Nottingham Forest lineup vs. Tottenham: Predicted XI for Premier League clash

Nottingham Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo will be reuniting with the club he managed for 17 games when Tottenham Hotspur visit the City Ground for a Boxing Day Premier League battle.

The Tricky Trees are only expected to be missing three players when Spurs come to visit, as Danilo (ankle) and Ibrahim Sangare (hamstring) are continuing their recoveries, while Nicolas Dominguez is suspended.

Santo surprisingly tinkered with a successful formation against Brentford, bringing in an extra defender in the shape of Morato, which paid dividends to the maximum as Forest prevailed 2-0.

Given Tottenham's penchant for high-octane attacking play, the Forest boss may persist with that 3-4-2-1 shape, as Morato holds his place at the back alongside Nikola Milenkovic and Murillo.

Ola Aina should not be in any danger of dropping out either, but Santo did admit in his pre-game press conference that some players were carrying bumps and bruises, suggesting that some rotation could be on the cards.

Ryan Yates and Alex Moreno will likely benefit from any changes that are made, replacing Elliot Anderson and Neco Williams respectively, but Morgan Gibbs-White should reprise his midfield role.

Up top, Anthony Elanga will endeavour to score in three straight Premier League games for the first time, while Chris Wood already four Boxing Day goals to his name in the top flight - no player still active in the division has more.

Nottingham Forest possible starting lineup:

Sels; Morato, Murillo, Milenkovic; Aina, Yates, Gibbs-White, Moreno; Hudson-Odoi, Elanga; Wood

Nottingham Forest vs. Tottenham Hotspur: Head

Description

Occupying opposite positions to what many perhaps expected at the start of the season, Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur lock horns in a Premier League Boxing Day battle at the City Ground.

Nuno Espirito Santo's men still have their Champions League destiny in their own hands approaching the halfway mark, solidifying a fourth-placed ranking in the Premier League table courtesy of a 2-0 win at Brentford last time out.

Meanwhile, Spurs are still languishing in the bottom half of the standings owing to their engrossing 6-3 loss to Liverpool on Sunday evening, which left them eight points behind Thursday's hosts.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides.

© Imago

Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 125

Nott'm Forest wins: 37

Draws: 29

Spurs wins: 59

A total of 125 battles have now been fought between Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest, the former of whom boast the head-to-head superiority with 59 successes compared to 37 for the former European Cup winners.

Tottenham have built up their healthy lead over Forest in the victories column over the past 25 years in particular, as the North London crop have prevailed in eight of their last 10 meetings in all competitions, only suffering one loss in that sequence.

That sole defeat came at the City Ground in the 2022-23 EFL Cup third round, as Renan Lodi and Jesse Lingard condemned Spurs to another early elimination, but Tottenham have avenged that premature exit with three successive wins.

Ange Postecoglou's outfit did the double over Nuno Espirito Santo's team in the 2023-24 Premier League campaign, following up a 2-0 away triumph with a 3-1 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the latter of which was their sixth straight top-flight success over Forest.

The Tricky Trees have to go as far back as the previous millennium for their last Premier League win over Spurs, a 1-0 victory at White Hart Lane in 1997 thanks to a Dean Saunders goal, which also marked their ninth consecutive unbeaten game against Tottenham before their powers waned.

Many a cup contest has also been played out between Nottingham Forest and Tottenham down the years, but none more momentous than the 1991 FA Cup final, where Spurs triumphed 2-1 over the Garibaldi to win the competition for the eighth time.

With a staggering 12 goals to his name for Tottenham against Nottingham Forest, the late Jimmy Greaves has at least twice as many goals as any other player in this fixture; ex-Spurs winger Cliff Jones is second on the list with six.

Short-serving Tottenham Hotspur manager Nuno Espirito Santo seeks to prolong Spurs' festive misery on Boxing Day, when his Nottingham Forest side tackle the Lilywhites at the City Ground.

Eight points and seven places separate the two foes in the Premier League table at present, as the Garibaldi continue to enhance their Champions League credentials while Spurs languish in the lower echelons of the standings.

