Ange Postecoglou reveals Son Heung-min concern after Tottenham draw with Roma

Ange Postecoglou admits he has to be careful with Son Heung-min as his Tottenham squad is looking thin, especially in wide areas.

Son opened the scoring against Roma in north London on Thursday night, with the Europa League game eventually ending 2-2 thanks to an injury time equaliser for the Italians from Mats Hummels.

Spurs are ninth in the Europa League table, with the top eight automatically qualifying for the knockout stages so they are in a decent spot, but with work to do.

Postecoglou is trying to balance challenges in the Premier League, Carabao Cup and in Europe and he is doing so with a number of injuries.

On the wings, Spurs are missing Richarlison, Mikey Moore and Wilson Odobert, while Guglielmo Vicario, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are out in other areas.

The manager says he has to keep picking certain players as his options are limited, but must be careful with them, particularly Son.

‘I don’t know if he’s lacking confidence. Sonny’s had a disrupted year for us, so that doesn’t help,’ said the Australian. ‘Yeah, he had some good chances tonight to get the goal and he’s getting in those areas.

‘Look, he’s got the quality to take those chances and we know he’s done it consistently for almost a decade, but he’s had a disrupted season being in and out.You can see he is getting back to full fitness now, which is the main thing for us.

‘We’re quite thin in those wide areas, so he’s playing and we’ve got to make sure we are careful with him, Brennan [Johnson] and Timo [Werner] because they are the only wingers we’ve got left and will have for the foreseeable future.

‘I thought tonight, it wasn’t just Sonny. There were quite a few really good chances, we hit the post three times as well and a couple cleared off the line. I still felt there were a couple of occasions where a bit more composure would have finished the game off.’

It is a very busy December ahead, starting with a home Premier League clash with Fulham on Sunday and Postecoglou will head into it with a number of injury headaches.

‘It is what it is,’ he said. ‘We’ve been in this situation for quite a while. We are fairly thin in terms of squad depth at the moment. We had four kids on the bench tonight so we couldn’t even fill the quota.

‘It is what it is, we’ve been dealing with this for quite a while and I still think we certainly had enough of the game and enough clear cut chances to win the game.’

Spurs will play nine games in December across the Premier League, Carabao Cup and Europa League, including clashes with Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United.

‘That’s going to be our schedule and we understand that,’ said the boss. ‘It’s challenging with the absences we have at the moment in terms of the squad, but I think tonight our football was still good but we just lacked a bit, that clinical edge to finish the game off.

‘Overall this whole European competition, we’ve had some challenges within the first five games so we’re in a strong position and that’s the main thing.’

Guglielmo Vicario blow will hit Tottenham season but they'll beat Roma

Ange Postecoglou must hate November with a passion as it never ends well for Tottenham.

Hark back 12 months and Spurs were flying high at the top of the Premier League table only to lose 4-1 at home to Chelsea when Micky van de Ven and James Maddison suffered long-term injuries and Cristian Romero and Destiny Odogie were suspended for multiple matches after receiving red cards.

Fast forward to this week and the central defensive pairing of Van de Ven and Romero, among the best in the division, are both in the treatment room with Richarlison and Wilson Odobert. Rodrigo Bentancur is serving a seven-match ban for making a racial slur about team-mate Son Heung-Min in an interview and now they will be without goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario for the foreseeable future after he had surgery on a fracture to his right ankle.

The Italian suffered the injury half an hour into the 4-0 demolition of Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday but stayed on the pitch to make a series of superb saves and keep a rare clean sheet away from home. Brave kid.

Fraser Forster, the former Celtic, Newcastle and Southampton goalkeeper, steps up to the plate and although the 36-year-old has enjoyed an above average career he’s not the sweeper-keeper Vicario is and there have to be question marks over his ability to play the ball out from the back in the same fluid manner.

Forster would most likely have started this week’s match against Roma in any case as he’s already featured in Tottenham’s Europa League campaign and Spurs will be praying he can prove himself as the perfect replacement the way Ben Davies and Radu Dragusin seamlessly stepped into the heart of defence against City.

