Ange Postecoglou rubbishes 'hysteria' around Tottenham Hotspur relegation talk

Ange Postecoglou has poured scorn over the notion that Tottenham Hotspur could have been relegated this season, dismissing the subject as nothing more than "hysteria" that was "framed around putting pressure on me and the club."

Spurs had been in a downward spiral over the festive period, dropping as low as 15th in the Premier League table, with an injury crisis derailing their campaign. But a 4-1 win over Ipswich Town on Saturday marked their third victory in a row as the north London club eye a positive end to the season.

Before their recent revival, there had been some talk that Spurs were relegation candidates, but Postecoglou dismissed the idea that they were ever at threat of going down when it was suggested to him that his side were now safe from the drop following Saturday's win.

"It goes to show you how ridiculous a notion it was to start with," Postecoglou told a news conference. "People saying we're safe with 12 games to go, and people are actually talking about it. That's the hysteria. And that's all framed around putting pressure on me and the club. I get that, when you're in that position you've got to accept that.

"For me, it was always about trying ... We always had the [Aston] Villa FA Cup game as a marker for us. We've got to get to that space as best we could. We obviously didn't get the outcomes we wanted during that time. But not through a lack of will or effort from the players. That was always my primary concern, to protect them and support them. Because they gave everything during that period. Now they've got some help, they've got some rest.

"Like I said, we're not happy where we are in the league, obviously, it's unacceptable. But we've got an opportunity to address that."

A first-half brace from winger Brennan Johnson helped Spurs earn their victory at Portman Road. Johnson picked up a calf injury against Arsenal in mid-January but returned to the starting line-up on Saturday.

Spurs' injury-hit side lost in the Carabao Cup semifinals to Liverpool and the FA Cup fourth round at Villa but still have plenty to play for, with a place in the quarterfinals of the Europa League their reward if they can beat AZ Alkmaar next month.

"We have always tried to believe," Johnson said. "When we have all the players back, we won the last two Premier League games and that's something we wanted to keep in mind. We played good football [against Ipswich] but also defended well.

"When we have these experienced players back we know how to get on to the ball. They beat us last time and that was in our heads because we didn't want to lose today," he added, referring to Spurs' 2-1 home loss to Ipswich earlier this season.

Postecoglou was delighted to have the Wales international's scoring touch back, especially with the club's main striker Dominic Solanke still out injured.

"We were always a threat. Sonny [Son Heung-Min] was unplayable in that first half [and] so great to get Brennan back. He scores so many goals for us in those areas.

"He knows when to arrive at the right time. He's really clinical. He has missed a lot of football. From our perspective, these last two weeks have given us a breather and reset our football. I'm pleased the boys have embraced it."

Tottenham Hotspur winger Brennan Johnson scored twice in the first half before goals from Djed Spence and Dejan Kulusevski wrapped up a 4-1 victory at relegation-threatened Ipswich Town in the Premier League on Saturday.

Johnson's double came after the hosts had twice threatened to open the scoring early on through Liam Delap, whose glancing header hit the post. Ipswich forward Omari Hutchinson got one back before halftime but Spurs were not to be denied.

The home side battled hard for an equaliser but never created any clear openings in the second half and Spurs went further ahead with a deflected Spence shot after 77 minutes and a fine individual goal from Kulusevski in the 84th minute.

The win left Spurs in 12th spot with 33 points from 26 games, while Ipswich remained third from bottom on 17, five points adrift of the safety zone after fellow strugglers Wolverhampton Wanderers won 1-0 at high-flying Bournemouth.

"So great to get Brennan back. He scores so many goals for us in those areas," said Ange Postecoglou, whose side have won three league games in a row for the first time since December 2023 after beating Brentford and Manchester United.

Ipswich had enjoyed a blistering start with striker Delap coming close with a shot across goal that was just wide of the far post and then with a deft header that hit the woodwork after he outjumped the defence to meet a Kalvin Phillips free kick.

But after surviving the early pressure Spurs took the lead through Johnson in the 18th minute. The Wales international tapped the ball home after a fine cross from Son Heung-Min, who outfoxed Ben Godfrey down the left and played a ball into the six-yard box.

Johnson got his second goal eight minutes later after a similar break from Son, although this time the Spurs captain cut back inside and delivered a precise pass across the area for Johnson to pick his spot past helpless goalkeeper Alex Palmer.