Channelling his inner Russell Crowe with his "are you not entertained" quip after Tottenham's enthralling EFL Cup quarter-final win over Manchester United, Postecoglou witnessed his troops put on another sensational spectacle for the neutrals against Liverpool, but he cut a much less affable figure afterwards.

The league leaders exposed Spurs' high line at will and never looked in danger of throwing away their healthy advantage despite a late defensive collapse, as Liverpool came out on the correct end of a 6-3 scoreline to condemn Tottenham to their fourth straight Premier League home game without a win.

As mesmerising and memorable as Tottenham can be under Postecoglou - both for the right and wrong reasons - the grim reality is that the Lilywhites will spend Christmas Day in the bottom half of the Premier League table, eight points adrift of the Champions League places.

Postecoglou's defiant claim that he "always" wins trophies in his second season may still ring true, but Spurs would have to get past Liverpool and then one of Arsenal or Newcastle United for that to happen in the EFL Cup, and their disheartening winter record reads three wins from their last 11 games in all competitions.

However, Spurs' never-say-die attitude in the visit of Liverpool saw them score at least three goals for the fourth time in their last five games, and Postecoglou's side are remarkably the joint-best defensive team on the road this season, only shipping eight Premier League goals on rival territory so far.

© Imago

Speaking of backlines excelling on the road, few could have foreseen Nottingham Forest quelling a goal-happy Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium fortress, where the Bees had scored a whopping 26 goals in just eight games prior to Saturday's game.

However, Thomas Frank's troops were stunted by Santo's Champions League chasers, who struck either side of the half-time whistle through Ola Aina and Anthony Elanga to end Brentford's unbeaten Premier League home record and register their third win in succession.

Showing few signs of faltering in their unexpected bid for elite European football, the fourth-placed Garibaldi have moved to within two points of Arsenal - whom they will overtake with victory on Boxing Day - while also opening up a four-point advantage over champions-in-crisis Manchester City.

Nine Premier League wins from 17 games is already as many as Forest managed in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 Premier League campaigns, and a 10th success of the season on Thursday would mark Forest's fourth Premier League win in a row; not since 1995 have they achieved that feat.

Santo should also require no added incentive to slay the side that sacked him just 17 games into his tenure in 2021, but Forest are on a six-game losing streak against Tottenham in the Premier League, going down in each of their last three at the City Ground without scoring.

Seven games later, Tottenham midfield fulcrum Rodrigo Bentancur is finally available for domestic fixtures again after his lengthy suspension, and Postecoglou has also confirmed that Destiny Udogie should be fine after he was restricted to a watching brief over the weekend.

However, the visitors still cannot call upon Guglielmo Vicario (ankle), Cristian Romero (thigh), Micky van de Ven (hamstring), Mikey Moore (illness), Wilson Odobert (hamstring), Richarlison (thigh) and Ben Davies (thigh), although the latter might be back for the Wolverhampton Wanderers clash on December 29.

As Bentancur has been kept ticking over in the Europa League during his domestic ban, Postecoglou should have no qualms about throwing him back in for Thursday's game, where Son Heung-min will aim to build on the four goals and two assists he has registered in previous Boxing Day matches.

While Tottenham will be welcoming a South American midfielder back from a ban, Nottingham Forest have lost one of their own to suspension, as Nicolas Dominguez was cautioned for the fifth time this season in the win over Brentford.

Dominguez was only a second-half substitute at the Gtech Community Stadium anyway, as Santo sprung a surprise by switching to a 3-4-2-1 shape, introducing Morato into the backline as Elliot Anderson and Morgan Gibbs-White formed an attack-minded midfield pairing.

Ryan Yates will expect to return for a tie of this magnitude, potentially in place of Anderson if Santo keeps faith with Morato in defence, but Danilo (ankle) and Ibrahim Sangare (hamstring) remain out.

Nottingham Forest possible starting lineup:

Sels; Morato, Murillo, Milenkovic; Aina, Yates, Gibbs-White, Moreno; Hudson-Odoi, Elanga; Wood

Tottenham Hotspur possible starting lineup:

Forster; Porro, Gray, Dragusin, Udogie; Bergvall, Bentancur; Kulusevski, Maddison, Son; Solanke

We say: Nottingham Forest 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham may be able to boast the Premier League's best defensive record away from home alongside Manchester United, but that will count for little against an inspired Forest side if their recent vulnerabilities are exposed once again.

