Mikey Moore comments speak volumes about Tottenham under Ange Postecoglou

Son Heung-min has vowed to support young talent Mikey Moore on his journey at the club, predicting a bright future for the rising star. The Tottenham Hotspur winger played a key role in the team's 3-0 triumph over Qarabag FK in the Europa League and is recognised as a pivotal figure in nurturing new talent within the squad.

Son is seen as a mentor for the younger players thanks to his experience in the Premier League and European competition, with his wealth of knowledge aiming to inspire the next generation.

The winger has singled out and praised 17-year-old Moore, who made an appearance in the recent Europa League game, as one to watch. He highlighted the youngster's work ethic and said that patience is key to allow him to grow into a "top player".

Speaking ahead of the Qarabag fixture, the 32-year-old said: "Yeah, he's a fantastic boy and obviously, I mean, he's coming from the academy. You as a club, you look after him even more.

"Everybody is so welcoming and looking after him, so do I, because he's such a lovely kid and working hard every single day, coming with the first team with that age it's not easy, you know, like sometimes you're very shy."

"But he’s showing good personality and working hard, which is very important to me. When you see the young players are working hard in the first team and you just want to help, you just want to help him. When I was young, and now he’s coaching at Manchester United, Ruud van Nistelrooy, he was helping me a lot in my Hamburg time.

"Now I want to be that guy as well, you know, just having him around me and just talking about things, because we are playing in a similar position that if I can help him a little bit with advice, then I’m always open to it.

"Mikey is also coming to me most of the times and asking questions, which is very fun. I enjoy talking to him. He’s a fantastic boy and then I’m definitely sure that he can be a fantastic player. There’s no doubt because he has such amazing quality.

"As we always say about young players, let’s don’t give him too much pressure on his shoulders. Just let’s enjoy how he develops, how he improves every single day, every single season and as a fan, as supporters, we should just enjoy watching him and he will be, I think, one of the top players."

His comments highlight the tight-knit environment being fostered by manager Ange Postecoglou. However, following an injury sustained during the previous Europa League match, Son limped off the pitch in the 71st minute - meaning that Spurs might need to tap into its youthful roster sooner than expected.

The Australian manager brushed off initial injury worries post-match, highlighting: "I haven't spoke to him. He said he felt a bit tired, but I haven't spoken to him or the medical team yet."

However, on Friday he admitted that Son will face a late fitness test before their trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United. Postecoglou said: "Sonny, I don't think is too bad.

"He wants to train tomorrow and we will see how it goes and make a decision from there. We have another day up our sleeve to give him every chance."

Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag 'decides' on axing Bruno Fernandes for Tottenham clash

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is reportedly close to having to consider Bruno Fernandes' status as an untouchable starter, according to reports. However, despite the United captain's below-par start to the season, Ten Hag isn't expected to axe him in Sunday's Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

Fernandes has looked out-of-sorts at the dawn of the campaign, failing to score and registering just one assist in five league games.

He also frustrated supporters with his display in Wednesday's Europa League draw against FC Twente, intensifying the debate about his security as a consistent starter.

United host Tottenham at Old Trafford this weekend, with wins becoming more important with every underwhelming result.

The Red Devils could enter the match as low as 12th, having won just two and losing as many in their five league openers.

Fernandes is among the players under pressure to deliver, and he is expected to get the chance to do so against Ange Postecoglou's side.

According to GIVEMESPORT, Ten Hag is considered unlikely to drop the 30-year-old from his starting line-up and will instead trust him to rediscover his best form.

However, the report adds that the Dutchman is close to having to consider Fernandes' status, with supporters growing impatient.

Fernandes signed a new United contract in the summer, committing his future to the club until 2027 to end transfer uncertainty.

The Portuguese maestro was the subject of strong interest from multiple clubs, including Bayern Munich, and in Saudi Arabia.

His decision to remain at Old Trafford was unsurprisingly celebrated, given he has scored 79 goals and registered 70 assists in 241 appearances.

