Tottenham: Who is Yang Min-hyeok and is he ready for Spurs?

Description

The turn of the year represents a chance for Yang Min-hyeok to be registered by Tottenham ahead of a potential first team debut.

The 18-year-old winger has already been in London for two weeks, staying at the lodge at Spurs' training ground with his agent, taking English lessons and undergoing a physical programme put in place by his new club.

His first visit to Tottenham's modern 61,000-seater stadium was to watch the 4-3 win over Manchester United in the Carabao Cup.

But, after getting 12 goals and six assists in his maiden season at Gangwon FC, the question will be whether Min-hyeok is ready for the rigours of English football.

Part of those accompanying the teenager to London were staff from his former club, including CEO Byung-ji Kim, who was a legendary goalkeeper before running one of the K League's most progressive clubs.

When asked about Min-hyeok's arrival into North London, Kim cited the influence of captain and compatriot Son Heung-min: "Everyone knows Sonny is an icon in Korea. I know they spoke but I don't know exactly what was said. I just know we had a lot of clubs contacting us about Yang in and around April - not just Spurs - but he only had eyes for them.

"Despite him never visiting London, like all Koreans, Son had an impact on him. This is the most watched club in Korea."

Min-hyeok will now have to make the gargantuan leap from Korean football to Premier League-level.

It won't be easy, admits Kim, but he says the teenage attacker's personality will help him handle comparisons with Son and adapt, adding: "We knew his potential before he even made his debut for the club but what convinced me of his readiness was a good performance in pre-season against Russian side Dynamo Moscow, which for a 17-year-old, was exceptional.

"I think his creativity will immediately be an asset in the Premier League but he needs to bulk up physically and show he can perform the level of high sprints needed at Tottenham.

"But he is quick, can play on the left and the right, uses both feet and has similarities to Son but is more of a creator than goal scorer. If you met him, you'd see his personality is humble and a bit shy but on the pitch he is enthusiastic, competes very well and builds good relationships with his team-mates.

"What impressed me is that he thought only about football when in Korea, avoiding direct requests to be interviewed on big TV shows in Korea. That wasn't something we told him to do but he did it himself. I've told him English football is hard but to stay at this level for at least two or three years.

"I don't worry about him feeling the pressure of copying Son as he is a calm, level-headed person."

Min-hyeok is far from the first Korean to come to the Premier League, but along with Brentford's Kim Ji-soo, they are the first teenagers to directly leave the league for English football.

It is a positive trend, according to Kim, who met staff at Chelsea's academy, along with other executives from other clubs in European football on his trip, said: "English clubs are looking at our talent at a younger and younger age - as they do in South America, other European markets and in Africa.

"I use these trips to Europe to meet many people. We hope many Korean players come to Europe through Gangwon FC. It is a personal ambition of mine. We need to sell to Europe to get transfer fees and it is a win-win.

"Also, when I was a player, my career goal was to play for the national team but when I talk to kids they just want to play in the Premier League or Champions League. I want them to realise their dreams."

Tottenham 2-2 Wolves: Jorgen Strand Larsen late equaliser denies Ange Postecoglou's side victory as Vitor Pereira's impressive start at Wolves continues

Description

Jorgen Strand Larsen's late equaliser continued Vitor Pereira's impressive start as Wolves boss after a chaotic Premier League draw with Tottenham.

Wolves took an early lead when the unmarked Hwang Hee-chan swept the ball low into the corner from the edge of the box after the Spurs defence had switched off at a free-kick.

Spurs equalised shortly afterwards thanks to Rodrigo Bentancur, who glanced a powerful close-range header beyond Jose Sa from Pedro Porro's corner.

Tottenham were awarded a penalty when Andre brought down the fleet-footed Brennan Johnson only for Sa to guess correctly and deny Son Heung-min

It did not stymie Spurs' attacking intent and a neat interchange between Dejan Kulusevski and Johnson inside a crowded area culminated in the latter striking a low shot.

Tottenham had chances to increase their lead in the second half but failed to take them.

