Aston Villa progressed to the FA Cup fifth round with a 2-1 victory over Tottenham as pressure mounted on beleaguered Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou.

Marcus Rashford made his debut as a second-half substitute following his loan move from Manchester United last week as goals from Jacob Ramsey and Morgan Rogers sent Villa through to the fifth round for the first time in a decade.

It completed a miserable four days for Spurs, who followed up Thursday's Carabao Cup exit to Liverpool by going out of another cup competition despite a late consolation from Mathys Tel.

Postecoglu's chances of delivering his promised second-season silverware are now restricted to the Europa League, but whether he will still be in charge when they play in next month's last 16 remains to be seen.

They were outplayed at Villa Park and up against it from the moment they fell behind with just 57 seconds on the clock.

Villa were last in this round of the FA Cup in the 2014-15 season when they reached the final and they will be fancying a repeat run this season after a weekend where Chelsea and Liverpool both went out.

It was a disastrous start for Spurs as Villa went ahead in the opening minute as they cut through the visitors' defence as though they were not there.

They beat the press in the left-back position, Rogers danced past Lucas Bergvall and slipped in Ramsey, whose shot went straight through Antonin Kinsky's hands and into the back of the net.

The blunderous goalkeeper then set up another chance for Villa as a wayward pass led to a turnover of possession and Donyell Malen fizzed an effort just over.

It was one-way traffic as Spurs were completely overrun in midfield, with Youri Tielemans and Ramsey both missing the target with decent opportunities, while Kinsky did make amends with a stretching save to deny Leon Bailey.

Spurs could easily have been 3-0 down, but they then missed a golden chance to equalise in the 24th minute.

Dejan Kulusevski set Mikey Moore free down the right and he put his cross on a plate for Son Heung-min, but the South Korean was denied by a brilliant save by Emiliano Martinez, who flung himself across goal to make a block.

Villa had another swarming attack soon after as Bailey brought another good save out of Kinsky with Ramsey hitting the follow-up into the outside of the post.

The second half saw an immediate improvement from Spurs, who replaced 17-year-old Mikey Moore with Yves Bissouma, and there was a sustained spell of pressure.

But that made them vulnerable on the counter attack and it should have been 2-0 just before the hour.

John McGinn advanced into the space and played in Ramsey, but this time Kinsky made an important save.

There was no stopping Villa, though, and they did double their advantage in the 64th minute.

Another surge forward saw Bailey tee up Malan, whose ball across the face of goal was cleared straight into the path of Rogers to poke home from close range.

New signings Rashford and Marco Asensio were introduced immediately afterwards as Villa smelled blood.

Rogers drove wide after combining well with Asensio, while Ramsey fluffed another one-on-one opportunity as Kinsky blocked well.

Rashford, playing for the first time since December 12, was gunning for a debut goal and overran the ball when he closed in on goal.

Spurs made it a nervy final five minutes when deadline-day signing Tel opened his account by converting Kulusevski's cross, but they lost again.

Spurs bid to bounce back after Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool

Aston Villa's Jacob Ramsey struck inside the first minute and Morgan Rogers added a second-half goal to secure a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur and lift their side into the FA Cup fifth round for the first time in 10 years on Sunday at Villa Park.

Villa took 58 seconds to score when Rogers waltzed forward virtually unchallenged before sending the ball into Ramsey's path. The 23-year-old fired straight at Antonin Kinsky who got two hands on it but the ball slipped through them into the net.

Rogers doubled the home side's lead in the 64th minute when Pedro Porro could not clear Leon Bailey's cross and Rogers was there to slot home the loose ball from close range.

Spurs' new signing Frenchman Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich pulled one back in the 91st minute when he flicked home Dejan Kulusevski's cross but the hosts held out to claim the victory.

Premier League leaders Liverpool were dumped out of the FA Cup with a shock 1-0 loss at second-tier side Plymouth Argyle earlier on Sunday, while Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers beat Championship side Blackburn Rovers 2-0 away.

Spurs bid to bounce back after Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool

Tottenham are back in FA Cup action as they face Aston Villa in the fourth round. Spurs, who needed extra time to overcome non-League Tamworth in the last round, will be looking to bounce back after their Carabao Cup defeat at Liverpool on Thursday.