But Fernandes' early-season woes have prompted worry that he's entering the end of his prime years and could soon become another problem that INEOS have to fix.

Fernandes has been United's headline star since his January 2020 arrival, and his decline or exit would represent a daunting void to fill.

Club figures will hope that Mason Mount can overcome a challenging start to life in Manchester and grow into a worthy successor.

The 25-year-old endured an injury-stricken maiden year after switching from boyhood club Chelsea in a £60million deal.

He has also missed most of the current campaign so far through a hamstring problem but returned to the pitch in Wednesday's draw against FC Twente.

But Fernandes wouldn't have penned a new deal in M16 if he didn't believe he had more to give, and there will be confidence that he can recover from his slow start.

Man Utd team news: Predicted XI vs Tottenham with Garnacho and Rashford decisions made

Description

Erik ten Hag’s Man Utd slumped to another disappointing result in mid-week when FC Twente came from behind to snatch a point during the Red Devils’ Europa League opener.

It means United have won just three of their opening seven matches across competitions this term - a run of form that will likely have to change if Ten Hag wishes to stay in charge of the 20-time English champions.

Things don't get any easier for the Dutch manager, given Sunday’s clash against Tottenham is the first match in a mammoth run of fixtures.

Following this weekend, United travel to Porto in the Europa League, before heading to Aston Villa next Sunday, with matches against Brentford, Fenerbahce and Chelsea to come after that.

First, though, it’s all eyes on Spurs, with Express Sport predicting what XI Ten Hag might go for this weekend.

Man Utd predicted XI vs Spurs (4-2-3-1)

Goalkeeper: Onana

The only constant for United this season and for good reason too.

Andre Onana proved his worth once again last weekend when he pulled off a stellar double save to deny Crystal Palace from snatching a late winner.

Given Spurs have scored in all but one of their Premier League outings this season, he’ll have to be on top form once again.

Erik ten Hag leaps to Bruno Fernandes' defence as Man Utd captain criticised [LATEST]

Defence: Mazraoui, De Ligt, Martinez, Dalot

While there were frustrations with the attack during the Palace draw, bar the odd blip, United’s defence put on a solid showing in south London.

Ten Hag appears to have found a settled backline, with Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martínez forming a solid partnership at the heart of the defence.

In the continued absence of a left-footed left-back, Diogo Dalot will operate from that flank, while new fan favourite Noussair Mazraoui should get the nod on the opposite side.

Midfield: Ugarte, Mainoo

Rarely has a player gone from hero to villain as quickly as Christian Eriksen against FC Twente, with the midfielder opening the scoring during the first half, before clumsily giving the ball away for the equaliser in the second.

Despite his costly error, Eriksen blasted Man Utd's performance in the 1-1 draw, claiming the opposition ‘wanted it more’.

He’ll likely make way for Kobbie Mainoo in the XI this weekend, with new boy Manuel Ugarte operating from the base of midfield.

Attack: Amad, Fernandes, Garnacho

As demonstrated at Selhurst Park last weekend, goals have been an issue for the three-time European champions.

Captain Bruno Fernandes was blasted for his performance last Saturday, with the Portuguese international still searching for his first Premier League goal of the season.

He’ll look to support wide-men Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho, who have looked the most dangerous players for United so far.

Striker: Rashford

As for the centre-forward position, Joshua Zirkzee’s efforts can’t be knocked, but his finishing can be, meaning Ten Hag might turn to Marcus Rashford to lead the line this time around.

It means Rasmus Hojlund will have to wait another week longer for his first start of the season.

Man United predicted XI: Onana; Mazraoui, De Ligt, Martinez, Dalot; Ugarte, Mainoo; Amad, Fernandes, Garnacho; Rashford

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou provides Son Heung-min injury update

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Ange Postecoglou confirmed that Son Heung-min is a doubt for Tottenham's trip to Old Trafford on Sunday, but is hopeful that his captain will be ready to face Manchester United.