Dominic Solanke was unable to get on the end of a Timo Werner cross into the six-yard box while Kulusevski perhaps should have done better when he broke clear.

Wolves were content to hang in the contest and levelled with three minutes of normal time remaining when substitute Strand Larsen beat Fraser Forster at his near post with a rasping angled shot.

Spurs piled on the pressure during 11 minutes of added time but were unable to contrive a winner and finish December with just five points from a possible 21.

What did you make of Tottenham's display?

Have your say on Wolves' performance

Ange's Spurs bewitch, baffle and bewilder again

This Tottenham performance was a microcosm of life under Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham went 1-0 down for the 15th Premier League home game in 2024, the most ever by a side in a single calendar year in the competition, after a bewildering lack of defensive concentration.

Hwang collected a free-kick rolled across the 18-yard box by Rayan Ait-Nouri and was afforded the freedom of the Tottenham Stadium to pick his spot.

Yet that was followed by patches of bewitching football as Postecoglou's favoured high-energy attacking approach got the backsides of the Spurs fans off their seats.

The manner in which Kulusevski and Johnson combined to put Tottenham in front, in particular, was pure silk.

Equally, the apparent lack of game management towards the end of the contest with three points there for the taking was baffling and allowed Wolves to snatch a point.

Spurs' performance even spilled over into the comedic at times. Bentancur and Solanke both ending up on the turf after colliding when they attempted to shoot for goal at the same time.

As 2024 draws to close Postecoglou reflected in his programme notes on the progress made during the past 12 months.

However, Spurs are guaranteed to be lower than seventh in the league at the turn of the year for the first time since the 2008-09 season.

What 2025 holds for Postecoglou, and Tottenham, is anyone's guess.

Tamworth FC: 'Tickets for club's biggest game are priceless'

A row over ticket prices for a non league club's upcoming FA Cup fixture against a Premier League side is unfair, according to a supporter's club chairman.

Some Tamworth FC fans took to social media to complain about the £42 cost for an adult to sit in the main stand, about double the price of a typical matchday ticket, for the game against Tottenham Hotspur.

Scott Farrington, 34, a life-long supporter of the National League club, in Staffordshire, said the fixture marked the biggest game in the town's history and that the tickets were "priceless".

Tamworth FC has been contacted for a comment.

But Mr Farrington said the money would help the part-time club grow.

"You can't put a price on these tickets in my opinion," he said.

"We're playing Tottenham Hotspur, a top-six Premier League team.

"We're a tiny club, we need the financial revenue to keep the club in this league."

Not everyone agrees with the price rise. Christian James, a writer for The Non-League Paper, called the situation "awful".

"[My] thoughts with regular matchgoers and in particular families just after Christmas," he wrote on X.

"[I] enjoyed my trip to Tamworth... last season and [am] looking forward to returning in a few weeks but this sours the goodwill and support from wider football."

Mr Farrington said he hoped the fixture's revenue would go some way to giving players full time contracts and improving the club's infrastructure.

The club has won back-to-back promotions in the past two years and sit 15th in the National League.

Tamworth would have been looking at an even bigger pay day had the fixture been held at Tottenham's 62,850-capacity stadium - but that would have meant even higher costs for fans due to travel.

Tottenham injury news: Ben Davies suffers setback as Spurs could be without fit centre-back

Description

Tottenham could be without any fit centre-backs for Sunday's Premier League game against Wolves after Ben Davies suffered a setback in his recovery.

The Wales international, 31, has been out since 5 December with a hamstring injury.

Davies had been nearing a return, but manager Ange Postecoglou said on Friday: "No, he is ruled out. Unfortunately he had a setback in training, so he'll probably be out for a couple of weeks."

Radu Dragușin will also be assessed after he was forced off with an ankle injury in Thursday's defeat by Nottingham Forest.

If the Romanian is ruled out he would join Davies and Spurs' other centre-backs Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero on the sidelines.

"A bit early to tell," Postecoglou said of Dragușin's injury.

"He obviously tweaked his ankle last night and felt he couldn't continue. We'll have to wait and see."

