Ange Postecoglou understands Tamworth's replay frustration

Ange Postecoglou was pleased with Tottenham Hotspur's eventual 3-0 extra-time win over Tamworth in the FA Cup third round on Sunday, but understands why some are frustrated that despite the non-league side holding his Premier League giants after 90 minutes, the new format of the tournament has prevented Tamworth from having a money-spinning replay.

National League side Tamworth held Spurs to 0-0 after 90 minutes, but were eventually undone in extra time as a Nathan Tshikuna own goal and strikes from Dejan Kulusevski and Brennan Johnson saw Postecoglou's side book their spot in the fourth round.

This year for the first time, replays for this stage of the competition have been scrapped. Had Tamworth held Spurs to a 0-0 draw this time last year, then they would have earned a replay in north London, a fixture which would have given the non-league club a cash windfall. But it was extra-time that did for Tamworth.

Postecoglou said he understood why some argue replays remain essential, but also said he can see the benefits of making this a one-match tie that cut the number of matches his side are involved in over the season.

"I get the sentiment but at the same time I have been banging on about less games so it is a balancing act," Postecoglou said. "The way the calendar is at the moment it would be almost impossible for us to fit another game in. We are already struggling to fit it all in. I understand the sentiment around it and I certainly believe in the competition and what it does offer every part of the football pyramid and I think it should be protected."

Postecoglou introduced Son Heung-Min and Kulusevski at the start of extra-time, and ultimately, those replacements swung the match in Spurs' favour.

"Firstly credit to Tamworth, I thought they gave everything and gave a really good account of themselves. We knew it would be a challenging afternoon for us with the surface making it really difficult for us to play in the manner we wanted to," Postecoglou said.

"It is easy to get frustrated on days like this but the lads kept their heads clear and calm and persisted and eventually overpowered them.

"I'm sure all Tamworth will remember the day. As they should because their team played really well and we will remember it too because it's a unique experience for us in terms of the kind of challenge we had today. I enjoyed it. It was a good day."

Postecoglou was also impressed by Mikey Moore's showing.

"Yeah brilliant, great to get him some game time," Postecoglou said. "I think he's itching to get back as well. He's missed a fair bit of football. It just adds another attacking threat to us and I'm sure after today he'll feel a lot better. As I said, I think he was a bit rusty at the start but he definitely grew into the game."

For Tamworth, their dream FA Cup run comes to an end. But manager Andy Peaks was proud of his side's efforts. "We almost created history there," Peaks said afterwards.

"They were disappointed at the end because I think they were that close to nicking a goal at the end and it would have made it 1-0 to us, but I said be proud. Whoever you had here, whether it be family members, work colleagues or whoever, they can look at that and be proud of the performance we put in. We were in the game for most of it and started really well. Ange just said to me I should be proud, so if he is telling me I should be proud, then why would I not be.

"When you look at the team they had, for us to compete with them for such a long time, I'm like wow. It is unbelievable. The players they had out there at the end, you look at the bench and who they are bringing on, it just speaks volumes for what we are all about and we made it so hard for them to play through us."

Spurs have been drawn to face fellow Premier League side Aston Villa in the fourth round.

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur suffered a concussion during the team's Carabao Cup semifinal win over Liverpool on Wednesday.

Bentancur collapsed on the pitch in the sixth minute of the contest before being taken off on a stretcher eight minutes later. He was immediately taken to hospital for tests afterwards.

The Uruguay international, 27, had tried to head a ball that had been curled in from a corner when the incident happened.

"Good news thankfully -- he was in hospital obviously and they did all the tests in terms of checking that everything is okay. And yeah, all good, he's back home and he's fine, feeling good," Postecoglou said in a video posted by Spurs on X.

"We'll obviously follow the protocols now, a couple of weeks where you've got to make sure everything is okay, but thankfully it looks like a concussion but nothing more than that."

The Australian coach praised his players for how they handled the incident.