Ipswich responded when Hutchinson swept a left-foot shot into the far corner of Guglielmo Vicario's net in the 36th minute after Spurs defender Kevin Danso lost possession and Phillips found Jack Clarke down the left to cut the ball back.

Ipswich battled hard for an equaliser after the break but never created any clear openings and Tottenham wrapped up the points with a deflected Spence shot after he was set up following some trickery by James Maddison inside the box.

Kulusevski then ran down the right before cutting inside and firing a low shot into the far corner to seal the win. The home fans were upset as they thought play should have stopped after Jacob Greaves clashed heads with Spurs' Dane Scarlett.

"I always felt we were a threat when we had the ball," Postecoglou told a news conference.

"Our goals were quality. Our front-third play was super exciting and clinical. We're getting some players back [from injury] which was helpful."

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS in talks to end Tottenham sponsorship

Manchester United's co-owners INEOS are in talks with Tottenham Hotspur to end their sponsorship agreement with the club earlier than planned, sources have told ESPN.

The petrochemicals giant - which owns 28.9% of United - signed a five-year deal with Spurs in 2022 to promote a 4x4 Grenadier car with the company's logo featured prominently at Tottenham's stadium during matches, including when Ruben Amorim's side lost 1-0 in north London on Sunday.

However, sources have told ESPN that amicable discussions are taking place with a view to ending the multi-million-pound agreement as INEOS continue to scale back their involvement in various sports.

New Zealand Rugby confirmed last week that they were taking legal action against INEOS after they exited a £3.7 million-a-year sponsorship deal which is not due to end until 2027. INEOS cited the "deindustrialisation of Europe" as one reason for their decision to end the All Blacks agreement.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's company have also ended a partnership with Sir Ben Ainslie's America's Cup team with INEOS planning to compete under their own Britannia name.

Ainslie said in response that he was "astounded" by INEOS' plans. It has also been reported by the Daily Telegraph that INEOS were close to splitting with Mercedes' Formula 1 team last year after fraught sponsorship negotiations.

INEOS will mark one year of their association with United on Thursday and sources say they are considering further redundancies at the club to reduce costs.

The club's quarterly accounts for the final three months of 2024, released on Wednesday, revealed their operating profit had dipped from £27.5m to just £3m compared to the same period in the previous year.

Ruben Amorim on Man United job cuts: We take responsibility

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Ruben Amorim has said he and the first team "cannot ignore" job cuts at Manchester United and that it is their "responsibility" to improve results to help staff and prevent ticket price hikes.

United made 250 employees redundant over the summer as part of cost-cutting measures from part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, and sources have told ESPN that they are considering making further cuts.

The Premier League giants have reported losses of £300m over the last three years and their financial situation has not been helped by on-pitch performance, with United failing to make the Champions League places last season. This year, under Erik ten Hag and now Amorim, has been even worse and the club are languishing in 14th in the league ahead of Sunday's game against Tottenham Hotspur.

Amorim has acknowledged that he, and his players, must shoulder the blame.

"I think it's really important for us in the first team, coaches and players, to not ignore that," Amorim said of the job losses.

"People are losing their jobs so we have to acknowledge that the biggest problem is the football team. We spend the money. We are not winning. We are not in the Champions League so the revenues are not the same. We spent a lot of money in the past and now we have to be careful with the finances so cannot rebuild the team the way we would like.

"People are losing their jobs and, of course, have that feeling of not being safe in their job. It's hard to have that feeling so it affects the environment. We cannot ignore it, we acknowledge that problem.

"I want to say the responsibility is the first team and we have to change that."

Other cost-cutting measures introduced under Ratcliffe include raising ticket prices in an effort to increase revenues, and Amorim added: "To change that, the first thing we should do is win at Tottenham. That is a small step to try to help these people, to try to not push prices of tickets higher. We are responsible for that."

In January, the club wrote to fan groups to explain what they called "difficult choices."

"If we do not act now, we are in danger of failing to comply with PSR/FFP requirements," United said in the letter.

"We are currently making a significant loss each year totalling over £300m in the past three years. This is not sustainable.

"We will have to make some difficult choices. That has included a significant reduction to our workforce as well as cuts across many areas of spend across our club."

Description

Arsenal thrashed north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur 5-0 on Sunday to boost their slim Women's Super League title hopes, in a game where Chloe Kelly made her return and Alessia Russo shone.

