Celtic's summer recruitment already making the 'hard work' worthwhile

“I still have very good contact with Sonny,” the ex-Austrian internationalist told Spurs' match day programme in the build up to their own European clash versus Qarabag.

“We speak quite a lot – especially after my goal in the Champions League, he texted me about that.

"We still have a very good relationship and I always try to see him as much as possible, but of course it’s not always so easy because we both have a very busy schedule and he also has the national team. But we always try to speak as much as possible and he’s still one of my best friends.”

'Both great men': Maddison talks life under Rodgers and Postecoglou

Maddison, 27, spent four years under Rodgers at Leicester City before being signed by Postecoglou's Spurs for £40million during summer 2023. It may still be early days in his latest chapter but he's already gained a lot of respect from his head coach,

With valuable experiences under both coaches, Maddison's insight is particularly insightful for Celtic fans, who have witnessed the success each manager has brought to the Scottish giants over the past decade.

One of the most notable differences Maddison pointed out is the nature of the relationships each manager cultivates with their players.

Postecoglou tends to maintain a more professional distance, keeping interactions with his squad focused and purposeful.

This approach, according to Maddison, helps establish a respectful environment where players understand the importance of boundaries while still feeling supported.

In stark contrast, Rodgers is known for his approachable nature.

Maddison characterised him as a manager who fosters open dialogue, encouraging players to drop by his office for casual conversations or a cup of coffee. This hands-on style creates a more relaxed atmosphere, allowing players to feel at ease and connected to their coach.

Despite their differing methodologies, Maddison holds both managers in very high regard, recognising the unique strengths each gaffer brings to their respective teams.

Celtic's Anthony Ralston should never be a scapegoat

“He is definitely no-nonsense," the former Aberdeen loanee told Golf Life. "He’s a good man (Ange). He’s a unique human being.

"You can tell he’s a brilliant man and when I spoke to him before I signed the first thing he said to me was congratulating me on the birth of my twins when I first met him.

“So I knew straight away he’s a good man but he’s also someone who will not let the manager and player relationship get too tight. And that is just his way.

“For example like Brendan Rodgers who I had for five years at Leicester, he was very arm around you and made you feel so good. Like you could go in his office for a coffee and talk. They’re both great men but just different. Ange keeps that manager and player relationship socially to a minimal, he wouldn’t mind me saying that I don’t think.

"Again, even though he doesn’t talk to you individually as much as someone like Brendan Rodgers, I would still feel that he believes in me by the way he is and the way he conducts himself and talks in the meetings. He believes in me without me needing to hear it.”

Reports have suggested that Nick Montgomery could be in line for the role vacated by Chris Davies in north London.

The ex-Hoops coach recently left his position working under Postecoglou in order to become the head coach of Birmingham City in League One.

FTBL states Postecoglou has now turned his attention to former Hibernian boss Montgomery as his successor.

The 42-year-old was sacked by chiefs at Easter Road towards the end of last season after the club's failure to finish in the top six of the division.

He was permanently replaced by Scottish Cup-winning hero David Gray, who is working under new sporting director Malky Mackay.

Postecoglou will be familiar with Montgomery's body of work carried out in Australia before his experience in Scotland.

He had an excellent record in the A-League, with a title triumph at Central Coast Mariners his biggest achievement.

The former midfielder was lined up for a potential return to management a month ago with Western Sydney Wanderers but instead they brought in Perth Glory's Alen Stajcic.

"It was an honour to be appointed manager of Hibernian Football Club and to become part of a club with so much history," Monty said after leaving Hibs. "After arriving with my Assistant Manager Sergio (Raimundo) and Goalkeeping Coach Miguel (Miranda), at a time when the club had been through a difficult start to the season, I was confident that we could lift the club and help to challenge for both cups and the top six positions.

“Whilst I am proud we made the semi-final of the League Cup and the quarter-final of the Scottish Cup, I am disappointed that we narrowly missed out of the top six in the last minute of the final game.

“I am immensely proud to have given a debut to the youngest player in the club's history, as well as four other academy graduates, and I hope they will continue their development to become first team regulars in the near future.

"I depart having met some wonderful people and witnessed the passionate fan base who showed support throughout all of the challenges the club faced during the season."