That defeat at Anfield turned up the pressure on Ange Postecoglou, whose hopes of salvaging a difficult season now rest on the FA Cup and the Europa League. Spurs do have a good recent record at Villa Park and won 4-0 there in the Premier League last season.

Aston Villa vs Tottenham latest news

Slot: Liverpool starting to make better use of Nunez

Arne Slot believes Liverpool are finally starting to get the best out of Darwin Nunez, having learned a more effective way to play with a number nine.

Nunez impressed with his work rate and all-round contribution in Thursday's win over Tottenham, despite not really having a genuine goal-scoring chance.

Nunez has alternated with Diogo Jota in the central attacking role, while winger Luis Diaz has been deployed as a false nine on a number of occasions.

Jota is likely to get the nod to start today but Nunez's progress offers hope he can still have a long-term future at the club and Slot thinks that is down to a greater understanding of what he wants from a striker.

"I think in general we used the number nine better and better than we maybe did in the beginning of the season," he said.

"That is the positive thing of playing more games, training more together and having more meetings together - you can highlight that a bit more as well.

"I think in the beginning of the season we were quite dependent on our wingers, but I see that we are starting to use our nine more and more in situations that we have to use him.

"As a result of that these players come in promising positions and they have just as much quality as our wingers.

"So, if you put Jota in a promising position or if Lucho (Diaz) plays there or Darwin. they will give you what we are all hoping for and that's goals and assists."

Postecoglou shutting out speculation over his future

Ange Postecoglou has said he is shutting out speculation about his Tottenham future.

Postecoglou knows talk over his job will intensify if Spurs exit a second competition in quick succession.

Asked if he would still be in charge if his side lost at Villa, Postecoglou replied: "Me personally? That doesn't enter my head space.

"I get that's obviously a massive topic of discussion because when things aren't going well you look at the person who's largely responsible for that and that's me. It is what it is.

"You've got to get on with it. It doesn't change the decisions I make, how I feel, how I work today or how determined I am to continue on this path.

"Right now the focus is on getting this group of players recovered for Sunday. It's a big game and hopefully a positive result and then over the next couple of weeks we'll get some significant players back, which I think will help."

Hayters

Tottenham have a strong recent record against Aston Villa.

In all competitions, Spurs have won nine of their last 10 away games at Villa Park and their last two wins came by the same 4-0 scoreline (April 2022 and March 2024).

Spurs lost against Manchester City in the fourth round of the FA Cup last season but they have progressed from four of their last five ties at this stage of the competition.

Tel thrown into the Tottenham deep end

With Richarlison injured again, new signing Mathys Tel is set to play a crucial role for Tottenham in the coming weeks.

Tel is in line to start an Anfield and will have no time to ease himself gently into life at Spurs.

And what does Richarlison’s latest injury mean for the Brazilian’s future?

Stakes are high for Spurs

It was not so much the result as the manner of Tottenham's performance at Anfield that was alarming for Ange Postecoglou.

As the head coach acknowledged, a "passive" Spurs sunk without a trace in a 4-0 defeat to Liverpool in their Carabao Cup semi-final decider on Thursday.

This was not like Spurs' 6-3 home defeat to Liverpool in December, which was shambolic but at least spirited, and even less their disciplined, feisty 1-0 win in last month's first leg in London. It was a surrender.

There would have been no shame in Spurs going down swinging against Arne Slot's league leaders, especially given the state of Postecoglou's depleted squad, but a limp exit without laying a glove on Liverpool is harder to justify, and further raises the stakes for Sunday's FA Cup fourth-round tie at Aston Villa.

Standard Sport prediction

Tottenham will be keen to bounce back after losing their Carabao Cup semi-final tie against Liverpool.

However, Spurs’ well documented injury woes make that task even harder against an Aston Villa side that have bolstered their attacking department with Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio.

The visitors do have a good record at Villa Park, but it’s difficult to see that continuing on Sunday evening.

Aston Villa to win 3-2

Early Aston Villa team news

Aston Villa will be without five first-team players for tomorrow’s game, including star striker Ollie Watkins.

The striker was forced off during the loss at Wolves last weekend with a groin injury, and replaced by January signing Donyell Malen.

Malen could again deputise up front, or Marcus Rashford is available to make his debut, with manager Unai Emery confirming Watkins has been unable to train.