The hosts were quick to find cracks in Spurs' defense at the Emirates Stadium and went 1-0 up in the 14th minute after a Kyra Cooney-Cross cross found Russo, who got a slight touch before Clare Hunt turned into her own net.

Mariona Caldentey then found the bottom corner in the 35th minute from 14 yards out despite Spurs goalkeeper Lize Kop's best efforts.

Tottenham's defensive woes were clear to see and they persisted into the second half, and six minutes after the restart Frida Maanum's deflected effort from the edge of the area ended in the back of the net.

The visitors then left themselves open chasing the game, with Caitlin Foord having plenty of space to run into on a counter in the 58th minute before assisting Russo, who made no mistake from the right-side of the box and capped her player of the match performance.

Just as Spurs thought it couldn't get any worse, Arsenal defender Emily Fox netted her first WSL goal with a stellar shot from 25 yards out.

On-loan Kelly, making her first appearance for Arsenal in 2,815 days, nearly topped off a perfect day for Arsenal but hit the crossbar.

The win means Arsenal are eight points off WSL leaders Chelsea in third, while Spurs sit sixth with 17 points.

"It felt amazing in front of unbelievable support today," Kelly said.

"Since I stepped into this club, I have felt a warm welcome. And what a game to do it in the North London derby.

"I felt myself on the pitch today. It's been an easy transition for me. It's been easy to walk into this dressing room with unbelievable players and the staff."

"Competition for all positions is important. Going up against the best players in my position is really important for me. The challenge is always there and I am ready to fight for my shift and I am ready to do so."

Man United 'bigger' than Tottenham; more pressure

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Ruben Amorim has said he is under more pressure at Manchester United than Ange Postecoglou is facing at Tottenham Hotspur because he works for "a bigger club."

With United and Spurs 13th and 14th in the Premier League table, both managers are under intense scrutiny. But ahead of their meeting on Sunday, Amorim has insisted he is under greater pressure because of the intense spotlight at Old Trafford.

"I'm a huge fan of Ange Postecoglou," Amorim said.

"I can understand the connection between me and Ange, we have the same problems. With all due respect I am in a bigger club with bigger pressure."

Amorim has only managed to win four of his 13 league games in charge since taking over from Erik ten Hag in November.

Meanwhile, Postecoglou has overseen just four league victories since the start of November and last week saw his team dumped out of both domestic cup competitions in the space of four days.

"He's a good guy," Amorim said.

"A very good coach, He wants to play football the right way. We know when we choose this kind of profession it's a good thing, but then you have to feel that pressure when you don't win.

"Every game until the end of the season is a big game for us, we need to win no matter what, we need to win and to improve the way we play football."

Amorim is hoping United bounce back quickly for their last Premier League outing which saw them lose 2-0 to Crystal Palace.

However, the Portuguese coach has selection problems after suffering new issues in training this week.

"It was a good week until two days ago," Amorim said.

"We had some problems. We don't have players back, we have one or two issues but we are waiting. We have one player who is sick so we will see the team at the weekend."

Ruben Amorim will succeed at Man United if he gets time

Description

Ange Postecoglou has said Ruben Amorim will succeed at Manchester United if he is given two years to work at Old Trafford.

Since joining United from Sporting CP in November, only five teams have won fewer Premier League points and he has won just nine of his 20 matches in charge in regulation time.

United have lost seven of their last 11 league games and are 13th ahead of Sunday's trip to Tottenham Hotspur, who lie in 14th place with Postecoglou also under mounting pressure over his position.

"I've got respect for all managers because I know how tough it is," Postecoglou said on Friday.

"I'm sure if you asked Ruben that he would say he was just doing what he was brought in to do. Obviously they've scouted him, they've identified him, the way he plays, the way he goes about his business. You don't just make these appointments because you like the look of someone. You do actually a lot of work and you bring him in with a purpose.

"Now, if anyone believes that anything can change significantly in a short space of time, they're living in an alternative universe that is not based on reality. I'm sure -- who am I to advise anybody -- but if Man United stuck with Ruben for the next two years, they'd see progress, absolutely, because that's how long it takes.

"And if someone can show me somebody who has done it quicker without significant investment, by all means put it across my desk and I'll follow that blueprint. But we know there's a blueprint there.

"I'm sure irrespective of the noise -- I've only literally spoken to Ruben for probably 30 seconds at a game -- I'm sure he's there going: 'I'm going to do what I was brought into do' and that's what he should do."