Spurs boss Postecoglou has ruled out trying to find another keeper in the January transfer window so the answer to Big Ange’s problems is obviously going to be to score goals galore – they already top the Premier League with 27 in just 12 matches, three more than next best Liverpool, and have found the net three or more times in seven of 18 matches in all competitions.

As usual it’s going to be a rollercoaster ride for Tottenham fans but they can start life without Vicario by beating Roma outright at 8/11 with Ladbrokes, Coral and William Hill, while Brennan Johnson is 7/1 with bet365, Paddy Power and Betfair to bag the first goal and 21/10 with the former firm to score at any point.

• Ruben Amorim should gain his first victory as Manchester United manager when they entertain Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League duel at Old Trafford.

More Trending

United were mediocre in the 1-1 draw at Ipswich on Sunday and under 2.5 goals is 41/20 with BetMGM and Unibet, while Bruno Fernandes is 23/4 to break the deadlock and 8/5 with Paddy Power, Betfair and bet365 to score at any time.

Chelsea are 23/20 with StarSports to lead HT/FT at Heidenheim 1846 in the Europa Conference League.

• It’s estimated by the US Department of Agriculture that 46million turkeys are gobbled up by hungry Americans each Thanksgiving Day. The biggest turkey devoured this year will be the truly awful New York Giants when they face the Dallas Cowboys in Arlington.

The hosts are not very good either but pulled off a shock win against the impressive Washington Commanders on Sunday and can win by more than 3.5 points at 6/5 with Ladbrokes and Coral.

Noel Gallagher names 'biggest frauds' in Premier League and makes brutal prediction

Oasis guitarist and Manchester City fan Noel Gallagher has declared Tottenham as the ‘biggest frauds’ in the Premier League.

Gallagher watched Spurs destroy his beloved City 4-0 at the Etihad on Saturday – but he has brutally predicted that Fulham will ‘batter’ Ange Postecoglou’s side in Tottenham’s next top-flight match on Sunday.

Quizzed about City’s drop-off, with Pep Guardiola’s side having lost their last five matches, Gallagher couldn’t resist a little dig at Spurs as he told talkSPORT: ‘The whole entire thing seems to have fallen off a cliff but if we hadn’t won four leagues in a row, I’d be worried.

‘This is an inevitable drop off of maybe five or ten per cent and on Saturday, the one team we don’t want to play as City fans after four defeats in a row is Tottenham at home.

‘They do it to us every time they come there, they’re the biggest frauds in the football league.

‘They’ll get battered by Fulham at the weekend, no problem. But they always turn up for us.

‘I wasn’t expecting to win that game, I certainly wasn’t expecting to lose but 4-0 was a shocker.’

Meanwhile, Gallagher feels the main issue for City this season is that they are too reliant on Erling Haaland for goals.

‘To have Haaland as your only source of goals, you’re asking for it really,’ Gallagher added. ‘I know it’s going to be difficult to buy a forward who knows he’s going to be playing second fiddle to Haaland.

‘We’ve always had a [Julian] Alvarez or a [Riyad] Mahrez chipping in and Phil [Foden] last season.’

Gallagher, though, is not too concerned about City’s title rivals Liverpool, despite their eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

‘What I will say is we are very good at chasing,’ Gallagher said. ‘When it turns, we can sit in there. 11 points, is it insurmountable?

‘There is a lot to play for but I’m not heading [to Anfield on Sunday] expecting a win, I’d take a draw.’

Tottenham’s emergency plan to replace Vicario after nightmare injury

Description

Tottenham are scouring the market for emergency replacements for Guglielmo Vicario after the Italian was ruled out for months with an ankle injury.

The club announced on Monday night that the goalkeeper had undergone surgery on his ankle.

Vicario fractured his ankle during Saturday’s 4-0 win against Manchester City at the Etihad.

The injury is set to keep the Italy international on the sidelines for months, in a major blow to Ange Postecoglou.

The club failed to sign a back-up to Vicario last summer, meaning veteran Fraser Forster has served as his number two.

Now the club face selecting Forster on a regular basis over the packed festive schedule.

But the Telegraph say Spurs are exploring emergency deals to provide cover for Vicario’s absence.