After Dragusin limped off in the 87th minute of the 1-0 defeat at Forest, Spurs finished with 18-year-old Archie Gray, who has been filling in in defence, and fellow midfielder Yves Bissouma in the centre-back roles.

Full-back Djed Spence is also suspended for the 15:00 GMT kick-off against Wolves as Postecoglou said the injury crisis is the worst he has faced in his managerial career.

"There's always been issues at different times but not to this extent," he added.

"I think we've had close to pretty consistently 10 first-team players not available for a significant run of games.

"We've been kind of getting through it for quite a while and keeping our fingers crossed we don't get any more issues, but the nature of football and fixture scheduling we've had, we've always been on a fine line of being able to get through.

"It's another test for us, but it is what it is, and whatever we need to deal with, we'll deal with and get ready for Sunday."

The Forest defeat was Spurs' ninth of the season and left them 11th in the Premier League.

They play Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-finals next month and Postecoglou said he still feels the support of the club's fans despite the increased pressure and criticism of his attacking style.

"They love their football club, they care about their football club and they want their football club to succeed," said the Australian. "They make those feelings and emotions seen.

"I haven't felt anything but support since I have been here. I still feel that support is there. I will keep doing what I think is the right thing to bring success to this football club, that doesn't change."

Nottingham Forest 1-0 Tottenham: Fan views

Description

We asked for your thoughts after Thursday's Premier League game between Nottingham Forest and Tottenham.

Here are some of your comments:

Forest fans

Matt: Definitely looking very solid. Never worried now when the opposition are attacking. Nikola Milenkovic and Murillo along with Ola Aina and Neco Williams are so strong at the back, leaving Mats Sels with very little to do, which is a goalkeeper's dream. The target now is to keep this squad of players and sign them on longer contracts. Every one of these players will go down in history as part of Forest's best Premier League side. Thirty years ago this season (1994-95), we finished third and that was the season that made me a Forest supporter.

Tim: It's time Forest started getting due notice. Breaking Brentford's long home record, now shutting down free-scoring Spurs. Everyone points out the rapid-fire counter-attacking tactics, but few teams can stop it. Forest are a brilliantly coached and organized organisation. Long may it last!

Abbott: After all the early-season chatter about tactics, one-off displays, punching above our weight and being a surprise package, it's now just plain and simple - we're just a good team. That's it... the sleeping giant is stirring in the Forest of Nottingham.

Dave: Rock solid at the back, clever, quick and incisive on the break - Forest are a joy to watch and set up perfectly to win matches. Nuno, the chairman, the players and the fans are all on the same page. Reminds me of the Brian Clough days.

Spurs fans

Alan: Fair play to Forest - they did a number on us and took their goal well. We didn't play that badly but we don't have the players to play a high line, yet we continue to do so and lo and behold we keep shipping goals. I get Ange Postecoglou's philosophy but if we don't start winning soon we are going to be bang in trouble.

Mob: Ninth loss from 18 games played. Another poor performance today where we struggled to break down a team playing a low block. Team performance was once again poor. We didn't look like we were going to score, period! It's pretty much a rinse-and-repeat situation, with the same one-dimensional tactics. Ange is out of his depth, and any optimism I had is well and truly gone.

Richard: Weak, stale, devoid of direction and leadership. We looked very ordinary, lacking any true star power, or even an in-form player. The Forest game was not about Ange's tactics; rather it was all about the skill level of our players and their ability to win a tackle and make an accurate, productive pass.

Tottenham news: MOTD on players needing to take criticism

Joe Hart told Match of the Day about the approach his former manager Ange Postecoglou will have towards his Tottenham players after a fourth defeat in five Premier League games: 'It's definitely a difficult moment as a team - Ange requires everyone to be singing from the same hymn sheet.

"It will be analytical - the meetings pre and post-match are very important in the way he works with his team. He's not necessarily one to sit down and have conversations but the pre and post are so important.

"There will be the 'dreaded ring' going round you when things are going wrong in those meeting rooms, so Spurs players are going to have to take it on the chin and take harsh criticism.

