Unfortunately for Ange Postecoglou, his Tottenham Hotspur side have had to face Liverpool four times this season.

Tottenham beat Liverpool in one of those four matches — the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, but otherwise it’s been three wins for Arne Slot’s side.

In those trio of victories, Liverpool have netted 15 goals in total, a number which is as impressive for Slot’s side as it is worrying for Spurs.

In truth, Spurs have been hopeless in the Premier League this season and that partly explains why Tottenham plan to sack Postecoglou in the summer.

But from Liverpool’s point of view, they are only just getting started under Slot, a Dutchman who immediately endeared himself to the Anfield faithful.

That being said, Postecoglou actually praised Liverpool immediately after full-time on Sunday when speaking to Sky Sports.

The Tottenham manager said that Liverpool were ‘worthy champions’, admitting that it was almost impossible for his Spurs side to compete once Slot’s team went ahead in front of their home fans.

Postecoglou said: “Credit to Liverpool. They’re worthy champions – they’ve been outstanding all year. It was really hard for us. They proved to be too good.

“We were going to face a highly motivated team and so it proved. We started the game okay and tried to make it as hard as possible.

“We’re making a lot of changes to our team on a weekly basis. It’s affecting our fluency and consistency, and we’re paying the price for that.

“In the first half, what was really disappointing was the manner in which we conceded the goals. I thought we were actually well in the game and had our moments going forward.

“Once they went in front it was really difficult, with the crowd behind them, to get back into the game.

“In the games we’ve been blown away by Liverpool, we’ve been fairly depleted. We’ve obviously rested a few, which I think we needed.

“The lads who played have come through okay, which is what we needed.”

Liverpool wanted Postecoglou before Slot

Of course, it’s interesting to think that Postecoglou was linked with the Liverpool job when Jurgen Klopp announced that he would step down almost a year ago.

At the time, the former Celtic manager was enjoying a much better time in N17 — his stock was pretty high after a seriously impressive start to the 2023/24 season.

However, Liverpool fans will probably be quite content that FSG ultimately opted for Slot, whether or not they seriously considered Postecoglou..

In terms of Sunday’s match itself, Jamie Redknapp was blown away by one Liverpool player in the home side’s 5-1 win.

A remarkable achievement for Slot’s side in their first season, who looked poised to attack the summer transfer market.