The January transfer window opens in five weeks’ time, at which point Spurs could sign a new goalkeeper.

But the club are exploring free agents on the market as they desperately look to replace Vicario.

Spurs face Roma in the Europa League on Thursday before hosting Fulham in the Premier League.

Tottenham suffer Guglielmo Vicario injury nightmare as goalkeeper goes under the knife

Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario faces a spell out of action after undergoing surgery on a fractured ankle.

The Italian suffered the injury during Tottenham’s stunning 4-0 win at Manchester City on Saturday evening.

The goalkeeper was in fine form during the match and clearly completed the game in some pain as he made it to the final whistle.

However, Spurs have confirmed on Monday that Vicario has had an operation on his ankle, and while they did not state how long he is expected to be out for, it is set to be a lengthy spell.

A statement from Tottenham on Monday read: ‘We can confirm that Guglielmo Vicario has today undergone surgery for a fracture of his right ankle.

‘The 28-year-old suffered the injury during Saturday’s Premier League victory at Manchester City.

‘Guglielmo will be assessed by our medical staff to determine when he can return to training. We’re all behind you, Vic.’

Tottenham have a very experienced back-up in Fraser Forster, with the 36-year-old having been at the club since 2022.

The England international has not played a Premier League game since the 2022/23 season, but has been in action in the Carabao Cup and Europa League during the current campaign.

Vicario joins Ange Postecoglou’s injured list, which already includes Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Mikey Moore, Wilson Odobert and Richarlison, while Rodrigo Bentancur is suspended.

It is an extremely busy period on the calendar that Vicario will sit out, with Tottenham competing in the Premier League, Europa League and Carabao Cup over the next month.

Their next outing is a home game against Rome on Thursday night before hosting Fulham in the top flight on Sunday.

Romero is the closest to a return of any of the injured contingent, with the defender potentially available for the London derby with the Cottagers.

Kyle Walker makes concerning Man City prediction ahead of crunch Liverpool clash

Description

Kyle Walker has warned that Manchester City will get ‘walked over’ by Liverpool if they don’t improve before their crunch Premier League clash next weekend.

City fell to a scarcely believable 4-0 home defeat against Tottenham meaning they have now lost five games in a row for the first time since 2006.

The concerning defeat leaves the defending league champions five points behind Liverpool, although Arne Slot’s side could extend their advantage to eight points should they beat Southampton on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola’s side, however, have little time to lick their wounds, with a Champions League tie against Feyenoord on Tuesday before a huge trip to Anfield next Sunday.

Should the Reds win against Southampton and next weekend versus City, they would then boast a commanding 11-point lead over Guardiola’s side.

And Walker has insisted his team must turn their fortunes around quickly or face another afternoon of misery at Anfield.

‘It’s a great game to turn it around and take three points from the team who sit above you,’ he told Sky Sports.

‘But we can’t put in a performance like that or we’ll get walked over. We have a Champions League game to prepare for that massive game on Sunday and keep within touching distance of Liverpool.’

Asked if the side’s poor form has seen them lose confidence, Walker responded: ‘I wouldn’t say we’ve lost confidence together. I’ve spent eight years with this group. You lose confidence as a team but we have to remember what we’ve achieved together.

‘What we’ve achieved in the past means nothing, it’s history. We have one team above us doing really well. We’ll keep fighting to the end as we always do.

More Trending

‘The best way to turn this round is on Tuesday. Hopefully, the mojo comes back and we see the normal City from the past eight seasons. ‘Your powers don’t just go. We know our qualities and weaknesses. You get a win, you get your confidence and we’re back to how we used to feel.’

Guardiola, meanwhile, accepted that a defeat to Liverpool could signal the end of their title hopes. ‘Yes. In terms of Liverpool winning, winning, winning it’s true,’ he said.

‘I don’t know what is going to happen, but the reality is here and we have to win games. Maybe the expectation is so high but we are not ready to start thinking about what is going to happen at the end of the season.

‘In the end, if we don’t win [the league] it’s because we don’t deserve it. We won it in the past because we deserved it.’