Speaking at the same time in Manchester, Amorim acknowledged the similarities of two principled managers coming under scrutiny amid calls for a change of approach.

"I am a huge fan of Ange Postecoglou," Amorim said. "He is a good guy, a very good coach. I understand the connection with me and Ange. We have the same problem. In my opinion, and with respect, I am at a bigger club, with bigger pressure, and I think coaches must follow their principles.

"He wants to play football in the right way and that's a good thing. We know when we choose this profession. there are a lot of good things, but you have to feel the pressure when you don't win."

Postecoglou will welcome back goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, midfielder James Maddison, and defender Destiny Udogie to his squad as Spurs look to reverse a run of eight defeats from 11 league games which the 59-year-old admitted had taken a toll on him.

"I've been grumpy? Fair enough, too. I've had to do this [speak to media] three times a week, sometimes on zero sleep. Cut me a little bit of slack. I can't be bubbly and cheery all the time.

"Fair to say I appreciated the fact there wasn't a game this week, for sure. I had dinner with my family last night and my boy said 'it seems like you haven't had a game for a while, Dad' It's only been four days but that's the cycle we've all been in, not just me, all the coaches. When you are going at it all the time, you do get into this cycle where it does become a bit of a grind. But you know you have to do it, there is no alternative. I can't not do things that I'm responsible for.

"Having the opportunity of even this, not having to front up two or three times and answer the same kind of questions allows you to take a breath and hopefully I'm back to whatever I was before."

Ahead of key Arsenal derby, are Spurs regressing in WSL?

Description

LONDON -- Tottenham Hotspur have endured an inconsistent and, at times, frustrating season. Despite sitting sixth in the Women's Super League (WSL) table, two points ahead of Liverpool and one behind Brighton, their performances have been far less convincing than last term and they are 10 points adrift of local rivals, and this weekend's opponents, Arsenal.

A sixth-place finish and FA Cup final appearance had set high expectations for 2024-25, with hopes that the club would continue their upward trajectory to break into the top four. However, their form and overall performances have noticeably dipped, and they have fallen victim to the all-too-common "second-season syndrome." While their position in the league remains stable, they are a staggering 20 points off leaders Chelsea (who have only dropped two all season.)

After finishing fifth in the Premier League in 2023-24, there were similar hopes for the men's team. But Ange Postecoglou's position as head coach appears increasingly uncertain following a disappointing run of 13 losses from 24 games and an ongoing injury crisis that has them 14th in the table.

Perhaps influenced by what's been going on around him at the club, women's boss Robert Vilahamn has been preaching caution when it comes to laying down expectations. "We are a top-six side, but we're not a top-four team," he said recently. "You need to remind yourself that if you think that you're going to dominate the possession and goal chances against the best teams in the league, we are not there yet."

With their FA Cup campaign already cut short after a 2-0 defeat to Everton, Spurs no longer have the luxury of a successful cup run to offset any shortcomings in the WSL and their hopes of improving on last season will rely on them securing points against lower-table opposition. Five out of their remaining nine games come against those clubs and consistency is crucial, especially as their tendency to squander early leads has cost them valuable points.

So what has gone wrong for a team that were expected to push further up the table this season? Can they find solutions, or will they fail to capitalise on the momentum of last year?

Gaps in attack

Spurs suffered a couple of significant setbacks in the summer transfer window as they lost two of their most influential attacking threats. Grace Clinton, who had been a key creative force last season, returned to Manchester United after her loan, while the dynamic and pacey Celin Bizet followed her to Leigh Sports Village on a permanent deal. The duo had played a crucial role in Spurs' attacking output, and their departures left a void that Vilahamn has struggled to adequately fill.

In an attempt to reinforce the squad, Spurs brought in experienced Australia winger Hayley Raso and technically gifted midfielder Maite Oroz, though the latter has been sidelined for much of the season due to injury. But without Clinton and Bizet pulling the strings, Spurs' attack lacks the same fluidity and potency they had last season.

The club signed two midfielders, Josefine Rybrink and Olivia Holdt, in the January transfer window yet the duo have been unable to turn the tide. Spurs have scored just 19 goals this season from 13 games, which is half that managed by league leaders Chelsea (38).