Postecoglou's men can still fight fire with fire on their day, though, and Forest have seldom outplayed the Lilywhites in recent times, so another engrossing encounter may end with honours even.

Are Liverpool the most "complete" side in the Premier League?

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Liverpool's 6-3 victory against Tottenham Hotspur proves that the club are the most complete side in the Premier League, and their title rivals should fear them, according to Reds expert David Lynch.

Arne Slot's side got back to winning ways in the top flight when they triumphed away from home against Spurs, extending their lead over second-placed Chelsea at the top of the table to four points before Christmas despite having played a game less.

While the Merseysiders conceded three times, Tottenham could have easily lost by a much bigger margin such was the dominance of the Reds on Sunday, with the likes of Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai having produced numerous shots on goal.

Lynch told Sports Mole that he believes Liverpool's performance was their best of the season, saying: [Liverpool's showing was] arguably the best and most dominant performance they've put in so far this season - they just completely stood on Tottenham's neck, really controlled them, didn't look threatened at all.

"If you're any of the title rivals and you tuned in for that one, I don't even think you can take the three goals conceded as encouragement because it was just pure complacency [from Liverpool]. It wasn't structural issues, they just knew that they had the game won at that point.

"If you've watched that performance, if you're a title rival, you're worried because that looks like the most complete side in the Premier League at the moment."

Everton managed to hold Chelsea to a 0-0 draw on Sunday, and while Arsenal eventually brushed Crystal Palace aside on Saturday, the Gunners looked vulnerable in the first half and could have conceded more than once.

Analysed: Liverpool's dominance against Spurs

Ange Postecoglou's Spurs had struggled defensively in recent weeks, with goalkeeper Fraser Forster looking particularly out of place while the team's first-choice centre-backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven were both unavailable on Sunday due to injury.

Luis Diaz and Dominik Szoboszlai took full advantage of Tottenham's weaknesses in the backline, relentlessly pressing Radu Dragusin and Archie Gray, forcing the makeshift central defenders to make a number of mistakes.

When asked about Liverpool's best performers against Spurs, Lynch was particularly glowing in his review of Szoboszlai, telling Sports Mole: "It was hard to pick out your Man of the Match [but] I thought it was Szoboszlai, I thought he was fantastic. Covered so much ground - as he always does - but the way he was knitting the play, he was turning dirty possession into something [more promising] all the time.

"His goal typifies that - it's a bit of a hopeful flick forward and he gets on the end of it, and then he's the man who bursts into the box and finishes it really coolly. Gets an assist as well, and he just dominated Tottenham, ran all over them.

"These big games away from home are just tailor-made for him, with his ability to get all over the pitch. It's almost like having an extra man in attack and defence at times, because his energy is so great. We're starting to see that end product from him as well, which is really welcome because we've known for a while he's got that in him."

Szoboszlai's intensity without the ball has never been in question during his time at Anfield, and though he came under scrutiny for his performances earlier this campaign, he proved on Sunday exactly why Slot rates him so highly.

Can Liverpool be caught?

When Slot took charge of the club, many observers suggested that the Dutchman might have understandably struggled given the success previous manager Jurgen Klopp had with the Reds, winning the Champions League and Premier League during his tenure.

However, Liverpool are first in both the Champions League and Premier League tables and have lost just once in their 25 matches under the new boss, winning 21 times.

The Reds have also scored the joint most goals and conceded the joint fewest in the top flight, and Lynch expressed his belief to Sports Mole that Liverpool will be confident of winning the title, saying: "If you are watching that and you're a Chelsea fan or an Arsenal fan, it's just a concern because you've got an entire team there playing really well.

"We're getting towards Christmas now, and this is where really you try and kick on and get the title won, and Liverpool have got a decent-looking fixture list coming up, so it's looking ominous for their rivals.

"City have fallen off completely, but Liverpool have stepped into that void that's been left [and are] the only team who are performing at a 90-plus points level, which says a lot about how good they are."

After spending Christmas Day in the bottom half of the Premier League table, Tottenham Hotspur endeavour to atone for recent failings when they travel to Nottingham Forest for a Boxing Day battle.