"It was distressing and you saw, especially Pedro [Porro] who was the first one there and kind of knew it was a distressing situation," he said. "But I thought the lads handled it well and the medical team handled it well, and like I said thankfully all good."

Spurs travel to minnows Tamworth for their FA Cup third-round clash on Sunday. Tamworth play in the National League, the fifth tier of English football.

Spurs vs Liverpool: Virgil van Dijk angry at ref's decision

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has questioned the referee's decision to not hand Tottenham Hotspur's Lucas Bergvall a second yellow card before the 18-year-old scored the winning goal in the Carabao Cup semifinal between the sides.

Stuart Attwell, the official in charge of the game, had earlier booked Bergvall for a foul on Luis Díaz and played advantage after another late tackle from the Swede on Kostas Tsimikas.

As Liverpool's attack petered out, Attwell did not stop play to show a yellow card to Bergvall and moments later the teenager slotted past Alisson after fine work from Dominic Solanke while Tsimikas was off the pitch receiving treatment.

"It was quite obvious there was gonna be a second yellow," Van Dijk told Sky Sports after the game.

"It was pretty clear, and then a minute later he scores the winner. Listen, it is what it is. [The referee] made a mistake in my opinion and I told him that. He thinks he didn't. It was quite obvious and everyone on the sideline knew it.

"There's a linesman there, there's a fourth official, there's VAR ... and he doesn't get a second yellow. I'm not saying this is the reason we lost, but it was a big moment in the game."

The Netherlands stalwart did add that Attwell's call wasn't the only reason Liverpool will head to Anfield to play the second leg facing a deficit.

"We played against an intense team with good attacking players who keep running and make it difficult," he said. "We created opportunities -- not really clear-cut chances in my opinion, but enough that we could have scored.

"At times we could have done better. That's part of football. At times we played through them nicely, but they were able to defend much better than when we were here a couple of weeks ago."

Arne Slot echoed Van Dijk's comments, saying: "The decision he [the referee] made had a lot of impact on the result tonight."

- Tottenham have discussed a move for PSG forward Randal Kolo Muani, who is expected to leave the French club this month, Ben Jacobs reports. The 26-year-old has struggled for form in Ligue 1 this season, scoring twice in 10 outings. PSG are open to letting Kolo Muani leave on loan but would prefer a permanent exit if the right opportunity is presented to them. Several clubs around Europe are reportedly interested in signing the France international, including AC Milan, Juventus, Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and Aston Villa. Spurs, meanwhile, are yet to make an official approach.

- Galatasaray are "100% convinced" that Victor Osimhen will not leave the club in the coming weeks, according to Sky Sports Deutschland's Florian Plettenberg. The Nigeria international, who is on loan at the Turkish club from Napoli, has been heavily linked with Manchester United in recent weeks. However, negotiations are yet to take place with other clubs regarding a potential winter move. Osimhen, 26, has impressed for Galatasaray this season, scoring 10 goals in 12 league games.

- Liverpool are open to offers for Darwin Núñez and could accept bids in excess of £50 million for the striker this month, Football Insider has revealed. Speculation has continued to mount over the Uruguayan's immediate future, with AC Milan and Newcastle United both being linked with moves in recent weeks. The transfer fee would allow Liverpool to make back a large percentage of the sum they spent to bring him in 2½ years ago. Núñez has found goals hard to come by this season, having failed to score in the Premier League since early November.

- West Ham United have drawn up a list of winter forward targets which includes Brighton & Hove Albion youngster Evan Ferguson and Wolverhampton Wanderers' Hwang Hee-Chan, The Daily Telegraph reports. While a loan move is more likely this month, a permanent signing could be made if funds can be generated through player exits.

- AC Milan are the latest club to shown an interest in Marcus Rashford, who appears to be on his way out at Manchester United, reports the Daily Mail. United are looking for a transfer fee of £40m but the player's £325,000-a-week salary is an issue, so a loan with an obligation to sign permanently would be considered. Clubs in Saudi Arabia have sounded him out, though he would prefer a move to Spain. Napoli have now been joined by AC Milan as Italian clubs would could make a move before the end of the month.