Jamie Redknapp slams Man City star: 'He couldn't get near anybody'

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Jamie Redknapp has slammed Ilkay Gundogan after the Manchester City midfielder’s leggy display in his side’s 4-0 loss to Tottenham.

The defending Premier League champion, seeking to stop the rot after four losses in a row, fell behind early after a well-taken brace from James Maddison.

And it only got worse for Pep Guardiola’s side after the break as Pedro Porro’s goal – followed by Brennan Johnson’s late strike – condemned City to their fifth loss in a row.

Much has been made of the absence of Ballond d’Or winner Rodri in midfield and it proved telling once again, with Ange Postecoglou’s bossing the game in the middle of the park.

Gundogan, who returned to the Etihad this summer at the age of 33, was paired alongside Rico Lewis in midfield but turned in a poor display on Sunday night.

And the German came under fire from Redknapp at full-time who felt the former Barcelona midfielder was struggling to keep up with his Tottenham counterparts.

‘Man City are off it at the moment,’ he said on Sky Sports. ‘They are short and things aren’t quite clicking in midfield with that balance.

‘Gundogan couldn’t get around the pitch today – he couldn’t get near anybody and his focus wasn’t right.’

Analysing Maddison’s first goal, Redknapp criticised Gundogan again, adding: ‘What happens with Gundogan and Maddison is one of the most basic parts of midfield play.

‘When somebody runs without the ball and they go in behind you just have to follow your man and Gundogan just makes one of the most elementary mistakes in football by not following [his man].

‘All he has to do is mark that run but [instead] he puts John Stones in a really bad position.

‘Gundogan has to follow that run and that’s a really poor from him. He just couldn’t match Spurs’ energy in midfield all game.’

The defeat leaves City five points behind Liverpool in the league table, although Arne Slot’s side can extend that lead to eight points should they beat Southampton on Sunday.

Paul Merson's Premier League predictions, including Man City v Spurs, Ruben Amorim opener and Arsenal 'cup final'

Submitted by daniel on

Description

The only reason why you would think Leicester have a chance here is because we are coming off an international break. Chelsea would have had players involved with their national teams and their travel could have been tiring. But I would still have to go with Chelsea in this one. They are playing alright and I have a feeling this could be an easy win.

The game against Arsenal was quite even and it shows Chelsea are on the right track under Enzo Maresca. Four years ago, Chelsea would have lost that game after conceding first but they ended up grabbing a point.

I would be shocked if Chelsea finished above Arsenal though. Their squad is really young and I doubt they can get third place this season. If they win the Europa Conference League and finish inside the top four, that would count as a successful campaign. It will also make them the first club to win all three European trophies on offer now.

Leicester are not expected to cause Chelsea a lot of problems here. I’m predicting an easy win for the Blues.

Prediction: Leicester 0-3 Chelsea

Wolves got a massive result before the international break when they beat Southampton. But this is a really difficult game for them against Fulham. After the game at Craven Cottage, they face Bournemouth, Everton, West Ham, Ipswich Town and Leicester. Gary O’Neill has to look at those fixtures and believe they can put on a bit of a run.

If Wolves are not six points clear of the relegation zone by the end of December, they will get relegated!

Fulham are underrated in my opinion. Marco Silva is doing a great job there. Over the years, we have had teams like Brighton and Brentford who can upset big teams. Fulham are in that category now. They are expected to get some good results this season and cause problems along the way for the big boys in the league.

I don’t think Fulham will qualify for European football though. There are stronger teams than them that are competing for it and they could come up short. However, this game against Wolves shouldn’t be a problem for them.

Prediction: Fulham 2-0 Wolves

Everton need to start winning football matches. It’s becoming a bit of a five-horse race to avoid relegation now and I will not count Everton in that. But if they do what they did against Southampton a few weeks ago, they will be pulled back into that conversation!

It’s because of the way Everton play that I feel they will always somehow get out of trouble in the end. Make no mistake, this is a hard game for Everton and I don’t think they will win. I look at this game and Brentford are a team that score a lot of goals, Everton don’t. So I have to back Brentford to win here.