Ange Postecoglou's men put on a spectacle for the neutrals in Sunday's showdown with Liverpool, but the home crowd left dejected as their side fell to an enthralling 6-3 defeat to the league leaders.

With 17 games gone in the 2024-25 campaign, Spurs are entrenched in the middle of the standings, currently residing in 11th place with an eight-point gap to the Champions League positions.

Here, Sports Mole rounds up Tottenham's latest injury and suspension news ahead of their clash with the Tricky Trees, who occupy the final spot in the top four thanks to their magnificent start to the campaign.

Status: Out

Type of injury: Illness

Possible return date: Unknown

Mikey Moore has spent a month and a half on the sidelines with an unspecified, serious illness, and even though he is now back in training, he is not being rushed back into action and should sit out the trip to Forest too.

Ben Davies

Game of the season: Leaders Liverpool tear Tottenham apart in nine

Submitted by daniel on
Picture

Description

Liverpool will spend Christmas Day four points clear at the top of the Premier League table thanks to a breathtaking 6-3 win over Tottenham Hotspur in North London.

Taking advantage of Tottenham's depleted defence in the first 45, Liverpool deservedly raced ahead through Luis Diaz and Alexis Mac Allister's headers before James Maddison gave the hosts a flicker of optimism with a fine finish.

That hope was quickly eradicated when Dominik Szoboszlai restored the Reds' two-goal advantage, and as Tottenham failed to learn their defensive lessons from the first half, Mohamed Salah helped himself to the brace that made him Liverpool's fourth-highest goalscorer in history.

Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke managed to reduce the arrears for a never-say-die Tottenham, but the die was cast when Diaz struck his second of the evening, capping off one of the most extraordinary matches in the history of the Premier League.

Arne Slot's side travel home for Christmas with an unassailable lead at the summit, while also holding a game in hand on all of their title rivals, but volatile Spurs - whose commitment to always providing entertainment cannot be knocked - will spend the festivities in the bottom half of the rankings.

SPORTS MOLE'S VERDICT

As Postecoglou said on Thursday evening - are you not entertained?

Having been handed a massive title boost less than an hour before kickoff, as closest challengers Chelsea were held to a goalless draw by Everton, the onus was on Slot's machine to rise to the challenge in North London.

Barring a late defensive collapse, the Reds passed with flying colours and looked capable of scoring every time they surged forward, thanks in part to their scintillating attacking play and Tottenham's dreadful rearguard performance.

Managers never like to publicly discuss the standings at the mid-point of the season, but Slot and his charges will surely allow themselves to revel in their magnificent position, and it would be nothing short of catastrophic if they were to blow the title now.

On the other side of the coin, mid-table Tottenham put in an abysmal defensive display akin to their 4-1 loss to Chelsea last year, albeit with 11 men on the pitch rather than nine, and Postecoglou's persistence with the high line against the devastating Reds was an extremely difficult watch.

The Australian may come out with the old "that is just who we are" when grilled by the press, but a failure to change tack when one approach is not working is what got Russell Martin sacked from Southampton.

Postecoglou's situation is nowhere near as dire yet, and their late attacking show offers some solace, but a team of their calibre should never be shipping six goals at home no matter who they are up against.

TOTTENHAM VS. LIVERPOOL HIGHLIGHTS

Luis Diaz goal vs. Tottenham (23rd min, Tottenham 0-1 Liverpool)

Tottenham cannot say it was not coming! Diaz gets the goal, but this one is all about the delivery from Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has just boosted his chances of securing a massive pay rise in his new contract.

The England international sends in a devastating cross from the right-hand side, which Diaz makes a brilliant run to meet, and the Colombia international sends his header back across goal and into the far side of the net.

Alexis Mac Allister goal vs. Tottenham (36th min, Tottenham 0-2 Liverpool)

Another cross, another goal! Fraser Forster put in a horror show of a performance in midweek, and the Spurs goalkeeper does not cover himself in glory here either.

This time the outswinging delivery comes from Andy Robertson in the left half-space; Szoboszlai competes with Archie Gray and Djed Spence in the air, and the ball loops up in the corridor of uncertainty.