"Ultimately, he's going to want them purring, playing the good football we know they're capable of but just more consistently."

Tottenham: Ange Postecoglou says club "need to reinforce" during January transfer window

Submitted by daniel on
Picture

Description

Tottenham are "short in a couple of areas" and "need to reinforce" during the January transfer window, says manager Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs have lost three of their past four Premier League games to slip to 11th in the table, and were beaten 6-3 at home by Liverpool on Sunday.

That run has coincided with injuries to key players, including goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, and defenders Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.

Speaking before the club's trip to fourth-placed Nottingham Forest on 26 December, Postecoglou confirmed the club intend to strengthen in January.

"Like I said a while ago, we've been planning. A lot of it was going to be around where we're at around this time. Fair to say we're still a little bit short in a couple of areas and we need to reinforce," said Postecoglou.

"January's trickier in terms of what sort of players you can bring in. For us, ideal - for any club, I guess - you want to bring in people who are going to make you stronger."

Despite Tottenham's indifferent Premier League form, they are through to the Carabao Cup semi-finals after a thrilling 4-3 win against Manchester United earlier this month.

They are also in contention to qualify for the next phase of the Europa League, and play Tamworth in the third round of the FA Cup on 12 January.

"It's not like our schedule's going to ease up at any stage. So I think it makes sense. We will try and reinforce," added Postecoglou.

"You don't just want to panic and bring in anybody, that you don't think will help our cause in the back half of the year, but I think we've already shown we are pretty methodical and prudent about our work."

Postecoglou has faced questions over Spurs' recent Premier League results and his tactics, but he refused to place any of the blame on his players.

He added: "They are giving absolute maximum effort and that's backed up by the physical parameters you put against what they're doing. They're trying to do it in the way that I'm asking them to. So how can I be critical of that?"

Postecoglou also defended his reaction last week, where he accused a Match of the Day reporter of discounting the impact of Tottenham's defensive injuries after their defeat by Liverpool.

"I wasn't angry, but I don't know many managers that bounce into interviews after a defeat and are all cheery," he said.

"Fair to say I am getting tired of the same questions over and over, and perhaps after a defeat it's easier to get a reaction."

Does anyone else struggle to remember what happened on Boxing Day in the Premier League last year?

Let's take a look...

A Chris Wood hat-trick against his former club gave Nottingham Forest a 3-1 win at Newcastle.

Iwobi plays Santa with his Christmas shop

Fulham

Alex Iwobi has been spreading festive cheer in east London by opening up his own temporary shop.

The Fulham and Nigeria star has been giving out free food, including turkeys, to local residents struggling to pay for their Christmas dinner.

BBC Sport went along to Alexpress to see Iwobi in action behind the till.

Footballers at Christmas

Clinton Morrison

Former Republic of Ireland striker on BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club

What I didn't like was an away game on Boxing Day. You would train in the morning, go and have Christmas dinner with your family then travel in the night. But you have to accept it, you are a professional footballer so you have to leave your family to do that.

I used to love the home games, meeting in the morning. I liked playing on Boxing Day, and now I'm a pundit I love it even more. And I would never get booked to miss it!

Listen to the Monday Night Club here.

Do footballers train on Christmas Day?

The festive period in England is littered with football and that means that footballers do have to train on Christmas Day.

You'll see many a picture of a player wearing a Santa hat or some footage released by clubs enjoying some Christmas fun.

"When you have your kids there playing with their new toys and you have to go training, that is a big sacrifice. It's not about money - it's just human nature," former Sheffield United, Tottenham and Fulham midfielder Michael Brown told the BBC.

Haaland's return - FPL tips & team of the week

Thomas Woods

BBC Sport senior journalist

It looks very much like there will be a Boxing Day bonanza for Fantasy Premier League players, with the top three all at home including Liverpool against a leaky Leicester City side.

Struggling champions Manchester City also have what would, in normal times, be a plum home game for them against Everton.

However, it is also prime rotation season so who, aside from the obvious big names, should you target this week?

Bukayo Saka's injury at least makes picking between premium assets a touch easier.

