Is Tottenham centre-back Cristian Romero injured? Premier League injury update

Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat to Ipswich followed by a 4-0 win over Manchester City personified Ange Postecoglou’s time as Tottenham manager. Imposing attacking displays have gone hand in hand with intriguing, and often poor, defensive high-lines.

This mix leaves them sixth in the Premier League, but they are only four points off second-placed Manchester City.

As Premier League injuries mount up, City do not look the same side as of late, but that does not take away from a stellar Spurs performance, especially as they were missing first choice centre-backs Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven.

Is Cristian Romero injured this weekend?

No side has scored more goals in the league this season than Spurs, and they have also conceded the joint third-least number of goals, despite only keeping three clean sheets.

Argentinian centre-back Romero is key to the way Spurs’ play, offering ball-playing ability and a serious threat at set pieces.

Romero has played 11 of Spurs’ 12 league games this season, missing the Manchester City match after suffering an injury blow while on international break. Romero had been substituted off against Aston Villa with an injury issue, but returned in time to play 90 minutes in Spurs’ 2-1 defeat to Ipswich.

This injury seems to have flared up in Argentina’s World Cup Qualifier against Paraguay, with Ange Postecoglou confirming prior to the Manchester City match that Romero would not be available.

Postecoglou, who ranked at no.36 in FourFourTwo's list of the best managers in the world right now, said: “Romero won't be right for tomorrow's game.

“We're hoping he'll be right for next week.”

Spurs face Roma in the Europa League this Thursday and it seems unlikely that Romero will return then, given Ben Davies and Radu Dragusin’s impressive performance against Manchester City.

Tottenham to sign replacement for star out for the rest of the year: report

Tottenham Hotspur may be forced to make a shock move in the January window that would not have been part of their pre-season planning.

A fairly mixed start to the Premier League season sees the north London club in sixth, but with a number of teams in touching distance above them.

Not then, perhaps, the time for any knee-jerk moves, but recent injury news means Ange Postecoglou’s side may be forced to make a headline change to their starting squad.

Tottenham may be forced to replace goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario in January

It has been revealed that Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has just undergone surgery to repair a fractured ankle.

The Italy international was hurt in a challenge with Savinho in Spurs’ resounding 4-0 win against Manchester City at the Etihad, and was still complaining about being in pain following the final whistle. It later transpired that he had been playing for around an hour with the fracture.

It will likely leave Spurs hunting for a replacement gloveman, with Vicario out for months rather than weeks, and the club having already been considering bolstering their goalkeeping ranks in the summer, according to the Telegraph.

Postecoglou will need to rely on Fraser Forster, but thankfully the 36-year-old shouldn’t be as rusty as some back-up goalkeepers may be, having appeared three times already this season; twice in the Europa League and once in Carabao Cup against Coventry City.

The Tottenham boss will not, however, have intended to rest his entire season on the shoulders of Forster, and will likely want to enter the market in January.

In a statement on Instagram, Vicario said: “Unfortunately, there was no way around this one. I needed surgery. I’m disappointed I won’t be able to help the team for a while.”

In FourFourTwo’s opinion, Tottenham will need to go all out in January to sign a new goalkeeper, especially with their summer plans revealing they already felt light in the area.

January signings are never cheap, with the need to pay a premium to disrupt another side’s squad planning. The very public knowledge of Spurs’ quite desperate situation will only aggravate that, but we all know how much Daniel Levy loves driving a hard bargain.

How Tottenham really beat Manchester City 4-0 - and how James Maddison turned on the style

The grin did not leave Tottenham Hotspur star James Maddison’s face for the entirety of his 28th birthday.

Not when intelligent movement led to him scoring goals one and two of a 4-0 battering of Manchester City. Not when he was smashed and clattered to the sodden Etihad turf ground by Kyle Walker, Manuel Akanji, Bernardo Silva or Ilkay Gundogan. Not when he was withdrawn several minutes shy of the end, surrendering the captain’s armband he had been passed a short while earlier, and receiving a warm reception from Ange Postecoglou.

And certainly not when he later stood in front of three tiers of delirious Tottenham Hotspur supporters, both fists clenched in celebration, before passing his soaked shirt to a travelling youngster.

