'Things weren't equal and balanced' - Postecoglou adamant Tottenham deserved win

Ange Postecoglou believes Tottenham should have beaten Newcastle United and would have done so if "all things were equal and balanced".

Spurs lost 2-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, with Newcastle coming from behind after Dominic Solanke's fourth-minute opener – Anthony Gordon scored 140 seconds later before Alexander Isak netted the winner before the break.

Spurs were visibly frustrated by Newcastle's equaliser, with a lengthy VAR check for a handball against Joelinton confirming the goal as the Brazilian's arm was by his side.

Postecoglou's side, who have now gone six league games without a home win for the first time since October 2008, also finished the game without a recognised centre-back after Radu Dragusin was removed at half-time due to injury.

"On the balance of play, any balance you want with all things being equal, we would have won," Posteocglou told BBC Sport.

"Outstanding. I couldn't be prouder of the players. I couldn't ask any more. It's a game we would have won if all things were equal.

"If all things were equal and balanced, we would have won. Things weren't equal and balanced."

When asked if it was Newcastle's first goal that was not equal, he added: "You can talk about whatever you want. You want my opinion - if all things were equal and balanced, we would have won.

"We had plenty of chances. Our football was outstanding considering everything we're going through.

Spurs struck the post in the second half through Brennan Johnson before substitute James Maddison and Solanke also went close.

They also had 13 shots to Newcastle's 14, with both teams managing four shots on target, though the hosts' 0.84 expected goals (xG) was slightly lower than their opponents' 1.08.

Due to the injury problems at the club, the average age of Postecoglou’s line-up on Saturday was 23 years and 336 days, their youngest starting XI for a Premier League game since they faced QPR in March 2015 (23y 290d).

Brandon Austin was also brought into the side for his first Premier League start, and Postecoglou was impressed with his performance.

Postecoglou's Spurs lose again after leading

Both sides scored within the opening six minutes at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where Isak won it with a 38th-minute goal.

The Swede pounced on Radu Dragusin's mistake to put Newcastle in front as Eddie Howe's side completed the turnaround after Solanke's opener.

Spurs' defensive issues came back to bite when Gordon restored parity just 140 seconds later and Isak then scored for a seventh league game running.

Spurs hit the post through Brennan Johnson after the break, before James Maddison's curling attempt flashed wide and Solanke sent a looping header onto the roof of the net late on.

Newcastle held firm and after a lengthy period of second-half stoppage-time, got over the line to consolidate its place in fifth, while Spurs remain in the bottom half.

Ange Postecoglou's side, which has now gone six league games without a home win for the first time since October 2008, also finished the game without a recognised centre-back after Radu Dragusin was removed at half-time with an injury.

"On the balance of play, any balance you want with all things being equal, we would have won," the Australian coach said.

"Outstanding. I couldn't be prouder of the players. I couldn't ask any more. It's a game we would have won if all things were equal.

Conversely morale is high at Newcastle and coach Howe is sure his side can continue building on its positive momentum.

"Confidence has definitely shifted, it naturally does when you win games," Howe said. "It was something we were building to.

Pereira in love with Postecoglou's Spurs style

Postecoglou's future has been called into question on the back of successive Premier League losses, seeing Spurs slip to 12th in the table.

Many have criticised the Australian's stubbornness with regards to altering his attacking style of play, but Pereira believes he should stick with it.

"I love it. I appreciate it a lot because we competed against each other in Asia," Pereira said. "He is a manager with different ideas.

"He has very offensive ideas and it means they are a team that can score a lot of goals.

"We need to be at our best level to compete with them. The game will be very hard for us."

Pereira is aiming to become the first Wolves boss to win his first three matches in the top flight, having so far beaten Leicester City and Manchester United since succeeding Gary O'Neil.

Those wins have lifted Wolves out of the relegation zone, while Spurs are now 11 points adrift of the top four after losing to Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

Tottenham is without at least eight players for the home clash with Wolves, but Postecoglou is bullish heading into 2025.

"Our league position is not great but it's super tight and we're not that far off," he said. "We're in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup and still in a great position in Europe and there's also the FA Cup.

"There's still everything to play for. For us this year to make it a season where we can have success, but we need some help.

Postecoglou eyeing Spurs reinforcements

Davies was one of three defenders missing from the 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest, with Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven also sidelined, but Spurs' issues were compounded when Radu Dragusin limped off with an ankle problem in the 87th minute.

Given the extent of the club's injury list, which also includes first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, Postecoglou conceded it may need to look to the transfer window to alleviate some of the issues.

"We're running a fine line," Postecoglou said. "There's always been issues at different times, but not to this extent.

"I think we've had close to pretty consistently 10 first-team players not available for a significant run of games. Definitely a first for me. We're in a tough spot, and we have been for a while.

"We've been kind of getting through it for quite a while and keeping our fingers crossed we don't get any more issues.

"[Transfer policy] can be disciplined, but we need a clear picture of where we're at. There is a need to reinforce if we can. It's not an easy time to do that in this window.

"The club is working hard behind the scenes to help the players we've got, who are giving everything in every game to try and get us through.

"We need to help some of these guys, because there's at least two or three who are feeling long-term injuries, so we're going to be short there. Others are coming back and need time to get up to speed. We're working hard to try to get reinforcements."

Against Forest, Spurs averaged more than 65 per cent possession for the seventh time in the Premier League this season, but they have lost five of those games.

Their defeat at The City Ground was their ninth in the Premier League this season, leaving them 11th on the table and 10 points behind rival Arsenal in fourth.

They now face Wolves at home, where they have conceded 31 goals in the league in 2024, the most Spurs have shipped in a single calendar year since 2007, when they let in 34.

With a Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool to come in January, Postecoglou insisted he still feels support from the fans, despite the increasing pressure.