Who need a player in January? Bryan Mbeumo is a good choice. One thing that was missing from his game was goals, but now he has brought that to the table as well. It depends on who wants to sign him though. I don’t see a mid-table club spending £40-50million to get him in January. So it’s a question of whether one of the big boys want him, I doubt that. He has to keep doing what he is doing for the rest of the season. If he does that, he will be bought by someone, one million per cent sure.

Prediction: Everton 0-1 Brentford

It is a tricky game for Arsenal because they have no more mistakes left in them now. They have to keep winning, it’s as simple as that. Nottingham Forest are actually a better team away from home. But that defeat to Newcastle is a sign of their good start slowly wearing off now.

I feel Arsenal’s midfield will be too much for Forest in this game. The likes of Martin Odegaard and Thomas Partey will dominate them. Forest are always a threat on the counter-attack, but I’m not sure if Chris Wood can cause many problems to the likes of William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes.

This is a cup final for Arsenal, a must-win game. Mikel Arteta and company have some lovely fixtures coming upand will be hopeful of putting on a solid run. I back them to win their next six or seven games and it starts with this one.

Except Liverpool, they have now already played away games against all the teams that finished in the top six last season. And we’re only 11 games into the season! That shows how tough a run they’ve had and now it’s time for them to enjoy some of the relatively easier fixtures. Arsenal have to keep winning and if they win their next six or seven games, they will be back in the title race and will have every chance to win it.

If it becomes a 12-point gap between them and the league leaders, then Arsenal have no chance. They are nine points behind Liverpool now,. that’s why it’s a cup final from here on.

Prediction: Arsenal 3-1 Nottingham Forest

What a game we have on our hands here, this will be good. Brighton beat Manchester city, they should have beat Liverpool too in my opinion. There’s not a lot wrong with this tea, just like their opponents Bournemouth. That’s why this is one of the most entertaining games of the week in my opinion, there will goals in it too.

If I had to pick one standout players from Bournemouth I would choose Evanilson. To come into this league and play, it’s really difficult. But he looks lively and a real threat. He has surprised me with how well he has been playing after coming here. I would even say he’s doing better than Dominic Solanke at the moment, which is crazy considering he is the replacement for the latter at Bournemouth.

Evanilson has scored four goals in his last six appearances and that includes some important goals like the one in the win over Manchester City and the late equaliser away from home at Aston Villa. Not many players from Portugal come here and do that well, Cristiano Ronaldo is an exception!

I would like to say some things about Danny Welbeck as well. He has been outstanding for Brighton this season. He plays every week, virtually every game and stills scores goals at this age. Barring the last two games, he had four goals in five matches. They were big goals too, especially that one in the comeback win over Tottenham. I have to give him a special mention, his goal returns have improved so much.

Prediction: Bournemouth 2-2 Brighton

Big game for both teams. Aston Villa have to get back to winning ways. Form-wise they have dropped off a bit and they must turn that around quickly. Villa are without a win in their last five games across all competitions having lost four on the trot after the draw with Bournemouth.

During this wretched run of form, Crystal Palace beat Villa in the EFL Cup round of 16 clash. But Palace are still in a bit of trouble in the league in my opinion. After this trip to Villa, they have some huge games coming up where they face Newcastle, Ipswich, Manchester City, Brighton and Arsenal. That’s a tough run.

I’m backing Villa to get back on track with a win here. They are ninth in the league now and if they don’t win again, they will drift away from the big boys quickly. I know they are only one point away from third place but there are a lot of teams in front of them. Their goal difference is zero, which is madness. Tottenham are actually behind Villa and Spurs’ goal difference is +10!

Goal difference acts as an extra point in this league, so Villa must be careful and work on improving it. They also have Juventus coming up in the Champions League and like I always say, they must not get caught up with that playing on their minds. It has to be one game at a time.

Prediction: Aston Villa 2-0 Crystal Palace

If someone would have said to me at the start of the season that Manchester City would lose four games in a row, I would have said never in a million years! Yet, here we are. It doesn’t get any easier for them this weekend, Tottenham are a tough opponent.

But then again, Tottenham are Spursy. Who would have thought they would get beat by Ipswich? Still, it wouldn’t shock me if Spurs get a result here, simply because Manchester City have not been Manchester City for a while now.