Tottenham terrorised Manchester City, with James Maddison at the heart of it all

Where to begin? With their first home defeat in 52, Manchester City have now lost five on the spin – plenty of those present on Saturday will not have followed the club the last time that happened (2006 under Stuart Pearce). Crisis? Hmmm. A stretch. But title race? Well, even Pep Guardiola admitted that being 11 off the pace, which City could be post-Anfield next Sunday, would be too much.

But let City’s (relative) woes not distract from Tottenham. Thrash Aston Villa; hand Ipswich Town a first top-flight victory in decades. Lose at Crystal Palace; hammer City on the road. All very #Spursy right?!

Postecoglou had many a fine performer. Son Heung-min virtually gave Kyle Walker his ‘Gary Neville at the Hawthorns’ moment. Vicario was outstanding between the sticks. Dejan Kulusevski was even better from wide right, but then again, he has been since August.

It was, though, a Maddison day. But for Rodrigo Bentancur’s seven-match suspension for using a racial slur about teammate Son, Maddison may well have started on the bench – a position he has occupied for the past few weeks and a far cry from 12 months back when he was being hailed as one of the division’s finest. Spurs had temporarily topped the Premier League, and their playmaker was making them tick. A three-month injury stymied Maddison’s progress, but he still had a more than passable first campaign in north London.

To succeed as a No.10 now, though, a drop of the shoulder, a few flicks of the wand, does not suffice in the same way it did, say, a decade back. The modern way is to play more as an eight, with both lung-busting darts and defensive duties part of the package.

A few weeks back, during a victory over West Ham, Maddison was withdrawn with the scores level at half-time despite getting an assist. In Spurs’ last two league games, he has played just 16 minutes. A few judges, some with plenty of football nous, had even suggested that, as fine a footballer as Maddison is, Tottenham might be better without him moving forward. If that felt premature, that is perhaps because it was.

It was obvious almost immediately on Saturday that Maddison was in the mood. Early on, he attempted to lead Spurs’ press but turned to see no one following. His frustration was visible, as was Postecoglou’s.

And that was Maddison for the entire match. Pointing. Conducting. Asking more, and more, still of his teammates. Madison won the most fouls (five) and duels (nine) of anyone on the pitch. His first goal came from a wonderful Kulusevski cross, while the second was a deft finish after a clever loop around Son’s back.

Postecoglou: “Maddison's had a decent season… but we want more than that”

“The thing about Madders was he obviously didn't go away on international duty,” Postecoglou told reporters afterwards. “He had two weeks with us and the coaches worked really hard with him and he was working really hard at training, and I could just see and said he was ready for a big game.

“He hasn't sort of lowered his ambitions or his kind of levels of the kind of player he wants to be and it's about us giving him that platform and it wasn't just his goals today. I thought he was really important for us in the build-up because he was always looking for it in tight areas and, and defensively, he worked really hard.

“So, yeah, credit to him. Like I said, I still think he's had a decent season, but it's like us as a team, we want to be more than that, we want to be more than just a decent team.”

As for Maddison himself, what he has in excess is character and personality. His self-confidence is evident – he previously said he loves to be the main man at family Sunday roasts – but he navigates successfully around arrogance.

“I’m never happy when I don’t play but I’ve been all right,” he told Sky Sports post-match. “I’ve got a lot of self-belief and if I go through tough spells, I’m able to think, ‘I’ll show you that the team is much better with me in it.’ Not in an arrogant way, but you need that self-belief to get out of a rut. I’m really happy and proud that I bounced back today and showed my leadership.”

Saturday had been set up as an afternoon of celebration for City. There was both Guardiola’s extended contract and Rodri’s Ballon d'Or to shout about. The latter spectacle was as magnificent as it was monstrous.

Presumably having blown the budget on neon signs and a pitch-sized tarpaulin, there was nothing left to spend on someone to present the Spaniard with his golden globe. And so instead he meandered alone to the middle to lift his own trophy with the awkwardness of a scratch card winner claiming their £1 prize from the cashier. That was to be City’s last joyous moment.

Tottenham have these evenings, spells of 90 minutes when big Ange can do no wrong. But they also have another mask. Fulham, who head to the Seven Sisters Road next weekend, will doubtless be licking their lips.