OTHER RUMORS

- Promotion contenders Sheffield United are set to re-sign Ben Brereton Díaz on loan after reaching a verbal agreement with Southampton. Tottenham Hotspur have signed goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky from Slavia Prague on a deal until 2031, the Premier League club confirmed on Sunday.

The 21-year-old's move to Spurs is subject to receiving a work permit and international clearance.

Kinsky's signing adds to manager Ange Postecoglou's options in goal, with first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after surgery on a broken ankle in November.

Postecoglou has had to deal with a host of injuries to key players in recent weeks. An illness also swept through the squad this week, with the manager confirming he had just 11 fit players available as of Thursday ahead of their 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday.

Second-choice goalkeeper Fraser Forster was one of those to miss the match against Newcastle with illness, with Brandon Austin making his club debut.

Thomas Tuchel's first scouting mission as England's head coach will be watching Tottenham's clash against Newcastle United on Saturday, the FA have confirmed.

The German manager officially took over as Gareth Southgate's permanent successor on Jan. 1 and, while his first games in charge aren't until the end of March, he isn't hanging around before casting an eye on some of his potential charges in action.

He will be at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for Saturday's early Premier League kick-off as Spurs host in-form Newcastle, with England hopefuls Dominic Solanke, James Maddison, Anthony Gordon, Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall all expected to play a part.

Tuchel, formerly Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain boss, has also added three more members to his backroom staff as he begins his first spell as a national team coach.

Joining assistant coach Anthony Barry, who was confirmed in October, will be Hilario, Nicolas Mayer and James Melbourne.

Hilario, as previously reported by ESPN, joins from Chelsea, where Tuchel worked with him as a goalkeeping coach. The Portuguese trainer made 20 Premier League appearances in goal for Chelsea before becoming a coach, but has ended an 18-year association with the club to work with the national team.

Melbourne, an analyst, also joins from Chelsea, while Mayer is a performance coach who worked with Tuchel at PSG and Bayern.

Lee Carsley, who took over England on an interim basis across the autumn, has returned to his role with the under-21s with his staff.

Both Tottenham and Newcastle United are reported to be watching the 29-year-old's situation, with belief that he could be tempted away from the Etihad Stadium amid a difficult spell of form for the Citizens. - Three clubs are in the race for AC Milan centre-back Fikayo Tomori, reports Calciomercato. Juventus are believed to have begun negotiations with the Rossoneri over a potential loan deal for the 27-year-old that would include an obligation to be made permanent, though they face competition from the Premier League with both West Ham United and Brighton & Hove Albion interested in his services. Tomori arrived at the San Siro from Chelsea in the summer of 2021.

The agreement is reported to be worth £1 million plus add-ons, with the 18-year-old set to undergo a medical ahead of his proposed switch to the Vitality Stadium. Akinmboni currently stars for the U.S. under-20 side, and was named on the bench in the 2-1 win over France in November.

Ange Postecoglou: Threadbare Tottenham had to use injured Radu Dragusin

Tottenham Hotspur's injury crisis meant manager Ange Postecoglou said he was forced to field Radu Dragusin against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday despite the defender struggling with an ankle knock.

Speaking after his side's 2-2 draw in the Premier League, Postecoglou painted a grim picture of the club's plight with left-back Destiny Udogie the latest casualty.

"Well we had no choice, if Radu doesn't play, I don't know who plays. He wasn't 100%, but he felt he could get through with his ankle," Postecoglou told reporters.

Dragusin, who suffered an injury against Nottingham Forest on Thursday, is currently the only available centre-back at the club with Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Ben Davies all injured and still weeks away from a return.

"There's no choice, but it's not a risk. I mean it's a judgment call. It's not like it's a muscle injury, it's a knock on his ankle, but yeah, we're making decisions," said Postecoglou, whose side are down in 11th place.