While the team still boast decent attacking options in Martha Thomas, Jess Naz and Beth England, the trio often find themselves having to create chances without a consistent presence in the box to finish them. This lack of depth has made it difficult for Spurs to maintain their offensive threat, forcing them to rely heavily on individual moments of brilliance rather than a cohesive, well-structured attack.

As the season progresses, finding a solution to this imbalance will be crucial.

Defensive woes

Just like the men's team, Spurs' defensive struggles this season have been compounded by injuries, with key players ruled out for extended periods. Eveliina Summanen and Amy James-Turner are on the sidelines, while young defender Ella Morris has been absent for several weeks due to an MCL issue.

Despite the summer addition of Clare Hunt to bolster the backline, Spurs have found little defensive stability since the start of the season. Indeed, after 13 games they have conceded the second-highest number of goals in the league (26), only trailing bottom side Crystal Palace (35). Last season, Spurs conceded 36 across the entire campaign.

Vilahamn believes there have been improvements since the start of the season, giving hope to their chances of bettering their sixth-place finish last season. "I saw the bravery that I wanted to see today," he said after the 1-0 loss to Man United on Feb. 2. "We didn't concede more goals and lose 4-0 or 3-0 as we did at the start of the season [and in last season's FA Cup final at Wembley]. You need to look at the positives as well."

Although Spurs' previous campaign was widely regarded as a success, this season presents a different challenge. If they manage to secure another sixth-place finish but with worse goal margins and defensive statistics, it raises the question of how success should be measured. Without improvements at both ends of the pitch, their current trajectory suggests it could be seen as a year of regression rather than progress.

Gulf with top-four teams still too big

Spurs are one of the many WSL clubs struggling to keep pace with the financial might of the traditional top four: Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City. These powerhouse teams have leveraged their substantial budgets to build world-class squads, widening the gap between themselves and the rest of the league.

Chelsea, in particular, have flexed their financial muscles, breaking the world transfer record twice in the past year and making history in January with the first-ever $1 million signing in the women's game: USWNT defender Naomi Girma. Clubs like Spurs, who operate on a far more limited budget, are left trailing behind in the market.

While the club have worked efficiently to maximise their spending -- bringing in Holdt, Rybrink and Leicester goalkeeper Lize Kop last month -- they simply can't compete with the financial firepower of the top clubs. And this translates to results on the pitch.

This season, Spurs have failed to beat any of the five teams currently ahead of them in the WSL table, with their best result being a 1-1 draw against fifth-placed Brighton. They have been comprehensively outclassed against the top four, losing heavily to Chelsea (5-2), Man City (4-0), Arsenal (3-0) and Man United (3-0). It would be no surprise if Arsenal were to beat them comfortably again at the Emirates this weekend.

"If you expect us to win against the top teams, it's too early to expect that," Vilahamn said. "You should have hope for it, you should aim for it, and we should try to do it. But if we don't succeed with individual details and tactical details, we lose those games because those squads are much stronger than ours right now. The board knows that. They know what we're doing, they know how much we're going to invest every year to grow organically."

Tottenham vs Manchester United: Time, how to watch, stats, team news

Description

Tottenham Hotspur host Manchester United in the Premier League after contrasting fortunes in domestic cup competitions, hoping for a much-needed boost in the League. Ange Postecoglou's side were knocked out of the Carabao Cup in the semifinal by Liverpool and the FA Cup by Aston Villa in their two most recent games, with the Tottenham manager defending his injury-ridden squad.

As for Manchester United, they bounced back from the a 0-2 defeat at home to Crystal Palace in the league with a last-gasp 2-1 win over Leicester in the FA Cup fourth round. Ruben Amorim's side are thirteenth in the Premier League table, two points above Tottenham, as both teams look to get their respective seasons on track.

The two sides last met in December in the Carabao Cup quarterfinal - where Tottenham edged a topsy-turvy contest by a 4-3 scoreline. Their last meeting in the league saw Postecoglou fashion a 3-0 win at Old Trafford against Erik Ten Hag's Manchester United.

Amorim has had a mixed start to life as Manchester United manager, losing eight and winning ten of his 20 matches in charge so far, but the FA Cup win over Leicester brought some relief. There was no such relief for Postecoglou, as elimination from domestic cup competitions has only served to raise further questions over his future. A win over Manchester United would provide some succour, although given Tottenham's lengthy injury-list, that seems a tall ask.

With the idea of relegation now far-fetched, the best that both clubs can aim for in the league is an outside chance at the European spots, which would require them to put together a winning run.