“We are going to work tomorrow, but at the beginning, we have out, not available for Sunday, Tyrone Mings and Pau Torres, [Matty] Cash, Ross Barkley and Watkins," Emery told reporters on Friday.

“For [Watkins], each day is being important, how he is feeling, but for Sunday, I think he is not going to be available because today he didn’t train.

“Tomorrow, I think he is not going to train as well, because he will need more days to recover. Hopefully, for next week, he will be available.”

Early Tottenham team news

Tottenham’s injury woes have further worsened.

Spurs head to Villa Park for their fourth-round tie hoping to avoid exiting two domestic cups in four days, having lost 4-1 on aggregate in the Carabao Cup semi-final after Thursday’s 4-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

Richarlison’s injury, sustained against the Reds, means Spurs have 11 first-team absentees for the trip to Villa Park.

The 27-year-old striker was forced off in the first half with a calf injury and is the latest to succumb to injury, with Postecoglou revealing the Brazilian was “emotional” after his latest injury setback.

New signings Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel made their debuts in Thursday’s heavy defeat at Anfield and are available. Tel could be handed a first start given Postecoglou’s two main strikers, Solanke and Richarlison, are injured and youngster Dane Scarlett is cup-tied.

Mathys Tel is in line for his first Tottenham start in their FA Cup fourth-round tie against Aston Villa.

Richarlison is facing another spell out after suffering a calf injury in Thursday’s 4-0 Carabao Cup defeat at Liverpool.

With Dominic Solanke still a few weeks away from returning from his knee injury, Tel is set to lead the line for Spurs at Villa Park.

The on-loan Bayern Munich teenager can play anywhere across the frontline but it has been claimed in Germany that he sees himself as a central striker.

Spurs are still depleted by injuries and Micky van de Ven remains sidelined, so Kevin Danso is likely to continue alongside Ben Davies at centre-back.

Lucas Bergvall is pushing to come into midfield, while Pedro Porro is likely to be recalled after starting on the bench against Liverpool.

Guglielmo Vicario, Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie, James Maddison, Wilson Odobert and Brennan Johnson are still out, while Dane Scarlett is cup-tied.

Radu Dragusin has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a serious knee injury.

Premier League clubs already lining up moves for summer targets

Alex Young @ alexwsyoung17 minutes ago

Transfer news LIVE!

The truth over Arsenal's failed attempts to sign a striker have been revealed with RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel, AC Milan striker Alvaro Morata and Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins all of interest, and the Gunners have been tipped to spend heavily in the summer.

Chelsea are expected to do the same, with their two priorities over the summer being a new winger and a new striker. An enquiry for Alejandro Garnacho was made in January, but it remains to be seen if the Blues will go back in for the Argentine at the end of the season. Tottenham want Marc Guehi, but Chelsea are confident they will win that race.

Manchester United have been tipped to make a move for Xavi Simons, despite the player just last month joining RB Leipzig on a permanent deal. The midfielder's short contract has prompted speculation that Leipzig could cash in, so one to keep an eye on in the coming months. Follow all the latest news, gossip and rumours below!

Latest transfer news and updates

Arsenal to spend big in the summer

After failing to secure a January signing, Arsenal are now expected to spend heavily in the summer.

The Mail reports that Arsenal believe the next window is ‘critical’ to finally winning a major trophy under Mikel Arteta.

Martin Zubimendi, who has a £52million release clause, looks certain to sign, with Jorginho and Thomas Partey leaving.

Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams and Wolves' Matheus Cunha are target for wide forwards, and big money will be spent on a new striker with Newcastle striker Alexander Isak the dream signing.

Benjamin Sesko, though, appears the more realistic striker addition thanks to his release clause.

Arsenal had FOUR striker targets in January

Arsenal explored deals for four strikers during January.

The Mail report that RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel, AC Milan striker Alvaro Morata and Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins were all discussed during the month.

One bid went in for Watkins, while Tel joined Tottenham on a loan-to-buy deal.

The report adds that Arsenal found that the best players just were not available with prices inflated or clubs unwilling to do business.

Chelsea confident of winning Marc Guehi race

Chelsea are confident Marc Guehi will join them over Tottenham this summer.

Spurs saw a £70m bid for the Crystal Palace defender rejected in the final days of the winter transfer window.

That was after Newcastle saw multiple bids rejected last summer.

But the Blues believe they will have enough pull to win the race for the England international.