Son had to be withdrawn as he hobbled off the pitch in Spurs' 3-0 win against Qarabag, having played 83 minutes with 10 men, as Postecoglou explained that the skipper was his only new injury fear.

"Apart from Sonny everybody is OK, and I don't think Sonny is too bad," the Aussie explained. "He wants to train tomorrow so we will obviously see how it goes in training tomorrow and make a decision from there. We've got another day up our sleeve to give him every chance."

Speaking after goals from Brennan Johnson, Pape Matar Sarr and Dominic Solanke put their Kazakhstani opponents to the sword, Postecoglou said: "I haven't spoken to him (Son). He said he felt a bit tired, but I haven't spoken to him or the medical team yet."

Son has been an ever-present this season for Spurs, scoring twice and assisting another two goals in his five Premier League appearances.

His absence would be a big gap to fill, as Dejan Kulusevski could return to the starting lineup as part of the front three, with the possibility of Johnson moving over to the left flank. Timo Werner is another option and replaced Son after 71 minutes in the Europa League.

Postecoglou also addressed fears that Spurs could be without Son permanently, with the 32-year-old out of contract at the end of the season.

"I don't always have the final say, but like to think my input is significant on it, but the way he's performing and leading the club we certainly want him to stick around for a while," the boss said.

There is an option in Son's existing deal that allows the club to trigger a one-year extension, which is expected to be activated before he can speak with foreign clubs regarding a pre-contractual agreement in January.

The South Korea star revealed earlier this week that he had not held any talks with the club about extending his time in north London, but has previously reiterated his desire to stay at Spurs long-term.

"We haven’t talked [about] anything yet," Son said. "It was very clear for me, I’m very focused for this season. At this age, every second is like a goal.

"Especially this season, we are in a lot of competitions, it feels like I’m taking even more care about this. I’m just fully focused on this situation and this year.

"I just want to win something that everybody in this club and these players and all around deserves. That’s what I’m working for. In the future, you never know what’s going to happen, but I will make sure I give everything for this club.

"It’s almost ten years that I give everything. We’ll see what happens. I still have a contract with the club which is the main important thing. I just want to give everything while I have my contract."

Archie Gray issues telling Ange Postecoglou point after making European bow in Spurs win

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Archie Gray is keen to maintain his fearless approach in a Tottenham shirt after delivering an impressive performance on his European debut during Thursday's resounding 3-0 triumph over Qarabag.

The promising 18-year-old, who joined Spurs from Leeds in July for a hefty sum of £35million, showcased his versatility by bringing dynamism to the right-back position on his second start for the club.

Although traditionally a midfielder, Gray demonstrated flexibility in Spurs' set-up by drifting into central areas, something that manager Ange Postecoglou encourages with his tactics involving inverted full-backs.

This tactic did leave gaps at the back occasionally, but nevertheless, Gray contributed significantly to Tottenham's dominant Europa League win, even with the team down to 10 men for most of the match following Radu Dragusin's red card.

Postecoglou has repeatedly bigged up the trust he has in Gray and his fellow youngsters in north London, giving the England Under-21 star a significant boost in confidence.

Expressing gratitude for his manager's support, Gray said: "I'm really grateful to have the manager we've got. I'm a big fan of him. I'm grateful to have him here and to learn so much off him, it's a big opportunity for me.

"To hear stuff like that from him, it makes you trust yourself even more and have more confidence to go out there and be fearless. That's what he wants from us and hopefully we can go out and do that every game we're trusted to be in."

Gray has proudly followed in the footsteps of his grandfather Frank Gray, who won the European Cup with Nottingham Forest in 1980, and his great uncle Eddie Gray by featuring in European competition.

Despite a moment of tension when Dragusin was sent off early in the game for pulling Juninho back as Spurs' last defender, Postecoglou's decision to keep three forwards on the pitch paid off when Brennan Johnson netted five minutes later, marking his third goal in as many matches.

