Building up to the 16:30 BST kick-off at Old Trafford, the boss also told journalists inside Carrington how he deals with the pressure of the job, which he says comes with the spotlight of being Reds boss.

Despite that pressure, he retains a strong belief that he can develop his squad to compete at the highest levels, starting with Spurs at the Theatre of Dreams tomorrow afternoon.

Keep scrolling to read, or watch, everything the manager had to say...

TRUSTING IN YOUTH

"That is the choices [deploying young players] we have made the last two seasons. I understand the impressions many have for Manchester United, because the history is so big, but that is the choices we have made, and that has also to do with some financials, and other restrictions we have to deal with. We made a choice for young players, and the young players are not in the level, you can't expect them [to be], we have to improve them, and they have to improve themselves. And we have to find a team that can be successful on a consistent base. And this team, in the last two years, they've shown they can do it, on occasions, and on occasions we can win trophies, but we have to get more consistent."

EUROPEAN AIMS

"It's [Champions League qualification] never spoken of how you ask me the question now, but what I think is: we have to succeed. And we have to win trophies, that's what this club stands for and the highest platforms; this club has the ambition to play in the highest platform. Yeah, we want to achieve the Champions League, that's clear, and we have two routes, that's one of the Premier League and the other one is the Europa League."

SQUAD BUILDING

"First, we are where we are now, with this squad. But, I think with all the restrictions we've had, we've done good work. And now we have to work with the squad, we have now to improve the squad. As I just made arguments: we have a god squad. We have a good squad, but with young players. We have to improve, we have to improve the team. And then we have targets, we have high targets, we want to achieve those targets for this season, but also the years beyond."

DEALING WITH PRESSURE

"Yeah, first of all, respect the criticism. There are many. You can have an opinion about football, when you are in a job, you have to deal with this. But I can't take every criticism into account. I don't read, of course, all the criticism, not even possible, but I don't want either to know. It's about: I need to know some, and some are very good advices... but for me, it's stay clinical, and see where the team is, which areas we have to improve. Stay also methodical, that you guide the team in the right pathway, and make sure you make the right steps to get the best out of the team."

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

"I think we will be judged every game, and that's normal. And everyone is, for every game, expecting United is winning, and we know that, so that's not a secret for anyone. When you are in this club, you have to deal with this factor, and we do. And it doesn't matter, if you are young or old or whatever, but yeah, we have to cope with this, and we have to get, of course, the best out of it and, yeah, match expectations. Everyone has, but we know also, and as with other respects, yeah: young players, young squad, a new team. Yeah, that takes time. And we are going in a good direction, I think, in the last couple of weeks, and in many aspects of football. Now it's about: be more efficient, score more goals, because that will win you games."

Erik: Spurs are a huge challenge

Sunday's game is being billed as a game between two rivals who are fighting for the top four in the Premier League. Do you see it that?

"[We are] definitely rivals. I think this is good because it is [going to be] a very attacking game, a very open game, a very intense game. I think it has big history, United against Tottenham."

There have been 12 goals scored in the four games you have managed in this fixture, three in a match and no 0-0's since 2014, so there is always seemingly goals in this game. It is an exciting fixture...

"I think both teams will be [thinking] about attacking and therefore there are always spaces which you leave then. That counts for both teams but of course we want to take control of the game and we will do everything to get this done. Of course this is a big challenge against Tottenham with their philosophy of the game. We are looking forward to finding the right solutions."

Are there any changes to your matchday squad for the game?

"I don't expect them. We are now three days up before the game and as I see now everyone came out well from the game against FC Twente. I expect the same squad will be available and then I will pick the team."

We saw Leny Yoro post a picture in the gym of him working hard. Is his recovery going as expected?

"Yes, he is doing very well. It is very pleasing that his rehab is going in the right direction and I expect him soon, but what I mean by soon is that he is now in the right planning process. He is in the right spot and he will return as soon as possible into the squad and then the team training."

Key quotes from Erik ten Hag press conference part one

The 16:30 BST kick-off pits the Dutchman against Ange Postecoglou in the dugout, with both sides playing in the Premier League after beginning our respective Europa League campaigns.

Erik was asked about the mentality of his side following Wednesday's 1-1 draw with FC Twente and fielded questions on a variety of topics at Carrington, as attention turns to domestic action once more.