Matheus Cunha release clause revealed

Matheus Cunha will be available for £62m this summer.

The Wolves striker was strongly linked with a move to Arsenal in the January window, but he will remain at his current club until at least the end of the season.

The Daily Mail report that Cunha’s latest contract has a £62m release clause in it, which could spark plenty of interest come the summer.

Harry Kane to Arsenal? Shock claim after release clause revealed

Arsenal legend Paul Merson claims he “wouldn’t be surprised” if England captain Harry Kane joined the Gunners.

Willian explains return to Fulham as free transfer made official

Fulham have confirmed Willian has returned to the club as a free agent.

A deal was agreed on deadline day, but there was no need for the move to be completed before Monday’s 11pm deadline as Willian had been without a club.

The 36-year-old left Olympiacos in December, just three months after he signed for the Greek club following the expiring of his contract at Fulham.

Willian has now secured a return to the Premier League and Craven Cottage, signing a contract until the end of the season. The Brazilian will wear the No.22 shirt.

Well, well, well.

Could Harry Kane soon be on the move again?

Viktor Gyokeres price tag update

Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres was one of the major names being linked with a move during the January transfer window, albeit he remained in the Portuguese capital.

Still, perhaps a move could become more realistic in the summer.

Chelsea interested in Daniel Munoz

Chelsea didn’t make any huge moves during January but all that could change come the summer time.

Daniel Munoz has so far impressed during his first year at Crystal Palace and could be in line for a short trip across London soon.

Newcastle waiting for the winners at Wembley

Matt Verrijust now

Liverpool have a deficit to overturn as they host Tottenham at Anfield tonight in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final. Lucas Bergvall’s first ever goal for Spurs proved the difference in the first leg, but Ange Postecoglou and his team still face an uphill task if they are to book their place in the Wembley final.

Liverpool are firm favourites to get the job done and maintain their bid to defend their Carabao Cup crown. Caoimhin Kelleher starts in goal tonight, with Conor Bradley and Curtis Jones also in the side. As for Spurs, the injury crisis is not improving. Radu Dragusin has been ruled out with an ACL injury, Micky van de Ven is a doubt and Cristian Romero has been ruled out. Kevin Danso therefore comes straight in for a debut, while Mathys Tel is on the bench.

The winner of this tie will face Newcastle in the final at Wembley, after the Magpies eased to a dominant 4-0 aggregate win over Arsenal to keep their hopes of ending a long trophy drought alive. GOOO.... OFFSIDE!

Szoboszlai has the ball in the net but the flag is up.

Salah with a wonderful pass through, it’s a cool finish from Szoboszlai but he was a yard or two off.

Liverpool 0-0 Tottenham (agg 0-1)

Salah allowed to cut inside onto his left foot on the edge of the box.

Corner taken short, all the way back to the halfway line. Dreadful.

Swung into the near post, Danso tries to get across his man but can’t make contact.

And now Liverpool break, Spence can’t get there this time. Szoboszlai is a better touch away from being in.

Spurs have got through the first 20 minutes, though not without some really jittery moments and a cut head for Ben Davies.

Kevin Danso has started well and got his body in the way of a couple of shots.

Liverpool 0-0 Tottenham (agg 0-1)

Bradley eventually swings a cross in, Gray stays alert and flicks a header behind for a corner, with Robertson lurking behind him.

Liverpool 0-0 Tottenham (agg 0-1)

Liverpool clear and threaten to break, Spence has to be alert to launch the ball back forward as the last man. Had about four red shirts charging towards him.

Chance for the visitors to break, Richarlison is by himself and slows down, desperately waiting to be fouled.

Premier League clubs lining up moves for summer targets

Alex Young @ alexwsyoung27 minutes ago

Transfer news – LIVE!

The January transfer window may well have closed now but all of the Premier League clubs keep being linked with major summer moves. So much has been made about Arsenal’s lack of firepower and the Gunners are being tipped to make a massive money offer to sign Inter Milan and Argentina forward Lautaro Martinez this summer.

Mikel Arteta’s side have also been widely tipped to sign Real Sociedad and Spain midfielder Martin Zubimendi, who is expected to join this summer. Still, with nothing yet signed, perhaps the door could be open for another huge club to try and hijack any move.

