy Martinez as he shoots hard, low, and through the legs of substitute Evans to add a third to Spurs’ tally.

Son dribbles in and flicks it back to an overlapping Maddison. The midfielder puts it low and across the face of the goal but Martinez tries to clear the line. However, the Argentine fails to clear the ball properly as Kulusevski smashes the ball into the net.

Solanke’s goal remains the difference between the two sides as the second half in this quarterfinal gets underway.

That’s half-time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Dominic Solanke’s goal keeps Spurs ahead in this League Cup quarterfinal against Manchester United.

Deja vu there as Eriksen goes for goal from a similar spot but finds the defender again.

Amorim is forced to make a change as he shakes his head, clearly unhappy with his side’s performance in this half. Lindelof comes off with an injury and Jonny Evans replaces him.

Lindelof on the ground as the physio tends to him. Jonny Evans is taking off his jacket and looks to be coming on for the Swede. This comes after United had a few corners and tried to equalise but to no avail.

Antony initially plays a wonderful ball to find his captain but the Portuguese medio is not able to get it in his stride. However, his side keeps the ball and it ultimately comes back to him and he tries a shot but it goes wide.

Tottenham players are bulldozing through United players with ease as Kulusevski tries to play a ball in but Ugarte gets an important touch in to put it behind for a corner.

Good spell from United, keeping the ball and creating chances. In this one, the ball arrives to Antony who tries to curl one into the far top corner but Gray stands tall and blocks it.

Son shoots the ball into the box and Kulusevski does extremely to get it under control and beat his marker with a turn. He shoots but Bayindir makes a good save at his near post.

Mazraoui fouls Spence and the Moroccan international gets booked.

Eriksen goes direct but his shot goes just over the crossbar and ripples the top net.

Sarr catches Fernandes’ leg from behind and the referee shows the midfielder a yellow card. Free-kick for United.

The former Tottenham player strikes it from the edge of the box and running on to a Dalot ball but Bissouma makes a crucial block.

Maddison takes the free-kick and plays it short to Son. The winger plays it to Bissouma, who then passes it to Porro. The defender strikes the ball from distance and Bayindir makes a save. However, Dominic Solanke is lurking around and hits the rebound as the ball gets the help of the near post and goes in. The United ‘keeper is left a spectator.

Sarr wins the ball from Martinez and the midfielder plays it for Son. The South Korean winger tees up a curling shot with his right foot but the attempt goes way off target.

Fernandes plays the Norwegian forward through on goal but the United striker is hounded by a couple of white shirts inside the Tottenham box, and hence fails to keep possession of the ball.

Eriksen plays it in but Forster seems to be get a punch on it. Ball still not cleared as Lisandro Martinez tries to cushion it into a corner but the volley goes wide.

While Spurs have shown that they can ease through United’s backline, Ruben Amorim’s side is yet to settle some early nerves which are clearly visible through clumsy gameplay.

Bissouma wins the ball in the middle of the park as Son gets the ball to the edge of the box. He passes it to the player on the left flank but the South Korean fails to reach the cross in on time. Let off for the visitor.

The first half is underway at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Manchester United gets us underway.

Son with the captain’s armband, Bruno skippering United as usual. Handshakes going around in the tunnel of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Don’t suppose such niceties will be shown on the pitch. Players make their way out.

Diallo’s current purple patch began under Ruud van Nistelrooy, who had taken over the reins from Ten Hag as the interim manager. Since then, the youngster has racked up eight goal contributions across competitions.

The two sides met earlier this year in the Premier League in a match which ended 0-3 in favour of the Spurs. That time, the United boss was Dutchman Erik ten Hag.

His successor in Amorim will be coming into this knockout match after a derby day win against Manchester City in the league.

On the other hand, Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs ended a five-match winless streak across competitions after handing a 5-0 drubbing to Southampton in the league. However, the Greek coach will not have a few players at his disposal against the Red Devils.

Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Richarlison will only return in the new year, with Destiny Udogie doubtful for the Cup clash, the coach said on Wednesday.

In the United camp, Mason Mount will be missing the match with an injury while Noussair Mazraoui remains doubtful, Amorim confirmed.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur’s appeal against the length of his seven-game suspension has been dismissed, the Football Association said on Tuesday.

The Uruguayan was banned for making a racist remark about teammate Son Heung-min.

Bentancur had denied the charge, but an independent regulatory commission found it to be proven, and the FA imposed the suspension and a 100,000 pounds ($126,930) fine last month on the 27-year-old.

Spurs then appealed, arguing the sanction was too “severe”.

“This appeal was dismissed following a hearing, and the seven-match suspension remains as ordered by the Regulatory Commission,” the FA said in a statement.

Bentancur will miss the League Cup quarterfinal against Manchester United on Thursday and a key Premier League game against Liverpool at home on Sunday.

Premier League 2024-25: Tottenham hits five first-half goals in thrashing of Southampton

Tottenham Hotspur scored five goals in the opening half of a Premier League game for the first time in its history as it thrashed bottom club Southampton 5-0 away on Sunday.

James Maddison scored twice, his first after 36 seconds and his second on the stroke of halftime, while Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski and Pape Matar Sarr were also on target.

As Southampton imploded, many of its fans left well before the interval, although those that stayed at least watched their team recover a modicum of pride in the second half.

Victory was a welcome boost for Spurs who had managed only one point from their last three league games. They moved up to 10th with 23 points from 16 games.

Southampton’s 13th league loss of the season left the side on five points and it look destined for a rapid return to the Championship as it languishes nine points from the safety zone.