Tottenham star now 'ostracised' as exit looms: report

Tottenham Hotspur have endured a turbulent start to their second season under manager Ange Postecoglou, finding consistent performances hard to come by in the early knockings of the campaign.

The North London outfit currently sit 10th in the Premier League, having lost five of their opening 11 league games topped off by a disappointing home defeat to Ipswich Town before the international break.

Issues spread away from the field after midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur was handed a seven-match ban for racially motivated comments made over the summer regarding Heung-Min Son and his South Korean teammates.

Tottenham star now 'ostracised' as exit looms

Another player facing issues at the club is forgotten man Sergio Reguilon, who has failed to make a single appearance in any competition since returning from his loan at Brentford over the summer.

The Spaniard, who joined the club in a €30 million move from Real Madrid in 2020, has endured a number of loan moves in recent years, most notably to Manchester United in the first half of last season.

According to Marca, the defender's absence from the matchday squad has led to his feeling 'ostracised' at the club, opening up the possibility of a January move.

Despite a number of good performances during his six-month spell at Brentford, the Spaniard has failed to win over Postecoglou, who has since omitted him from all but one matchday squad this season - naming him as an unused substitute in the EFL Cup against Coventry City.

His place in the squad was further confirmed earlier in the season when Postecoglou told reporters: “He’s a Spurs player, mate. I mean, we’ve got a training session so it’s a balance that we need 20 players for training, that’s what we do for match day minus one. It didn’t make sense to bring someone like Radu [Dragusin, suspended] or a couple of guys who have got injuries because we won’t get back until late on Thursday.

“We’ve brought a couple of young guys in. The academy played last night and we didn’t want to disrupt that, but we brought a couple of young guys and Reguilon to make sure our training is really good today."

The 27-year-old is expected to draw interest from Spain if a move is to materialise, having spent loan spells at Sevilla and Atletico Madrid in recent years to varying levels of success.

His current contract is set to expire at the end of the season, meaning a departure now seems a foregone conclusion whether in January or the summer.

Arsenal and Tottenham striker target given transfer outcome: report

Arsenal and Tottenham both know where they stand in their hunt for a new centre-forward.

Both North London clubs have been actively looking to improve their striking department with Dominic Solanke recruited by Spurs earlier this year. Arsenal haven't been as lucky, with Kai Havertz often utilised in forward areas for the Gunners this season.

With the January transfer window approaching, Premier League clubs will already be preparing their approaches in regards to squad improvements, but one player from Ligue 1 is set to stay put despite interest from elsewhere in Europe.

Jonathan David will not leave Lille in January, says club president Oliver Letang

As relayed by Fabrizio Romano, Lille striker Jonathan David will not be moving elsewhere this winter, with the 24-year-old set to decide on his future in the summer, despite being a free agent.

David has 13 goals already in France this season and it is thought both Arsenal and Tottenham have in the past shown an interest in signing the talented Canadian on a permanent basis.

“We’re very happy to have him,” Lille President Letang said of David via AfterRMC. “This summer he had one year left on his contract. But we were under no pressure to sell him.”

“That was also because we didn’t receive any suitable offers. We’ve already offered him a contract extension,” Letang added. “And now the ball is in his court.”

“But David will not leave during the January window. Jonathan loves this club, and it’s his home.”

The talented forward has also in the past been asked about his future, admitting he would one day like to play in England.

"My future? Focused on getting this great club back to Europe where it belongs. The rest will come," he said. "Premier League? One of the best leagues in the world, why not?"

In FourFourTwo's view, David looks likely to leave France in the summer but to where remains a huge mystery. Newcastle United could be an option, especially if they go on to lose Alexander Isak amid issues regarding a new contract.

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min primed for exit, with transfer talks on the horizon: report

Tottenham Hotspur club captain Son Heung-min is edging closer to an exit from the Lilywhites.

Ranked at No.3 in FourFourTwo's list of the best Premier League wingers of all time, the South Korean superstar joined Tottenham from Bayer Leverkusen back in 2015. He has since gone on to score over 100 league goals for the club and has been one of the Spurs' greatest-ever servants.