The second half saw Pape Sarr and Dominic Solanke add to the scoreline, while Qarabag's Toral Bayramov blasted a penalty over the bar in the 58th minute.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Gray shared his pride: "Yeah obviously a proud moment for me and my family. To be playing here, I am really grateful to be in this team and I am proud (to make my European debut).

"It was a tough game, especially after the first few minutes. Everyone makes mistakes and obviously Radu didn't want to do that. We'll all here for him.

"You try to stay calm. Things happen in football and you've just got to be able to get on with it and move on. That's part of football and the challenge.

"Everyone just took it in their stride I thought and we helped each other on the pitch, which was the main thing.

"We had to change a few things obviously but overall I thought we dealt with it well. We can still move the ball quicker and loads of things we can work on but definitely good to get a result."

Tottenham survive scare to beat Qarabag but hurt Bergvall let down

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Travel chaos subjected fans inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to a 35-minute kick-off delay but Spurs and Qarabag more than made up for it in their breathless Europa League opener.

The hosts played 83 minutes of regulation time a man light after Radu Dragusin's early red card, but goals from Brennan Johnson, Pape Matar Sarr and Dominic Solanke secured them a handsome victory on a night when the Azerbaijani visitors missed countless high-quality chances.

Juninho spurned a first-half sitter and saw a second-half header disallowed for offside, while Toral Bayramov blazed over from the spot.

But with three points in the bag, Tottenham won't mind one bit as Express Sport takes you through five key talking points from an entertaining night of European action...

Spurs survive huge scare

Ange Postecoglou will have feared the worst when he saw Dragusin haul down Juninho in the seventh minute. The centre-back, on a rare opportunity to stand in for Cristian Romero, was immediately shown a straight red card and sent back to the dressing room.

Dragusin became the first Tottenham player in history to be sent off on their debut in a major European competition. Luckily for him, it did not affect the outcome of the game as Spurs took their chances and Qarabag did not.

Bergvall let down and devastated

Dragusin's dismissal forced Postecoglou into a very, very early change. And Lucas Bergvall's face dropped when he looked over to see that he was the one sacrificed for Destiny Udogie on a rare start for his new club.

The 18-year-old has reportedly impressed Spurs coaches since landing at the club this summer, but he has had to sit tight and wait patiently for his chances to shine.

When this one was yanked away from him inside 12 minutes due to Dragusin's lapse in concentration, he could hardly contain his emotions, and cameras showed him looking crestfallen on the bench during the first half, with his hood up and his jacket zipped to the top.

Anti-Arteta

The world watched on in amazement on Sunday when Mikel Arteta stationed all 10 of his Arsenal players behind the ball in the second half against Manchester City after Leandro Trossard's red card.

Ange Postecoglou took a decidedly different approach here. Going for the jugular despite being at a numerical disadvantage, Spurs left themselves wide open at the back in their quest to kill the game.

While it was entertaining and, in principle, deserves to be applauded, the scoreline flattered the hosts, and even a hint of competent finishing would have seen Qarabag leave with at least a point.

Solanke on fire

Solanke is off the mark and flying in Tottenham colours. The £65million striker opened his Spurs account against Brentford at the weekend and he followed that up with a brilliant display on Thursday night, picking Julio Romao's pocket before assisting Brennan Johnson's opener, and then showing predatory instincts to turn in Tottenham's third.

Son injury scare

Midweek commitments can leave squads vulnerable to injury trouble and Spurs may have suffered a painful setback against Qarabag. Son Heung-min was substituted late on and he didn't look too pleased while leaving the pitch, making him a potential doubt for Sunday's clash at Manchester United.

Tottenham vs Qarabag kick-off delayed as chaos holds up Europa League tie

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Tottenham's Europa League clash with Qarabag has been pushed back from its original 8pm (BST) kick-off slot. Spurs players were late arriving to their home stadium due to travel chaos in north London.

Both sets of players are also believed to have been caught up in the disruption, leading Spurs to issue an official statement just after 7.15pm. It read: "Kick off for tonight’s fixture has been delayed due to severe travel disruption. Further information to follow."