From bettering the opposition's hunger to Bruno Fernandes's fitness, read the key quotes from part one of Ten Hag's media briefing below...

THE NEED TO BE CLINICAL

"Not scoring goals enough. That is the problem. That is the key area. We have to score goals as a team. I think across the team, we have the ability to score. That is clear, when you see all the opportunities we are creating, we are not scoring enough."

IT WILL BE DYNAMIC

"I think it will be a very intense game. It is always against Tottenham and I think it is also our style as well. So I think it is going to be a very dynamic, attractive game."

HIGH LEVELS NEEDED

"Every opponent has strengths and weaknesses and Tottenham have their strengths in their philosophy. [That is] very clear. [They are] very attacking but [that] leaves also space. That is what we take into account that can maybe help but you have to be very good against Tottenham. We want to control the game and you need the high performance level. We will create again I am sure but we need to take our chances."

WE NEED TO BE HUNGRY

"I think every team has this in a season. That is when you play 60 games, sure there will be games where you were not happy with the performance, but you are not happy when the opponent wants it more. I think that is the psychology side of football and top football. The team that can manage this the best is the most successful and we are ambitious so we always demand from yourself that you have more hunger than the opponent."

BRUNO WILL PROVE HIMSELF AGAIN

"I think he is capable and he has proven [himself] already so many times in the Premier League. He can create many chances. I am convinced he will not do differently. He will find his form. He is already creating chances but he will make final passes, he will score goals. 100 per cent and it is just a matter of time."

WE HAVE TURNED A CORNER

"I think you have to assess the situation. Still now we are working and we are in progress. We have to sign players and we made the choice to sign very young players. Like last year, Hojlund and Zirkzee and Leny Yoro are players we believe in for this moment but also for the future and we have to build them. When I started we spoke about more, we had to make a switch in the dressing room. We have turned a corner and we have to work with the squad and that takes time and of course, [that is] also not good behaviour for me, I am impatient. I want to go straight forward. To be fair, we have also had success in the last two seasons and we have to work very hard to bring further success."

WHAT’S THE TEAM NEWS?

Erik ten Hag may provide the latest update on his squad when he conducts his pre-match press conference later today (Thursday), which we’ll bring you the first part of from 17:30 BST.

Recent returnee Mason Mount got his first minutes since August’s trip to Brighton during Wednesday’s draw with FC Twente, having been welcomed back from an injury he picked up on the south coast.

Victor Lindelof, Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw and Leny Yoro all remained sidelined for the midweek outing, although Ten Hag was hopeful earlier this week that Shaw would be involved before the upcoming October international break.

As for Tottenham, the availability picture will likely become clearer after their own Europa League opener against Azerbaijani champions Qarabag tonight, for which they will be without forwards Wilson Odobert and Richarlison due to injury.

Key defender Cristian Romero is suspended for the European tie, while full-backs Sergio Reguilon and Djed Spence are ineligible, but all three could be involved at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Man Utd have options to choose from for Tottenham Hotspur clash

Since those words, Manchester United's ranks have been bolstered by the return of Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund.

Both Reds featured in Wednesday's 1-1 draw with FC Twente, our opening fixture of the Europa League, giving Erik further food for thought when he comes to name his starting XI for the visit of Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday (16:30 BST).

After the frustrating result against Twente, the boss discussed his attacking options now that our no.9 is nearing full fitness.

"Of course, they [the forwards] are all main [forwards], but Joshua [Zirkzee] is doing very good," he said.

"He created a very good chance, it was a brilliant shot and a very good stop.

"We are very pleased that Rasmus [Hojlund] is back, of course, and now he has to come up to full fitness, full speed, and he can score a goal, we know that. He’s very good in the box."

In addition to up front, United have four wingers jostling for two positions. Amad and Marcus Rashford started against Twente on Wednesday but on Saturday, at Crystal Palace, it was Alejandro Garnacho who got the nod in place of the latter. Antony started - and scored a penalty - in our 7-0 Carabao Cup success over Barnsley last Tuesday too.

It's worth noting that this luxury was something Ten Hag did not have last term, with injuries causing issues.

In defensive areas, there is also room for rotation. Harry Maguire replaced Matthijs de Ligt in the XI on Wednesday, but the summer arrival from Bayern Munich had started the two Premier League fixtures prior to this Europa League match.

There's much to ponder for Erik, then, and you can have your say too.