Forster comes off his line, but Mac Allister beats him to it and heads into the top corner with the goalkeeper in no man's land

James Maddison goal vs. Liverpool (41st min, Tottenham 1-2 Liverpool)

A lifeline, but for how long? Kulusevski and Mac Allister get in a tangle on the ground, and Spurs come away with the ball as Liverpool's pleas for a foul fall on deaf ears.

Maddison has time and space to pick his spot from inside the D and curls a beautiful finish into the bottom corner with Alisson Becker rooted to the spot. Virgil van Dijk furiously remonstrates with referee Sam Barrott, who is unmoved.

Dominik Szoboszlai goal vs. Tottenham (45+1 min, Tottenham 1-3 Liverpool)

As a Tottenham fan, it is the hope that kills you. Liverpool strike straight back, as Szoboszlai flicks on a long ball over Radu Dragusin's head, and Liverpool have a four-on-two with Salah leading the charge.

The Egyptian picks the correct pass as he slips in Szoboszlai, who had continued his run and takes one touch before coolly slotting home into the middle of the goal through Forster's legs.

Role reversal of sorts from Liverpool's third goal, and Salah has yet another landmark goal in a Liverpool jersey!

Cody Gakpo's cutback from the left is cut out by Gray, who also manages to get in the way of Szoboszlai's weak effort while both men are on the ground, but his weak interception falls at the feet of Salah.

The 32-year-old has the simplest task of tapping in from a couple of yards out for his 228th Liverpool goal, level with Billy Liddell for the fourth most in the Reds' history.

No sooner had Salah gone level with Liddell in Liverpool's all-time goalscoring charts to overtaking him!

The same combination is involved for the third time in a row, as Szoboszlai controls a fizzed pass with a top touch and unselfishly feeds Salah, who has another empty net to stroke home into.

The true definition of a demolition job.

One of the most well-executed volleys you will see in this season's Premier League, but surely not one that will count for anything.

Kulusevski and Solanke link up well on the edge of the box, and the latter finds the Swede's run with a delicate ball over the top, which Kulusevski finishes off with a terrific first-time strike.

Hello hello, is the unthinkable on the cards?

Brennan Johnson gets above Robertson to head a cross back into the mixer, and Solanke turns well to evade the attention of Van Dijk before prodding home the eighth goal of the evening.

Luis Diaz goal vs. Tottenham (85th min, Tottenham 3-6 Liverpool)

The unthinkable is not on the cards.

Diaz has his second goal of the evening, and Salah has his second assist of the evening, slipping in his South American colleague to fire in Liverpool's sixth across goal from a tight angle.

MAN OF THE MATCH - MOHAMED SALAH

Gary Neville may have sided with fellow two-goal attacker Diaz, who was an equally worthy candidate for the man of the match award, but Liverpool's fourth highest scorer in history gets our vote.

Salah's two goals may have been two of the more simpler finishes he will have in a Reds jersey, but the Egypt international also laid on two smart assists and was too hot to handle for the Tottenham backline all evening.

The best player in the world? Maybe. Worthy of that lucrative new Liverpool deal he so desires? Absolutely.

TOTTENHAM VS. LIVERPOOL MATCH STATS

Shots on target: Tottenham 5-12 Liverpool

WHAT NEXT?

After celebrating December 25 at the summit of the standings, Liverpool get back to work on Boxing Day, when Leicester City are the visitors to Anfield.

Meanwhile, Postecoglou's depleted Tottenham are also returning to action on December 26 away to Nottingham Forest, who ought to be licking their lips after Spurs' sorry defensive performance on Sunday.

Tottenham Hotspur vs. Liverpool: Arne Slot to beat Ange Postecoglou, maintain Premier League title race lead

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Liverpool must take advantage of Tottenham Hotspur's considerable weaknesses and will be confident of victory on Sunday according to Reds expert David Lynch.

Arsenal's victory against Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon saw the Gunners close the gap to Arne Slot's Merseysiders to just three points, though the Dutchman's team do have two games in hand.

More positively for the Reds, Pep Guardiola's Manchester City succumbed to a 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa, effectively knocking the champions out of the title race.

Ange Postecoglou's Spurs side stand in the way of another three points for Liverpool, but Lynch believes that the Reds should be very confident of victory, telling Sports Mole: "I think Liverpool will go into this one with a lot of confidence that they can hurt spurs.