You can find our tips and hints here.

'It's another big challenge for us'

Chelsea v Fulham (Thurs, 15:00 GMT)

Fulham

Fulham boss Marco Silva on Enzo Maresca's Chelsea: "Very, very good. It is quite clear there. A football club that has spent money in such a short period of time, the quality was there. For young players, it's not easy to find a club with so many young players performing. They are very good and very confident to play in that system. They have been dominant in most of their games. It's another big challenge for us."

'We need to keep assessing them'

Chelsea v Fulham (Thurs, 15:00 GMT)

Fulham

Fulham boss Marco Silva on team news: "Too early to be sure about some players. We need to keep assessing them. The games come thick and fast. Less time to recover between games. We will take a decision for Boxing Day's match."

On Emile Smith Rowe: "He got a big knock on his ankle so let's see and we will make a decision."

Barry-Murphy to join Foxes

Liverpool v Leicester (Thurs, 20:00 GMT)

Nick Mashiter

BBC Sport football news reporter

Brian Barry-Murphy is due to be appointed Leicester's new first team coach under Ruud Van Nistelrooy.

The former head coach of Manchester City's elite development squad is available after leaving the club in the summer.

Ex-Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Barry-Murphy, who also managed Rochdale, is expected to link up with the Foxes once the move is finalised, with the deal not yet signed.

Van Nistelrooy said: "It's not official yet but I can confirm, 99.9 per cent is done on the contracts. I'm very happy to add him to the coaching team.

"It's a very important factor in the translation of the game model to the training pitch, developing the team, the unit and individual to the max.

"He is excellent in that and I'm very happy to add him to the team."

'We did not defend the box well enough'

Bournemouth v Crystal Palace (Thurs, 15:00 GMT)

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Galsner reflects on the 5-1 loss to Arsenal: "We trained today on what we think we have to improve. We prepare like we always do. It's box defending, not about the whole defence. We defended the box not good enough. [Their] players had three yards of space."

'It's important to stay stable'

Liverpool v Leicester (Thurs, 20:00 GMT)

Nick Mashiter

BBC Sport football news reporter

Leicester go to Liverpool on Boxing Day after Sunday's 3-0 defeat to Wolves saw them miss the chance to go eight points clear of their relegation rivals.

Wolves, who occupy the final relegation spot, now just just two points behind the 17th placed Foxes.

But Ruud Van Nistelrooy has refused to create a drama around the defeat.

"If you are going to evaluate it into a drama or success that's not the way to work as professionals," he said. "It will be highlighted in the media and fans reacting, it's the world we live in.

"We know we're here for the long run and we know the end of the season is the finish line where we have to be in a position to stay in the league.

"I'm not going to create a drama every week or celebrate a win every week. Whatever occurs it's important to stay stable."

'I don't care about Christmas'

Wolves v Manchester United (Thu, 17.30 GMT)

Manchester United

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim on the Premier League's Christmas schedule: "I just want to win. I don't care about Christmas. I'm just focused on we need to win the next match.

"That's the only thing. It's very good for the fans. We are that. We are privileged. We are privileged.

"So we can play on Boxing Day to give some happiness to the fans and we want so bad to win another game."

Liverpool look team to beat in title race after thrashing Spurs

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou lifted the famous line from the movie Gladiator following the wild ride of victory over Manchester United when he asked: "Are you not entertained?"

It was Postecoglou's way of answering questions about his cavalier approach, after Spurs threatened to concede a 3-0 lead in Thursday's Carabao Cup quarter-final before winning 4-3.

The problem is that Postecoglou's idea of entertainment works two ways - as he and Spurs found out to their cost as they were brutally punished by Liverpool in front of their own supporters.

Liverpool certainly found Spurs highly entertaining in a 6-3 win that was nowhere near an accurate reflection of their superiority. It demonstrated why Arne Slot's team are in control of the title race with a four-point lead over Chelsea at Christmas, with a game in hand, while Spurs languish in 11th place, eight points off fourth.