But now approaching the end of his contract – and turning 33 next summer – Son's future is under threat. Chairman Daniel Levy is renowned for his ruthlessness, even with club legends… so could Son be the next victim of Spurs' evolution?

Tottenham Hotspur's Son Heung-min wanted in shock January move

Tottenham are currently 10th in the Premier League table. Manager Ange Postecoglou is under pressure at the club, with Son's future another cloud over the club at the moment, too.

Recent reports claim that Tottenham will not offer the No.7 a new deal when his current one expires, instead triggering a one-year extension to keep him on the same wages.

Now, Turkish outlet Fanatik have reported that Galatasaray are keen to open talks with Son over a shock move.

The Istanbul giants have let former Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha leave on loan to cash-strapped Lyon, and despite boasting the on-loan Victor Osimhen in attack – ranked at no.5 in FourFourTwo's list of the best strikers in the world right now – are still on the hunt for a left-winger in January.

Sport Witness notes that Son is “unhappy” about his current club situation, noting, “It’s claimed Cimbom are hoping that they can enter into preliminary transfer talks with the Tottenham star in the near future.”

In FourFourTwo's opinion, however, there is little chance of the attacker departing this winter.

Tottenham will be loathed to lose a player midseason when he is still integral to the side – and with the opportunity to trigger an extension, the club stand to make more money from a sale in the summer, should they wish to move him on at all.

Tottenham unveil new logo - and everyone's saying the same thing

Tottenham Hotspur have made a surprise change to the club emblem as part of an ongoing club rebrand.

The change, while only subtle, alters the logo that has been used for the past two decades and represents their wider heritage.

Spurs are far from the only Premier League side to change their badge in recent years, with Aston Villa, Manchester City and others making significant alterations. But the change has already left some fans uninspired.

Why have Tottenham changed their club logo?

The club have removed the Tottenham Hotspur text from underneath the cockerel which features on the badge. In addition, the objects now appear in a darker shade of colour to complete the new look.

In a statement, the club said: "Welcome to our remastered brand identity, embracing our rich history and unmistakable heritage.

"Created with the input of over 300 players, staff and fans to fully understand what Tottenham Hotspur means to them, our new identity enables a more playful, daring approach for the Club’s brand across the multitude of platforms on which it now features, with a particular focus on clarity in digital environments.

"The world-famous cockerel stands prouder than ever and is supported by a silhouette version, along with the reintroduction of the THFC monogram and new colours, patterns and hallmarks linked to the club’s heritage."

The new logo has had a mixed response, with some supporters on X (formerly Twitter) describing the rebrand as “pointless”. Plenty of fans have noted how the cockerel looks almost identical, as the rebrand is

Spurs originally changed the club badge back in 2006, with an aim of modernising the club's image. This saw the previous heraldic shield design removed, with a sleeker logo featuring the cockerel standing on an old-time football widely welcomed as a replacement.

VIDEO Why Man United Wanted Ruben Amorim So Badly

Spurs aren't the only club undergoing a redesign of their club badge. Ajax announced earlier this week that they would be returning to their original, detailed design, which served the club until 1990 - a decision that received a popular response from fans.

In FourFourTwo's view Tottenham should be commended for consulting fans before making changes that can impact the club's wider identity. However, in this case the changes to the logo are so minimal, the rebrand appears unnecessary.

Tottenham v Arsenal: How to watch WSL North London derby

Description

Tottenham v Arsenal will see the Women's Super League North London derby held at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.

The match will be an interesting one as the Gunners are in the ascendency in terms of their results after a tricky start to the season.

And while Spurs have inconsistent form this campaign, they proved last season they are more than capable of upsetting their rivals.

Tottenham v Arsenal: Who will claim bragging rights?

Fans will be able to watch the match on BBC One, BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website.

Supporters from outside the UK will be able to access the match via a VPN.

Last season Tottenham beat Arsenal for the first time in the league with a 1-0 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It was an impressive performance and one that added to Arsenal's disappointing league results which meant they were not in the title race come the end of the campaign.

However, both clubs are in very different spots in the current season. The Gunners have had their manager Jonas Eidevall resign and his departure has seen a return of form to the club.

They are on an unbeaten run and their last two results have seen a 5-0 win over Brighton in the WSL and a 4-0 victory against Juventus in the Women's Champions League.