"The big problem [Spurs have] got is that [their] defensive issues and structural issues are repeatedly being exposed. When Arne Slot and coaches look through the analysts' work and have a look at how they can hurt Tottenham, there are about 50 different ways to do it because they have structural issues in the way that they press that allows them to be passed through quite easily.

"They're a team with serious weaknesses and if Liverpool go there and show the best versions of themselves, they'll feel like they can really hurt Tottenham and get a big result."

The two sides will also meet each other in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup next year, and Sunday's game could perhaps be an insight into how the tie will play out.

Tottenham's defensive vulnerabilities

Spurs beat Manchester United 4-3 in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup on Thursday, but while Postecoglou's side were excellent in the final third, their defensive display was alarming.

First-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, as well as first-choice centre-backs Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, missed out against United, with Fraser Forster filling in between the posts while Archie Gray and Radu Dragusin started in the heart of defence.

Forster was at fault for at least two of United's goals while Gray is arguably a more natural midfielder, and Lynch told Sports Mole that the Reds are capable of exploiting those vulnerabilities, saying: "Tottenham are one of those teams that on their day, at their best, they're up there with the best in the league. They can beat anyone in the league when they're at their best, but those defensive deficiencies - Liverpool will be absolutely licking their lips at this game.

"An underrated element of some of their struggles at the moment is they've got a few injuries. [Rodrigo Bentancur] out through suspension, injuries to Vicario in goal and some issues in central defence as well - Van de Ven.

"That's another reason why they look so porous at the moment and none of those players are going to be back for the Liverpool game, so it's just an opportunity to hurt them when they're at a low ebb."

Mohamed Salah will almost certainly be thrilled at the prospect of playing against Spurs' makeshift defence, and he will be confident of adding to the 12 goals and two assists he has registered against Tottenham.

Pressure in the title race?

As commanding as Liverpool have been this season, Chelsea could leapfrog the Reds and climb to first place should they beat Everton on Sunday, and while Liverpool would be able to reclaim top spot with a victory against Spurs, beating Tottenham could be a tough challenge.

Slot's side should still undoubtedly be classed as favourites for the title given they have only lost once in all competitions this season, but despite City's collapse, fans are still worried that they may be caught.

However, Lynch dismissed the notion that Liverpool will be feeling pressure ahead of their clash against Tottenham, arguing that the relatively small gap to the likes of Chelsea does not paint a full picture of the state of the race for the Premier League.

Speaking to Sports Mole, Lynch said: "Liverpool shouldn't be feeling pressure around [the points gap] because ultimately a big part of the gap going from nine points to two - or potentially being erased completely - is the fact that they had a game called off and others around them continued to play. Realistically, if Liverpool were level on games with Chelsea, that that gap would [likely] be five points now.

"At this point, it is just about can you win the next game that's in front of you, and that will absolutely be the focus going into the Tottenham game. I'm not sure they'll be paying too much attention to Chelsea.

"Even if the are [paying attention], there are weaknesses there in Chelsea that suggest that they won't be able to keep this pace up for long, so I don't think they should be too worried about that one."

Chelsea have kept just one clean sheet in their last 11 Premier League fixtures, but regardless of whether the Blues manage to pick up three points against Everton, Slot's side must focus on their own match against Spurs.

Tottenham Hotspur vs. Liverpool: Mohamed Salah's record against Spurs ahead of Premier League clash

Liverpool can guarantee top spot in the Premier League table on Christmas Day by defeating Tottenham Hotspur in Sunday's showdown, where a well-rested Mohamed Salah should return to the Reds' XI.

The Egypt international was given the night off as Arne Slot's men conquered Southampton 2-1 in the EFL Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday, allowing Harvey Elliott to shine in his absence as the English youngster made the net bulge at St Mary's.

However, Elliott will no doubt cede his spot to Salah as the 32-year-old bids to either score or set up a teammate for the ninth Premier League game in a row, having brought up 100 assists for Liverpool in last weekend's 2-2 draw with Fulham with a magnificent cross for Cody Gakpo to head home.

Here, Sports Mole takes a closer look at Salah's record against Tottenham ahead of Sunday's top-flight battle.