Since the draw against Newcastle, barring the wins over Slovan Bratislava and Sparta Prague, City have not wiped the floor with anyone like we are used to seeing. I just can’t imagine them losing five in a row, that’s why I’m going for a City win here. But I can assure you it won’t be an easy win.

Tottenham have history of getting results against City, it goes back a long time. I remember them getting a result under Harry Redknapp to qualify for Europe, thanks to a goal from Peter Crouch. So it’s a tricky game. There is no pressure on Tottenham this week and if they click, I think they have a chance. That’s why I say I wouldn’t be shocked if Spurs get a result.

Manchester City not being their usual self is entirely down to Rodri’s absence and not because Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan aren’t firing. Rodri moves the ball quickly and that opens up space, City are missing that now. But I certainly think Gundogan looks nowhere near the player he was before, he is struggling.

Prediction: Manchester City 2-1 Tottneham

I can’t see anything but a Liverpool win here. The only game they lost this season was after the international break in September, but I doubt that will happen again. I can’t see Southampton passing the ball around like they do for 90 minutes and not shoot themselves in the foot. I have a feeling Southampton will score though. But over the 90 minutes, they will get hammered. If Liverpool can take their chances, it could become a rout!

Liverpool have the easiest fixtures among the top three this weekend. If they win and the others slip up, the title race is over. We’re on thin ice with these teams at the moment.

The contract situation is getting a bit nervy, isn’t it? I get this feeling that one of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk or Mohamed Salah will sign a pre-contract agreement with another club in January. We might not see it in public, but they might just do it. If you’ve got just six months left on your contract and you get injured, what happens then? Better safe than sorry.

I’m not sure if Van Dijk will do it, but one of the other two might. I think it could be Alexander-Arnold, especially with talk about Real Madrid as well.

Everything is perfect at Liverpool now, so no one is talking about this situation. But if they start losing games, it could get a little bit toxic with fans calling them out. I might be wrong, but the fans will be angry, especially with someone homegrown like Alexander-Arnold if he doesn’t sign and they start losing. When you think of it, it’s actually quite unbelievable. They are probably the first three names on the team sheet at Liverpool and yet they are out of contract in six months!

Prediction: Southampton 0-3 Liverpool

It’s a good first game to be in charge if you’re Ruben Amorim, but it’s also a dangerous game and I’ll tell you why. Manchester United cannot lose this game, that would be catastrophic. But if they win, people are going to be like, “It’s only Ipswich, of course you had to win”.

This is certainly a tough game for Manchester United. I’m backing them to win but I don’t think it will be easy. Amorim will want to play three at the back, this is a good game to test that out. Even though I feel United will win against Ipswich, I have a sneaky feeling about this game.

Marcus Rashford was clearly not the first-choice in attack under Ruud van Nistelrooy. So he has to turn things around under Amorim. If he is unable to do that, I think United have a big problem. Rashford’s wages are going to become an issue if they want to move him on. I don’t know who buys him at the moment. It will be interesting to see how he performs under Amorim, certainly something to keep an eye on.

Prediction: Ipswich 1-2 Manchester United

Newcastle are starting to pick up pace now. They have won three in a row and sit just a point off third place. I can see them winning this game. If they start this game well, they will run riot.

West Ham got absolutely rinsed by Nottingham Forest a couple of weeks back. I don’t even know how they beat Manchester United! I worry for West Ham, but I still think they will give Julen Lopetegui a lot more time. If they weren’t going to back him, they would have got rid of him after the draw with Everton before the international break.

If you are counting on Lopetegui to turn it around against Newcastle here and Arsenal next, you are delusional! I don’t think he will be there long-term but he still has time. West Ham have a clash against Leicester coming up in two games’ time, that’s a cup final and if he does not win, he won’t be in the job.

I’d be shocked if West Ham get anything out of this game. It has Newcastle written all over it. I’m backing the hosts to slaughter West Ham and become a strong candidate in the race for the top four.

Prediction: Newcastle 3-0 West Ham

Tottenham star’s camp ‘convinced’ Ruben Amorim wants to sign him for Man Utd

Ruben Amorim could make an attempt to sign Tottenham defender Pedro Porro for Manchester United, according to reports in Spain.