"We've got no choice unless I throw another 18 or 17-year-old out there. That's the only fit players we have."

Tottenham are also missing the likes of striker Richarlison, winger Wilson Odobert and first-choice keeper Guglielmo Vicario and will be without midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur for next weekend's home clash with Newcastle United after he picked up a fifth booking of the season to trigger a one-game ban.

Udogie also went off in the 50th minute with a muscular injury, adding to Postecoglou's woes.

"I think it was a hamstring. Again, we've been relying on a core group of players because we just haven't had the ability to rotate so at some point it was going to catch up with us. Unfortunately it caught up with Destiny," Postecoglou said.

Tottenham have now won only once in their last seven Premier League games and will finish a year lower than seventh for the first time since the 2008-09 season.

They conceded early against Wolves -- the 15th time this year they have fallen behind at home in a Premier League game. But goals by Rodrigo Bentancur and Brennan Johnson got them ahead by halftime, only for Norwegian substitute Jørgen Strand Larsen's late effort to deny them a much-needed win.

"It's a disappointing outcome. Obviously we went a goal down but after that I felt we controlled the game. It wasn't easy always to get openings but we did look pretty threatening every time we did get forward," Postecoglou said.

3 Tottenham (22 Dec, 2024) Game Analysis

Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to four points with a dominant but chaotic 6-3 win at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday thanks to doubles from Luis Díaz and Mohamed Salah.

Díaz met Trent Alexander-Arnold's beautiful cross with a diving header to open the scoring before Alexis Mac Allister nodded home from close range to double Liverpool's lead.

James Maddison pulled one back four minutes before half-time after Mac Allister was dispossessed in midfield by Dejan Kulusevski to give the hosts a route back into the contest.

But Dominik Szoboszlai scored in first half added time to restore the Reds' two-goal lead and give Spurs a mountain to climb.

Salah netted twice in seven second-half minutes, passing Liverpool great Billy Liddell on the club's all-time scoring list with his 14th and 15th league goals of the season, to make it 5-1 and send some Spurs fans heading to the exits.

"I'm happy and proud, I'll just keep working hard," Liverpool's now fourth most prolific scorer, said

Kulusevski's volley was followed by Dominic Solanke's 83rd-minute goal to give Spurs hope of an unlikely comeback, before Díaz made it 6-3 two minutes later to finish a madcap contest that could have had even more goals.

"We were quite good up front but defensively we need to improve as a team," Salah told Sky Sports. "It's quite good the result, and hopefully we just keep going."

Liverpool are top with 39 points from 16 games, four points above second-placed Chelsea who have played a game more. Spurs remain 11th, with 23 points from 17 games.

Arne Slot's team constantly threatened in attack and Salah ought to have put them ahead inside three minutes when Spurs goalkeeper Fraser Forster, who made two costly errors in midweek, passed straight to him in the box, but Salah dragged his shot wide.

Salah then hit the bar after beating three defenders with some silky footwork, but the visitors deservedly took the lead in the 23rd minute with Díaz heading home at full stretch.

A second looked an inevitability and it came in the 36th minute after Andy Robertson's cross to Szoboszlai bounced kindly for Mac Allister, who nodded past the onrushing Forster.

Mac Allister was at fault for Spurs' first goal, however, which came out of nowhere and ought to have given Spurs a platform to drag themselves back into it.

But Szoboszlai made it 3-1, running onto Salah's through ball and nutmegging Forster at the end of a sweeping move.

Salah got in on the act after the break, tapping home from close range in the 54th minute and then adding another shortly after when Szoboszlai laid it on a plate.

Liverpool showed no signs of sitting back, with Forster forced into a good save to deny Alexander-Arnold, before Kulusevski and then Solanke raised the prospect of a remarkable comeback.

But Díaz placed a clinical finish past Forster with five minutes of normal time remaining to end a breathless encounter, which fell two goals short of equalling a Premier League record.