Played: 20

Won: 12

Drawn: 5

Lost: 3

Goals: 12

Assists: 2

One of Mohamed Salah's favourite teams to play against in terms of individual goal contributions, the Liverpool winger has been directly involved in 14 strikes from 20 previous matches against Tottenham Hotspur in all competitions.

The 32-year-old has only laid on two assists against Spurs, but he has found the back of the net against them 12 times, his joint second-highest total against a single opponent - level with West Ham United and Manchester City and only behind his 15 against Manchester United.

Salah has also been involved in an identical number of wins against Spurs, losing three and drawing his other five meetings with the Lilywhites, whom he began to haunt long before he made a name for himself in the Premier League.

Indeed, Salah's first goal against Tottenham came when he was playing for Basel in the quarter-finals of the 2012-13 Europa League, and he also struck against Spurs in the same competition for Fiorentina during the 2014-15 campaign.

After returning to English soil with Liverpool, Salah scored in both Premier League meetings with Tottenham during the 2017-18 season - one away and a brace at home - but Jurgen Klopp's team failed to win either contest.

The winger did not manage a goal or assist in either Premier League scrap in 2018-19, but he set the wheels in motion in the Champions League final later that year, stroking home from the penalty spot before Divock Origi sealed the deal.

More recently, Salah scored and assisted in Liverpool's 4-2 home win over Spurs towards the end of the 2023-24 campaign, and he also netted three times against the Lilywhites in the 2022-23 top-flight season.

Should the Liverpool winger set up one goal on Sunday, he would reach double figures for both goals and assists in the 2024-25 top-flight season already; no player has ever achieved those numbers before Christmas in a single Premier League campaign.

Tottenham Hotspur vs. Liverpool: Head

Closing out the pre-Christmas Premier League action, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool scrap for supremacy in Sunday's tantalising tie at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The two giants of the English game collide just after being drawn to face one another in the EFL Cup semi-finals, which Spurs reached thanks to an astonishing 4-3 win over Manchester United after Arne Slot's side eked out a 2-1 success over managerless Southampton.

Nine places separate Liverpool and Spurs in the Premier League rankings at the time of writing, though, as the Reds sit two points clear of Chelsea in first place while Ange Postecoglou's team languish in 10th position.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides.

Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 183

Spurs wins: 49

Draws: 44

Liverpool wins: 90

Five of the first six meetings between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool in the early 20th century may have been won by the Lilywhites, but the mammoths from Merseyside have since built up a dominant streak over their capital counterparts in this battle.

Indeed, the Reds have prevailed in 90 of the 183 competitive meetings between the two clubs down the years while only suffering 49 defeats, and another 44 scraps have ended in a share of the spoils.

However, one of those 49 losses for Liverpool came at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the 2023-24 season, albeit in highly infuriating circumstances, as Luis Diaz's goal was incorrectly disallowed by virtue of a "significant human error" before Joel Matip turned into his own net in added time.

Jurgen Klopp's crop avenged that cruel defeat with a 4-2 triumph at Anfield towards the end of the season, though, which marked Liverpool's 10th win from their last 13 matches against Tottenham; the only other aberrations for the Reds in that sequence were a pair of draws in the 2021-22 Premier League season.

Liverpool and Spurs have met exclusively in the Premier League since Klopp's crop also conquered Mauricio Pochettino's team in the 2018-19 Champions League final, where Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi broke Lilywhites hearts, and there have only been two wins for Spurs in the last 23 top-flight head-to-heads.

Furthermore, Liverpool are on a 17-game scoring streak against the North London outfit in the Premier League since last being shut out in a goalless draw in October 2015, which was Klopp's inaugural match in the Reds hotseat.

That drab affair also marks the last time that Tottenham and Liverpool played out a 0-0 stalemate, and entertainment at both ends is usually a guarantee between these two sides, as the last eight meetings have seen both teams score.

Speaking of goals, Spurs legend Jimmy Greaves and Liverpool icon Ian Rush lead the way in terms of individual goals in this head-to-head with 11 apiece, but current Reds hotshot Salah is on the cusp of matching that record, having struck 10 times against the Lilywhites in the past.