Having replaced Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, Amorim will take charge of his first game against Ipswich Town on Sunday.

The Portuguese coach is expected to implement the 3-4-3 formation that served him so well in his homeland which is expected to eventually lead to major changes in personnel.

While the tactic didn’t serve his predecessor well, United have been strongly linked with moves for a host of Amorim’s former sporting stars. Goal machine Viktor Gyokeres has quickly emerged as a transfer target for next summer with 17-year-old Geovany Quenda and centre-half Ousmane Diomande also reportedly being considered.

Porro spent two-and-a-half years working under Amorim at Sporting before joining Tottenham in January 2023 – an initial loan which included the obligation buy in the summer for €40m.

The Spain international has starred in north London but reports in Spain suggest he could be convinced to leave Spurs should United and Amorim come calling.

AS report people close to Porro are ‘convinced’ Amorim will push for United to try and sign the right-back, describing the relationship between the two as ‘excellent at all levels.’

United would appear to be well stocked at right-back with Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui both natural options on that side of the pitch. But Amorim’s plans for the team will become clearer in the coming weeks and months.

More Trending

Porro has been a key figure in Ange Postecoglou’s side but there is interest growing in the full-back.

Real Madrid are considering him as a viable alternative to Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose contract expires at the end of the season.

AS report Porro is considered a more balanced option at right-back in their bid to find a long-term replacement for Dani Carvajal.

But Tottenham’s valuation could scupper any interest with the Premier League side demanding €70million, a fee Real are not prepared to meet.

Tottenham to appeal Rodrigo Bentancur ban for Son Heung-min racist remark

Tottenham are planning to appeal Rodrigo Bentancur’s seven-match ban for his racist remark about Spurs captain Son Heung-min.

The Football Association handed Bentancur the suspension, plus a £100,000 fine, earlier this week after he suggested that all people from South Korea ‘looked the same’ during an interview in June.

Bentancur denied the charge but a statement from the FA on Monday read: ‘An independent Regulatory Commission has imposed a seven-match suspension and £100,000 fine on Rodrigo Bentancur for a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to a media interview.

‘It was alleged that the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder breached FA Rule E3.1 as he acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words and/or brought the game into disrepute.

‘It was further alleged that this constitutes an “aggravated breach”, which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference – whether express or implied – to nationality and/or race and/or ethnic origin.

‘Rodrigo Bentancur denied this charge, but the independent Regulatory Commission found it to be proven and imposed his sanctions following a hearing.’

What did Rodrigo Bentancur say to Son Heung-min?

In an interview on Uruguayan Television programme Por La Camiseta, Bentancur was asked by reporter, Rafa Cotelo, to see one of the football shirts in the midfielder’s collection when the following exchange occurred:

Cotelo: ‘Your shirt… well, what about the Korean’s shirt?’

Bentancur: ‘Sonny?’

Cotelo: ‘Or a champion.’

Bentancur: ‘Or one of Sonny’s cousins as they all look more or less the

same.’

Tottenham are not appealing Bentancur’s guilty verdict but the club want the midfielder’s seven-game ban to be reduced.

In 2019, the FA increased the minimum ban for anyone found guilty of racist abuse to six matches.

Bentancur was given an additional match to the minimum six-game suspension as his comments were considered as an ‘aggravated breach’.

A statement from Tottenham read: ‘We can confirm that the Club has appealed against the length of Rodrigo Bentancur’s FA suspension, issued earlier this week.

‘While we accept the guilty finding against Rodrigo by the independent regulatory commission, we believe the subsequent sanction is severe.

‘Rodrigo will remain suspended from domestic competitions while the appeal is heard and the club will make no further comment during this time.’

Bentancur apologised for his comments as he wrote on social media: ‘Sonny brother! I apologise to you for what happened, it was just a very bad joke.

‘You know I love you and I would never disrespect you or hurt you or anyone else! I love you, brother!’

In his response to Bentancur’s apology, Son wrote: ‘He made a mistake, he knows this and has apologised.

‘Lolo would not mean to ever intentionally say something offensive. We are brothers and nothing has changed at all.’