The permanent manager replacement for Eidevall has not yet been confirmed but interim boss Renee Slegers is most definitely putting her hand up for it.

Spurs, meanwhile, have only managed to record two wins in the league so far this season.

Those victories came against newly promoted Crystal Palace and West Ham. Their other results have seen a draw against Aston Villa and losses to Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City.

In FourFourTwo's view Spurs are not clicking together as a team yet and once that happens they will start to get more results. However, it is difficult to see them coming away with a win this weekend with Arsenal in such good form.

In terms of team news, Mariona Caldentey did miss Arsenal's game against Brighton with muscle strain but she played midweek in the Women's Champions League so she should be available this weekend.

Tottenham, meanwhile, do not have any fresh injury news.

Tottenham to solve ongoing defensive issues with £50m Premier League addition: report

Tottenham Hotspur are said to have identified a perfect defensive addition to solve their ongoing injury issues.

Micky van de Ven - ranked at no.86 in FourFourTwo's list of the best players in the world right now - is once again sidelined for Tottenham after suffering a hamstring injury in their recent Carabao Cup victory over Manchester City.

Cristian Romero has partened the relatively in-experienced Radu Dragusin in the meantime but that has prompted manager Ange Postecoglou to enquiry as to who is available in the market this January.

Tottenham and Chelsea want to sign Bournemouth defender Illia Zabarnyi

Bournemouth defender Illia Zabarnyi is continuing to attract interest from across the Premier League, with it now being reported by Caught Offside that both Chelsea and Tottenham are showing an interest in the 22-year-old.

Zabarnyi joined the Cherries in January and extended his contract at the club in the summer, signing a new deal that will see him under contract at the Vitality Stadium until the summer of 2029.

The report states how Bournemouth would not be looking to entertain offers below £50m, with the Ukraine international having played every minute under Andoni Iraola in the Premier League this season.

Having helped them to home wins over Arsenal and Manchester City, Spurs would be the most likely destination given their preference for a ball-playing centre-back who can quickly step in given Van de Ven's latest setback.

"I'm really enjoying it. It's a beautiful town and a really exciting project," Zabarnyi told the club's official website in the summer. "I've enjoyed a lot of good moments, last season was important for me.

"We achieved a record points total but we can do more, it's a really great place to be and I'm pleased to extend my stay."

In FourFourTwo's view, Bournemouth are unlikely to part with Zabaryni unless they have a tailor-made replacement ready and waiting to join them in January, which seems unlikely. We expect him to remain with the Cherries.

Inappropriate comments lead to lengthy ban for Tottenham star who will miss crucial games

Description

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has dealt with his fair share of headaches so far this season, from inconsistent performances to constant injury woes.

Spurs currently sit tenth in the Premier League table despite comprehensive wins over Manchester United and Aston Villa and scoring more goals than any other side in the league so far.

However, Sunday's 2-1 defeat to Ipswich underlined some key issues facing the North London outfit which have only been amplified by headache selections plaguing the side.

Tottenham star set to miss crucial games

The Lilywhites have already had to deal with issues to key players such as Dominic Solanke, Micky van de Ven and Heung-Min Son all facing respective issues at different points of the campaign so far.

Despite the injuries, Spurs have managed to field a fairly consistent midfield, with Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski's consistent performances and availability pivotal to any good moments the side has enjoyed so far.

However, this midfield has been hit by a major blow as Bentancur has been hit with a massive seven-game ban from the FA for racially motivated comments made over the summer in reference towards teammate Heung-Min Son.

The 27-year-old midfielder was charged with an “aggravated breach” of FA rules in September after a video emerged from Uruguayan television in which Bentancur suggested that Son "looks the same" as his Asian compatriots.

The Uruguayan replied: “Sonny’s or a cousin of Sonny’s? They all look the same, more or less.” when asked to provide a shirt from Spurs' famous number seven, sparking an investigation by the FA.

The FA have since handed the 27-year-old a ban of at least six games, charging Bentancur with using abusive language and acting in a manner which brought the game into disrepute.

The club are believed to have questioned the FA’s ability to charge Bentancur as the comments were made on international duty, while the player himself apologised to Son privately shortly after the interview was broadcast, as well as issuing a public apology on social media.