A new kick-off time was confirmed of 8.35pm after both Spurs and Malmo finally arrived at the stadium in north London.

The Lilywhites named a strong line-up for their European opener, with first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario starting between the sticks and Son Heung-min captaining the side.

Manager Ange Postecoglou felt passionately enough about making a positive start to his continental campaign to name fellow first-team regulars Dominic Solanke and Micky van de Ven in his starting XI.

A selection of youngsters were also given the nod - presumably with one eye on Sunday's clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford - including Archie Gray at right-back, Pape Sarr in midfield and Lucas Bergvall alongside him.

Spurs had no European football to contend with last season after finishing eighth in 2022/23. Though the Europa League will stretch his squad to its limits, Postecoglou said during his pre-Qarabag press conference that he and his players were excited to be in the mix again.

"I am really pleased to be back there and excited to be back in it," he stated. "I spoke about it last year, that it was a real gap in our calendar and didn't help us at certain times of the year not having regular football, that challenge of playing different types of opposition and exposing our whole squad to some meaningful game-time.

"And the worst thing was sitting around watching other teams play in it. It didn't sit right with me so being back in a European competition is important."

Postecoglou was not as downbeat as other managers when discussing the new European format introduced by UEFA this season.

"All games will be meaningful because all teams will have something to play for," he added. "It's not that standard home and away, you will play eight different teams, eight different styles of football, so it's an interesting challenge."

Alan Shearer opens up on 'massive relief' at Tottenham

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Alan Shearer knows a thing or two about justifying a hefty transfer fee - and the Premier League’s record goalscorer reckons Dominic Solanke can now stop worrying about his own £65million price-tag.

Solanke started repaying Tottenham’s faith in him when he scored his first goal for the Londoners since his arrival from Bournemouth in the 3-1 victory over Brentford at the weekend.

Shearer became English football’s most expensive player when he made the £36m move from Southampton to Blackburn in 1992 - and then broke the world transfer record six years later when Newcastle paid Rovers £15m.

He justified the money by scoring heavily for both clubs - and ended his career with 260 Premier League strikes.

Shearer said: “He (Solanke) will be relieved because, through no fault of his own, he's gone for a massive transfer fee. Someone's been prepared to pay £65 million - that would've been hanging over him.

“He was also injured and only started a couple of games so already the noise increases and the quicker you get that goal, the better it is for you, for the club and for the belief that the fans have in you.

“He'll have had a really good weekend because for a forward, a goal makes all the difference.‌ Ideally, Solanke would've loved to have played the next day because of his confidence and he'll just not be able to wait to get out for the next game.

“We see it with so many strikers, when you get your first goal it's a massive relief and you just want the next game to come as quick as possible.”

Shearer now believes Ange Postecoglu’s men can build on their come-from-behind victory over Brentford after a tough start to the season.

He told Betfair: “One of the things that has stood out for Spurs in the early games is that they got into so many good positions and they were really wasteful in three or four of those first five games.

“They have created chances and got into those positions, they've just been really poor in front of goal. Brennan Johnson got his goal so that'll do him the world of good and they need to go on a good run now.”

Tottenham team news: Predicted XI vs Brentford with Solanke and Bissouma decisions

Submitted by daniel on
Picture
Remote Image
Description

Tottenham will aim to bounce back from last weekend's gut-wrenching defeat against Arsenal by beating Brentford this afternoon (Saturday). Another London derby awaits for Ange Postecoglou, albeit one with fewer strings attached, and he is in need of a confidence-boosting result after starting the season with one win in four Premier League games.

Spurs have added Wilson Odobert to their injured list this week but they will welcome Yves Bissouma back into the fold against the Bees.

Here, Express Sport takes you through how the north Londoners are likely to line up...

Tottenham's predicted XI (4-2-3-1)

Goalkeeper: Vicario

Guglielmo Vicario was less than convincing in the north London derby but the Italian is certain to keep his place, with a 36-year-old Fraser Forster unlikely to tempt Postecoglou into making a rash change between the sticks.