Entertainment is never a problem with Spurs under Postecoglou. But pleasure is laced with an element of sporting torture when they are exposed to a team of Liverpool's world-class attacking quality.

There have now been 30 goals in Spurs' past five games. Entertaining all right, but 10 of those have been scored against Postecoglou's team in successive home league defeats by Chelsea and Liverpool. In the latter case, the only question was how Liverpool only scored six while somehow conceding three.

Liverpool's expected goals total was 4.6 to Spurs' 1.2. Slot's team, measured by Opta statistics, carved out nine big chances - testimony to their dominance as well the defensive vulnerability Postecoglou shows little sign of addressing with extra pragmatism.

It would unfair on Postecoglou and Spurs not to point out that he is missing first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario as well as central defenders Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven. These are big absentees for a team playing in such an open style, especially Van de Ven, whose pace is so crucial to Postecoglou's favoured high line.

Spurs are stretched on numbers, meaning Postecoglou fielded an unchanged side from that which faced Manchester United on Thursday.

No such problems for Liverpool, however, who have now won 12 and drawn three of their 16 league games this season. They also have the highest goal difference of plus 21.

The transition from Jurgen Klopp to Slot has been remarkable in its seamlessness, helped by Mohamed Salah's apparent determination to rewrite Liverpool's record books, whether he extends his Anfield contract or not.

Slot has taken what Klopp left him and has, if anything, shaped it into a more controlled, measured machine, with Salah as its spearhead.

The two goals he scored in the second half took him to a remarkable tally of 229 goals in 373 games, moving ahead of the legendary Billy Liddell - who was so influential during his Anfield career that they were often renamed "Liddellpool" - and into fourth place on the club's list of all-time scorers.

And to show just how good Salah has been, Liddell scored 228 in 534 games, with his 228th goal coming in his 526th appearance.

Salah is now behind Gordon Hodgson with 241 - would you back against him overhauling that this season? - World Cup winner Roger Hunt with 285 and record holder Ian Rush with 346.

He has now scored and assisted more than 10 goals in the Premier League this season, with 15 goals and 11 assists. With just 16 games played, this is the joint-quickest that a player to hit double figures in both categories in a single Premier League campaign since Harry Kane, who also took 16 matches to do it, in 2020-21.

It is also the sixth Premier League season in which Salah's goals and assists totals have both reached double figures. No-one in the Premier League era can match that.

The statistics offer a numerical measure of Salah's influence and significance but it goes wider than that - all the more reason why Liverpool must surely be prioritising his signature on a new contract.

Slot might have looked as if he was taking on the impossible job when he succeeded Klopp in the summer, but Liverpool's appointment of the former Feyenoord coach looks more like a masterstroke with every passing week.

He has won 21 of his first 25 games in charge, the fastest any manager has reached such a figure in charge of a top-flight English club since William Suddell with Preston in 1888-89.

And with this latest spectacular triumph, it means this is only the third time in Liverpool's history they have reached Christmas Day without being beaten away from home.

Slot's calm demeanour and analytical, meticulous approach, differs from Klopp's more emotion-driven style: low-key waves to Liverpool fans replacing the frantic fist pumps. The current team is a reflection of his personality. The league leaders still possess the attacking riches and threat of his predecessor but with the Dutchman's tweaks adding greater composure.

He said: "Being top of the league tells you we are a very good team. There are still three games to go until halfway, but if you come here and play the game we did, then it shows you we are a very hard team to beat. If it was easy to win the league then every team would do it."

This is the 21st time Liverpool have led the league on Christmas Day. They have gone on to win the title in 11 of those previous 20 seasons.

In contrast, this was a day of suffering for Postecoglou as another goal glut meant Spurs have conceded 31 goals in Premier League home games in 2024. That is the most they have shipped at home in the league in a calendar year since the 34 they lost in 2007.

He said: "It was a painful one. Credit to Liverpool. They were too good for us. They're in a great moment, great form, feeling confident. It was a bridge too far for us."

If this was a bridge too far for Spurs, there currently seems little to limit the journey Liverpool might take under Arne Slot.