Chelsea – by their standards – had a relatively quiet time of things in January. However, the Blues are surely likely to spend again this summer and recent reports suggest they are now keen to sign Crystal Palace defender Daniel Munoz. Follow all the latest news, gossip and rumours below!

Arsenal’s pursuit of a new striker could take them to Inter Milan and Argentina star, Lautaro Martinez.

Tottenham to return for Tyler Dibling

Tottenham expected to reignite interest in Southampton's Tyler Dibling.

Spurs have held talks over the 18-year-old winger but were put off by the Saints' demands of an astronomical fee, well in excess of their reported £55million asking price.

Dibling will have two years remaining on his contract at St Mary’s in the summer, when Spurs could be among a number of clubs to reassess his situation, particularly if rock-bottom Saints are relegated from the Premier League.

Manchester United are interested in a move for Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz.

Mathys Tel will be a Tottenham player next season, says Ange Postecolgou

The loanee has already agreed terms on a six-year contract

Dan Kilpatrick @ Dan_KP1 minute ago

Ange Postecoglou says deadline-day signing Mathys Tel "will be a Tottenham player" next season, insisting: "I didn't bring him here for six months."

Tel joined Spurs from Bayern Munich on loan until the end of the campaign, with an option for the club to make the deal permanent for £45.7million in the summer.

The 19-year-old has indicated he is happy to stay long-term if Spurs trigger the option and already agreed terms on a six-year deal, though reports in Germany have claimed he could still choose to return to Bayern.

Asked if he was confident that Tel would stay put if Spurs take up their option, Postecoglou said: "He'll be a Tottenham player, mate. He'll be a Tottenham player.

Tottenham Hotspur FC

"I think he'll show everyone he's going to be a Tottenham player in the next six months. I didn't bring him here for six months.”

"I think he is very, very exciting," Postecoglou added. "When you meet him you realise he’s got that bit about him as a person who has enormous self-belief and confidence in what he can do and what he wants to do.

"Even though he’s young, physically he’s already in a place where he can take on the enormous challenges of being an attacking player in the Bundesliga and I think he can handle the Premier League. He’s a goal-scorer, he can take people on, he’s got speed. He is exciting.

"I’d be very surprised if there was a club that wouldn’t be interested in somebody like him.

"Irrespective of the situation we’re in, us being able to get him in and the circumstances behind it, is fantastic for the football club.

"He will play a significant part in our end of season and beyond. I know he wants to make an impact and I'd be expecting him to make an impact."

Spurs agreed a deal with Bayern for Tel towards the end of last week but the French forward spent time mulling over his future before agreeing to join Spurs with just hours until Monday's 11pm deadline.

Postecoglou spoke to the teenager on the phone and the pair exchanged messages "over a couple of hours", which was key to Tel's decision.

"I got a sense pretty early on that there was a connection there and he was hearing what he wanted to hear," Postecoglou said of their conversation.

"It is a big decision. He is a 19-year-old man at a fantastic football club. They [Bayern] would have been quite happy to keep him, I am sure, but he also knew he needed to play. But not just play. Play where he is going to develop.

Getty Images

"It is a credit to him that rather than just jump at what came at him, he was very thorough in the way he made his decision.

"I think I’ve got a pretty compelling story to tell," Postecoglou added, when pushed to explain his his powers of persuasion.

"When I speak to players, I’m not trying to sell anything that there isn’t plenty of evidence for. I think for most players, that’s where they get comfort more than anything else. I don’t think it’s smooth-talking, or selling, I think there’s a real good story here which I really believe in.

"I speak from a real strong conviction that what I’m saying will come to fruition. I really believe that. I don’t think I need to do anything special."

Postecoglou admitted that he did not have a "100 hit rate" at winning over players and revealed there were "a couple" of conversations in January which did not work out.

He continued: "I get comfort from that too, when I walk away and think, ‘Jesus, he’s a good player but I don’t think it’s going to be a good fit’.

"It’s not going to be a good fit for him, it’s not going to be a good fit for us, so it works out well either way.

"There are red flags. I am 59 years old and...with age comes wisdom, which is much more powerful than knowledge. You get a sense of these things. Get a sense of people. I think I am a pretty good judge of a person.

"To contextualise that, not a good or bad person, but will the person fit what I am trying to do. That is the main thing for me. There are fantastic footballers, fantastic people who are maybe not the right fit.