Defence: Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie

The manager established his defensive quartet soon after taking charge, and with a clean bill of health heading into the weekend, all four of them are set to start.

Others are pushing hard to upset the pecking order, however, as right-back Djed Spence scored in Wednesday's Carabao Cup win over Coventry City and Radu Dragusin has been impressive when called upon.

Cristian Romero suggested that he played against Arsenal with a fever last weekend but it is likely to have cleared up by now, paving the way for him to line up alongside the pacey Micky van de Ven at centre-back, with Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie taking care of the right and left flank respectively.

Defensive midfield: Bissouma, Bentancur

Bissouma has not played since picking up a knock during the international break but Postecoglou confirmed that he took part in training this week. His return to the side would allow Spurs to switch from a three-man midfield back to the manager's favoured 4-2-3-1 formation.

If he is fit enough, it therefore seems a no-brainer to include the Mali international in a double pivot alongside Rodrigo Bentancur.

Attacking midfield: Johnson, Maddison, Son

Timo Werner was forced off against Coventry with a knock, and though Postecoglou suggested he will be available again to face Brentford, he is unlikely to find his way into the starting XI. Wilson Odobert, meanwhile, will spend an extended period sidelined by a hamstring injury.

Richarlison is also a long-term absentee, with Postecoglou telling reporters to 'stop asking about him' during the week. An attacking midfield trio of Brennan Johnson on the right, James Maddison in the No 10 and Son Heung-min wide left seems the most likely configuration, unless Dejan Kulusevski finds his way into the side.

Striker: Solanke

With Spurs in need of a result, Postecoglou has a decision to make regarding whether to stick with Dominic Solanke up top. The £65million signing has been good in flashes but three appearances in all competitions have returned no goals.

Son is more than capable of playing through the middle, and he already boasts two Premier League strikes this campaign. But a show of faith in Solanke could be exactly what the former Bournemouth forward needs to get up and running.

Ange Postecoglou sends simple message to Tottenham critics before Brentford clash

Submitted by daniel on
Picture

Description

Tottenham's head coach Ange Postecoglou has a zen-like message for the club's critics: "Take a deep breath and do some yoga."

Despite a tumultuous week marked by defeat to Arsenal and a narrow Carabao Cup victory over Coventry, which sparked fan unrest, the 59-year-old is unfazed, claiming such noise doesn't affect his quest for Spurs' success.

Postecoglou remains resolute in his approach, stating that he has become adept at tuning out what he sees as a "massive distraction" from his goals.

"I have always been pretty good at staying clear-eyed and focused about what is important," he remarked ahead of Spurs' clash with Brentford.

He believes that regardless of whether the external criticism is justified, it's crucial not to let it derail his vision for the team.

"I learned along the way whether things are going well or not going well not to let that external noise distract me from what I believe needs to be done," he added.

Postecoglou is determined to stay on course:"Nothing will take me away from what I think needs to be done. I won't let it enter my space."

Despite the high stakes of managing in the Premier League, he reflects that his most challenging role was his first at South Melbourne, where failure could have ended his career before it even began.

The Australian coach also insists he won't alter his approach despite facing criticism, stating he has always "enjoyed the struggle and the difficult bits".

He added: "This is no different to anything else I've ever done. It's exactly the same process. For me it is about doing what is the right thing in my eyes to get success and hopefully change the fortunes of this fantastic football club.

"The tenure of managers and the patience with anything has exponentially shortened with the expansion of so many platforms of people in one way or another trying to rush to judgement and make calls on things.

"If I was a young manager today I suspect I would deal with it differently. I would probably be thinking short-term with everything I do so I could get a career for myself."

Yves Bissouma returned to training on Friday following a calf injury and is available for selection against Brentford. However, young winger Wilson Odobert faces a significant period on the sidelines after sustaining a hamstring injury at Coventry.