Some supporters voiced their disapproval at manager Russell Martin with one fan’s banner calling for him to be sacked, which he eventually was.

“I’m hurt at the first half. We just don’t respond very well to setbacks as a group,” Martin said. “I didn’t recognise our team in the first half. It’s a tough night.

“We have no choice but to work and fight, it’s all I’ve done since I’ve been in this job.”

CONFIDENT SPURS

Injury-hit Tottenham has looked fragile in recent weeks, winning only once in eight games in all competitions, and Southampton may have sensed an opportunity.

But from the moment Djed Spence’s sublime pass sent Maddison clear to fire the opener past Alex McCarthy the confidence flooded back, although they were helped by a shocking first-half display by Saints.

Son thumped in the second after 12 minutes as Southampton failed to cut out a cross and a couple of minutes later the South Korean’s pass into the area fell to the feet of Kulusevski to score from close range.

Sarr showed great footwork after controlling Son’s pass to slot home Tottenham’s fourth goal by which time the St Mary’s stands were rapidly emptying.

Maddison netted his second in first-half stoppage time, latching onto Son’s pass and scoring from a tight angle into the opposite top corner.

Spurs took their foot off the gas after the break and ended the game with four teenagers on the pitch as manager Ange Postecoglou rung the changes ahead of a League Cup quarter-final at home to Manchester United on Thursday.

“It was outstanding by the players. We had a tough European game away on Thursday night,” Postecoglou said, referring to the 1-1 draw away to Rangers in the Europa League.

“We had 10 first-team players unavailable tonight and for the lads to come out with that much energy was great.”

Manchester City’s midfield problems have mounted after Mateo Kovacic was ruled out for up to a month by manager Pep Guardiola because of an undisclosed injury.

Guardiola confirmed Kovacic returned from the international break injured. The midfielder was hurt playing for Croatia against Portugal in the Nations League, and was substituted at halftime.

“Will be a while,” Guardiola said. “Three weeks or a month.”

Kovacic’s importance to City has grown with Rodri, the team’s first-choice holding midfielder, having been ruled out for the rest of the season with an ACL injury. Ilkay Gundogan, who is 34, might have to drop back to play at the base of midfield.

Guardiola had better news about his defense, with center backs John Stones and Manuel Akanji returning to training and Nathan Ake also available.

Premier League 2024-25: Postecoglou says Spurs’ inconsistency down to him

Description

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou took responsibility for his side’s inconsistency this season after they fell to a shock 2-1 home loss to promoted Ipswich Town in the Premier League on Sunday.

Having eliminated Manchester City in the League Cup before beating Aston Villa 4-1 in the Premier League last weekend, Spurs was stunned by Galatasaray 3-2 in the Europa League on Thursday.

On Sunday, boos rang out from Spurs fans at the final whistle as Ipswich claimed their first Premier League victory since April 2002. The defeat left Spurs in 10th place with 16 points from 11 matches.

“The inconsistency we’re having this year, ultimately it comes down to me and my approach and something I need to try and fix and see if I can help the players in that area,” Postecoglou told reporters.

The Australian did not think Spurs’ Thursday-Sunday run of fixtures was the reason for their struggles. “If we were seeing that we’d probably feel it more at the end of games and we’re not feeling it at the end of games,” he added.

Midfielder Pape Matar Sarr and striker Dominic Solanke both left Sunday’s game due to injury but Postecoglou thought both players had avoided serious problems.

“I think Pape is all right. He just got a bit of a knock,” he added. “Dom jarred his knee, it was pretty sore but he wanted to continue. Hopefully it is nothing serious.”

Premier League 2024-25: McKenna hails landmark victory for Ipswich at Tottenham

Description

Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna described his side’s shock 2-1 triumph at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday as a landmark victory in the club’s history.

Goals by Sammie Szmodics and Liam Delap earned promoted Ipswich their first Premier League win for 22 years and lifted them out of the relegation zone.

“I’m not going to shy away from it, it’s a really significant moment and a day to cherish in the recent history of the football club,” McKenna, who masterminded back-to-back promotions to lead the so-called Tractor Boys back to the top flight, told reporters.

“Look at the journey the club’s been on the last 22 years, the ups and downs, some of the depths, I think for the supporters to see their club win in the Premier League at a fantastic club like Tottenham, against a team like that, in a stadium like this, is a massive day for them.”

Ipswich has impressed this season with the style of football but was the only team in the Premier League not to have won a game heading into the game at Tottenham.

But they took a 2-0 lead and although Rodrigo Bentancur pulled one back for the hosts, they hung on.

“For those of us who have been on the journey for the last couple of years it’s a really significant day as well,” McKenna said. “From where the club has come from, competing in the first few Premier League games was a big step, but now of course, making that next step and winning a game, is a really, really significant landmark in the journey.

“As we’ve said many times, it’s a relatively new group coming together, trying to adjust to the demands of the Premier League and, for many, to a new club as well. So it’s a really significant step for them.”

Heading into the international break, Ipswich has eight points from 11 games and are in 17th position.

Musician Ed Sheeran, the club’s best-known fan and who played a role in the design of the pink kit the club wore on Sunday, shared the joy of the team as he popped into the dressing room after the final whistle.

“He congratulated the boys. It was nice to see him. We had his designed (pink third) kit on today, so maybe that brought us a little bit of luck!” McKenna, a former Tottenham youth team player and who began his coaching career there, said.

“We’ll have a few days off now and we’ll then have a nice long run in to another brilliant game after the break.”