"I am not the right kind of manager for them. You have got to accept that. It is not a judgement call on a value basis. Does their personality, does their character, where they are in their careers.

"The last thing I want to do is bring a player here who is not a good fit. It is not good for me and it is not good for the player either. They have got a big decision to make and they need to know what they are walking into and I try to paint as clear a picture as possible what they are coming into."

A huge Carabao Cup semi-final second leg on Thursday night

Jonathan Gorrie2 hours ago

Liverpool welcome Tottenham to Anfield tomorrow night for the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final and have a one-goal deficit to overturn. Lucas Bergvall’s first ever goal for Spurs proved the difference in the first leg as the Reds lost for just the second time all season. However, few are predicting Spurs to complete the job.

Arne Slot’s side are favourites to reach the Carabao Cup final at Wembley, where they will face Newcastle after their 4-0 aggregate win over Arsenal. With the Reds flying high in both the Premier League and Champions League, Spurs continue to toil and their form since the turn of the year cannot be ignored.

To make matters worse, Spurs’ injury woes are not improving. Radu Dragusin has been ruled out with an ACL injury, Micky van de Ven is a doubt and Cristian Romero has been ruled out. Deadline Day signing Mathys Tel could be handed his debut for Spurs, while Liverpool are sweating over the fitness of Trent Alexander-Arnold who may not be risked.

Tottenham predicted XI

Ange Postecoglou likely faces a choice between Danso and Archie Gray alongside Ben Davies at centre-back after revealing that Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are not fit enough to start at Anfield.

Radu Dragusin is out for the season with a torn ACL.

Tel could come straight into the front three, although Postecoglou has tended to use Dejan Kulusevski on the right wing during big games and is unlikely to leave out either No9 Richarlison or captain Heung-min Son.

Pape Matar Sarr, Lucas Bergvall, Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma are jostling for three spots in midfield, with the Senegalese a possible impact sub again.

Spurs predicted XI (4-3-3): Kinsky; Porro, Danso, Davies, Spence; Bentancur, Bissouma, Bergvall; Kulusevski, Son, Richarlison

Postecoglou defends transfer business and denies Tel 'rejection'

Ange Postecoglou has defended Tottenham's 11th-hour transfer business, saying Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel could not have been brought to the club any sooner.

The Spurs head coach spent January repeatedly calling for "help" for his depleted squad, with Danso finally joining on loan from Lens on Sunday before Tel joined on loan from Bayern Munich shortly before Monday's 11pm deadline.

"They couldn't be [signed any sooner], that's the thing," the Australian said ahead of Thursday's Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool.

"That would be me saying, 'You know, the club didn't really care about our situation, they just twiddled their thumbs until the 29th and then went for it'.”

Ange Postecoglou has confirmed new signings Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso are available to make their Tottenham debuts tomorrow night.

Postecoglou said: “Kevin and Mathys are both available. They have trained and are cleared to play so they are all good.”

Asked whether Danso will start, Postecoglou said: “He will play. Whether he starts or not we will take a look because we have another game three days later and that has been our existence for quite a while now.

“You are right, Ben (Davies), Archie, Pedro (Porro) has played every minute of football we have had for the last three months, but the boys are handling it okay and the performances are still stacking up.

“It’s great to get Kevin in. He is ready to play. Whether he starts or he comes on we will make a decision. It’s really important he is part of it now because losing Radu was a massive blow so having him available is good.”

Ange Postecoglou confirms Micky van de Ven absence

Tottenham have been dealt a major injury blow after Ange Postecoglou confirmed Micky van de Ven has been ruled out of their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg at Liverpool.

Van de Ven played 45 minutes against Elfsborg last Thursday on his return after seven weeks out with the hamstring injury he suffered against Chelsea on December 8.

Postecoglou said on Sunday that Van de Ven was not in the Spurs squad for their 2-0 win at Brentford because he wanted to “manage his minutes” and “keep him on ice” for this week.

But, speaking ahead of the trip to Anfield on Thursday, Postecoglou said: "It's a bit of everything.

“He doesn't feel like... he got through the game no problem, but we had a look at the figures towards the physical [side] you know, he does a lot more training and he got through it OK, but the Premier League's a whole different beast.”

The defender asked to be withdrawn following a strain as Liverpool beat Bournemouth 2-0 on Saturday to maintain their lead at the top of the Premier League table.
